So one of my characters grew up in something pretty close to a Free-Love Future and happens to be one of the most sexually active people in the cast. It's heavily implied that, because of this and widespread birth control, there is much less if a taboo for women to have casual sex or multiple partners, so he comes pretty close to being The Casanova of the cast as he can easily find people who are unashamed about enjoying sex, plus he's a pretty charming (and attractive) guy. A minor part of his backstory features a situation where he was temporarily transformed into a female body, (which is actually not very unusual in this setting) which put him into a Different for Girls situation (not that he had particuarly unenlightened ideas before it happened, it's more of a 'just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.' kind of thing that stuck with him) and I want to make sure his behavior reflects that.

I'll come back to this, but I need some time to think.

Well, what exactly is his story and motivation?

There are lots of ways to write a Chivalrous Pervert, but chivalry implies that there is a virtue to fight for. For example, in the erotic fiction series I publish on the web, my protagonist's main motivation is "sexual freedom". He doesn't believe that anyone should be shamed, ridiculed, marginalized, held back, or reprimanded in any way for exploring anything and everything that turns them on (so long as it's Safe, Sane, and Consensual).

The plot itself deals with how people can and will fight against this ideology, in every aspect of life such as the entertainment industry, pornography, education, politics, news media, and even organized crime. Every single one of them is built upon one (or more) misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, misandrist, racist, or xenophobic notions that exist solely to decide who can have sex, with whom, and how.

There's one scene that emphasizes this. At one point in the story, the protagonists acquires a harem of "collared" submissives whom he treats as spouses in a polyamorous relationship. One day, a woman comes to him and begs him to collar her, because she has nowhere else to go.

He sadly tells her no, and says this in response:

"Because, Hasana, as far as I'm concerned, you're still a slave.

Hasana, the number one thing I believe in in this world is sexual freedom. I will never collar someone who feels forced to be with me or who feels that they have nowhere else to go. Every single person I have collared always had many other options before they came to me, and they will always have options should they choose to leave.

"Sex and power alone mean nothing to me—what's sexy to me is choice.

"Any woman who is mine has become so because I am her best choice out of many. Imagine if you were in a beauty contest, Hasana. Would it mean anything to you if you were the only woman competing? Would you feel like you had accomplished anything at all if the judges had no one to pick but you?

"Then you understand my position. I cannot collar you, because doing so would be doing both of us a disservice. It would rob you of the freedom of choice. And it would rob me of any true meaning to my conquest."

However, he does help her find a place to live, acquire her citizenship, get an education, and attend rape crisis counseling. Later in the story, when she asks him to collar her again, he accepts without hesitation.

His main motivation in his situation is "Hm, I like sex and I don't think there's anything wrong with it, so I'm going to do it. But I'm going to be kind and respectful towards my female (he's straight) partners because I know that being a woman can be difficult and also as a human being, it's the right thing to do..."

Then what else do you need? Let him have a lot of sex, and be a kind and nice person.

Unless his sex drive is the primary focus of his characterization, that should do it. Avoid Unfortunate Implications, and you should be fine.

One trick you could do is to feature and contrast him against other, even sleazier, perverts with morals even lower than his and who cross lines he wouldn't cross. That way, the character comes off looking better by comparison. It's all about contrast.

Another thing you have to make sure of is that his actions come off as (mostly) harmless and are for comic effect.

Having lots of sex doesn't make someone a pervert, unless you're trapped in some kind of 1950s time-warp.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

[up][up]. No, that would just make him a pervert. Other people being worse than you doesn't make you chivalrous.

No. However, having standards does. And one efficient way to highlight those standards is to contrast him against someone who doesn't have those standards.

Having standards doesn't make you chivalrous. For example, being a rapist who prefers roofies to violence doesn't make you a chivalrous rapist.

Well the main points of his 'promuscuity' are:

  • He has stadards, he isn't to the point where he will shag Anything That Moves.
  • He is respectful to the women he sleeps with and ensures that they know that it is 'casual' sex and he doesn't plan creating any long term relationship (He occasionally does form relatioships from it, but it's mostly to avoid 'loving and leaving,' because he'd feel guilty about doig that)
  • Even though he explicitly states he has a great 'admiration' for the female body, (he also happens to be a artist, so it isn't ENTIRELY sexual) he understands that women are capable of providing companionship outside of sex and has a couple (platonic) good female friends.

Then seriously, it sounds like you have everything you need.

This guy basically sounds like me.

Ha, smile good to know he'll be relatable (at least in that respect)

Unfortunately it's still in pretty early development, (the story itself also deals with some LGBT themes) but, hey, if it actually gets published; I will definitely point you to it's direction :)

What you have sounds good, but then again saying you want to write something and actually how it turns out in practice are usually two totally different things. I'd recommend writing the thing and then getting a few beta readers to look for that particular trait.

I was planning on doing that, I just wanted to ensure I had good traits in mind before I started writing.
