The trope (often but not always in video games) is: at 100 hit points you're fine, at 50 hit points you're fine, at 1 hit point you're fine, and at 0 hit points you are suddenly dead. Some games avert this because being damaged has other effects, frequently slowed movement.

I don't see that in the image. I kinda get it, but you have to understand the trope already to understand the picture.

Thanks to this topic, I now notice that MANY examples mention limit breaks... and only very few mention the trope itself. anyway, 2 screencaps of Megaman Legends... I found these and the last one could work but i can't find one where he actually has his lifebar red, gets himself hit by Collision Damage and dies or something like that.

now that i think of it, A Kingdom Hearts pic could work too... *finds a vid to screencap*

bam

Maybe just his lifebar would work? He does change expression if damaged/dead.

[up] Kind of hard to tell what's going on in any of those pics. I think the OP is the best. This trope is not limited to video games, and it is in the examples.

[up] The OP doesn't really show the "death by Collision Damage" part of the trope. it's just a "before and after" as someone mentioned.
though i agree, my example is hard to decipher, but that's the easiest caps i can get.

^^ It is an example but it is not illustrative (unless you already know what it is trying to say).

Panel #3 doesn't look dead enough. Besides, IIRC it's not a straight example, as in D&D somebody between 0 and -9 is functionally incapacitated.

The fact that they wouldn't know it makes the picture even worse, doesn't it? Since the character dies at -10 instead of 0, which doesn't make much sense if you don't know the D&D context.

Incidentally, I'd call D&D an example anyway since you fight at full strength until 0 HP, after which you're instantly helpless and at the mercy of your enemies (or rescued by your allies). The difference between "defeat" and "death" mostly exists for roleplaying reasons.

D&D in the edition depicted is not an example, no (although in the current edition it would be). Either way, the image doesn't illustrate the trope. You can't tell from it that the character is fully functional in the first panel (and by the rules used in that comic, he's not).

...I'm kinda new to rpgs, but I know Half-Orks in Pathfinder and barbarians can both keep fighting for at least a round after getting put under 0.

I like the picture because it shows a single point being the difference between life and death. Doesn't matter if it's exactly zero, it's the single point between life and death that matters.

[up] But the trope isn't "a single point between life and death", the trope is "a single point between being absolutely fine and 100% capable of evertyhing, and completely totally dead". That isn't shown (nor does it apply in third edition D&D, because you have ten points of unconsciousness in between).

@Willbyr: The problem there is that it doesn't show the "is perfectly fine until HP hits Zero" aspect of the trope; in the first panel he's obviously bleeding and talking about how it sucks. There's no indication that he's still active.

main 1st panel is guy posing with his motorcycle(surely you can see some bolts of electricity? that means something), sub panels are him whacking it around things, causing the bike to explode. can be read in any order save for the main 1st panel which is the effect of the whacking around. next panel is the motorcycle finally exploding.

I went with the Goblins pic because, so far, none of the video game suggestions have been clear enough...I know mine has problems but unless someone's got an out-of-the-park game example, it may be as good as we can do.

I'm of the philosophy that a bad image is worse than no image at all. And I think the Goblin one is a bad image (misleading, etc). So I'm voting for leaving this alone until a better image comes up (if one exists).

You'd think OOTS would have an example (or at least a reference) to this somewhere, but I don't spot it cited in its trope list.

An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.
