My Camp Na No Wri Mo novel "Nature Abhors A (Good) Witch" (Which I may or may not rename "Rationality: The Wicked Choice") is about what happens when sensible, rational people end up in a setting like Chick Tracts or those Christsploitation films. Basicly, what I got is some Wrong Genre Savvy (they start out thinking they are in one of those "the game is the key to you saving the world" stories), snarky comments, and a Rage against the heavens. But I don't think I could write much of a story based on that. Do you have any other ideas?

May I suggest that they meet- for lack of a better phrase- "Dark World" equivalents of themselves?

Like, for instance, if a character is in a fan of metal or some other genre of music not usually associated with Christianity, then his/her counterpart would be a paranoid wreck who believes New Media is Literally Evil and is All Satanic Propaganda, or something akin to that.

[up] That doesn't deconstruct the trope, actually.

…It's understandable why you find your concept hard to write a story on, it's not even a concept.
Check this out. It helped me polish my own "concept"note
Anyway, find a typical example of Everyone Is Satan in Hell. and then have it screw up people's lives,HARD. like for example:

  • story about a satanist band and a local church
  • establish that some hollywood satanist band actually do charity
and things like that when they aren't in their satanist persona.
stupid, but this is just an example anyway.
  • church demonizes them.
  • their fans retaliate against the church.
  • the band makes their fans attack more, because they're supposed to be evil,
but behind the scenes outside their persona, they do their best to stop their fans
  • have some of them die/get injured for some reason because of some church fanatic.
  • the story gets covered in the media, the attackers were heroes, the band were evil.
  • further shitstorm caused by the band fans.
  • etc etc.

basically, just play it Damn Straight and don't attempt to whitewash it. there are REAL consequences to the actions of both sides.

I came up with my example while i was about to look up some examples, not saying it's easy, it's just you have to forget that deconstruction is a technique, and just think that "I have to play this as straight as possible and have logical and terrible consequences on the characters actions."

I swear it's very much like Centipede's Dilemma, think about how you do something, you can't do it; just do it without thinking, things go smoothly.
