What's wrong with teaching evolution, they spent so long in Grade 11 trying to teach it to us but you definitely can't accuse Pokemon of doing that. But yeah I know Creationist. Sorry I'm from your generation (only 2 years older than you) so I can't help.

Punk Rock.
I'm 21. The "video games are evil" thing is still pretty current. It's silly because once you become a part of gamer culture, you see how utterly harmless it is; the only people who think games are dangerous are from the older generation, who never played them. Politicians in their 50s, etc. Violent film was what was talked about in their day, so a game that allows you to vicariously commit these violent acts must seem horrifying to them.
I missed the "rock/metal is the devil's music" stuff of a few decades earlier, though there'd probably be a second wave of that if people knew of all the obscure/underground metal bands that really DO sing about the devil or the Nazis or killing prostitutes.
And I don't know about the theory of evolution, but I know there was some flap a while back about bible-thumpers trying to get the creation story taught in science classes by calling it "intelligent design". The whole intelligent design fiasco was just embarrassing. Now nobody can discuss the idea of an intelligent force being behind the creation of the universe without being accused of being a bible-thumper and an evolution denier.

You need an adult./Was Fundamentalist Pentecostal Living In the Deep South
What WASN'T is the real question.
This is my day.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Well I went to Christian school and I have a Seventh Day Adventist family, so I knew people that weren't allowed to watch Harry Potter because it was witchcraft. Also I heard of people who couldn't play Pokemon because it promoted evolution. Surprisingly, rap was not demonized by people I knew, I distinctly remember singing along to "Get Low" by Lil Jon when I was like 9.
Man, so the "Harry Potter is witchcraft" thing actually happened?
It's funny to me because I went to a Christian school, but it was a fairly laid back one. The priest we had at the school church actually praised Harry Potter for being a positive tale, a wealth of good role models for kids, etc.
You need an adult.Nobody I knew banned Harry Potter. Though they did ban The Golden Compass series, in my Catholic school (not when I was in it though) which was awkward since the Grade 6/7 teacher was reading it to the class.
I went to Catholic school. Fortunately, they were not morons.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I knew people who refused to read it because it was "The Devil".
Pfft. People must have a pretty low opinion of the devil if they think he hangs out in children's books.
You need an adult.Well to be fair it was mostly the Seventh Day Adventist people I knew that banned it. My Christian school was kinda okay with it, they were just glad we were reading above the level of "Cat in the Hat". But we were banned from dressing as witches or ghosts on Halloween because it's the Devil's holiday.
My grandmother refused to step foot in Bowling Alleys because she thought it was wildly inappropriate.
/tangent
The Golden Compass was taken off the shelves at my High School's library after a few parents complained.
I found The Golden Compass to be mediocre at best, and the latter books have the subtlety of a rocket-powered sledgehammer in their anti-Christian message. But if someone wants to read them, all the better for them.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I didn't care for them that much either, but it still surprised me when they were taken off.
Well, not surprise, exactly.

Well, if I were a mum, and there's a possibility I might be in the future, I would definitely prefer that my kids read Harry Potter, the Golden Compass, Lord of the Rings, etc. than, say, Twilight.
Parents should educate themselves about the media that their kids consume. Has anyone else heard of the Tyler the Creator controversy? I found it deeply saddening. Music cannot make a criminal, but it can't exactly be helping young men's opinions of women if they are being encouraged to chant along to anthems of "rape the bitch, kill the bitch", etc.

You need an adult.Fuck that guy.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Yeah. That was the only thing I could think about it, in the end. Just fuck him. I read an article in The Guardian about his record label and the gist of it was "Tyler the Creator is an intelligent musician with a great future, too bad about the rape fantasies though. Let's hope he grows out of that." I just thought, seriously? The guy is an incredible douchebag—you need only read about his and his fans' incredibly violent response to that female blogger to know that. The amount of apologism in that article, from both the author and the people who commented on it, was astounding. "Rappers don't rap about themselves, they rap about a character they create." "He can't be a misogynist, he was raised by a single mum." "The record label is owned by a gay woman!" As if that means he couldn't possibility be a misogynist... I'm thinking these people need to educate themselves about misogynistic psychology and the kinds of people who commit crimes against women. Isn't it true that a lot of rapists and sexual predators grew up in very female-centric and female-dominant households? Doesn't like every serial killer ever have some kind of Oedipus complex?
You need an adult.I'd say Chris Rock agrees with you.

But that's a story for another time.In my experience, it's been pretty much what has been brought up in this thread. It's kinda sad that even to this day, people demonize video games for being desensitizing and a gateway drug to committing real world violence, either that, or generally kiddy-fare coupled with a waste of time. And yes, I'm definitely too young to remember when Heavy Metal and Dungeons & Dragons were demonized as being the instruments of Satan, although in reality both of them cover fantasy (particularly the kind of metal I listen to, like say Black Sabbath or Angel Witch; hell, Led Zeppelin, though regarded as pioneering the genre and not really being metal, has quite a bit of fantastic material) and in the case of D&D (of the games I attended IRL), it's a nice, escapist social activity. Moral panics keep going on, and unfortunately they'll continue, because as a whole, people either don't know their history or 'conveniently' forget it.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.I'm kinda still growing up, so I'd have to say video games.
And Dubstep.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."Dubstep is demonized?
You need an adult.Well, the Holy Church of Wanting to Goddamn Sleep has it singled out for Antichrist.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.That part was a joke about how much people hate it.
But anyway, seeing as the whole Jack Thompson stuff was going on when I was younger, I'd say video games were demonized pretty hard.
