Lots of genre-common elements besides just left-to-right platform running and jumping, which is also there. Seems good to me.

I think the issue is that it's difficult to see the platforms because of the background. Perhaps an image from an earlier game which has less background and shows the platforms better would be a good image?

It's a little light on the platform aspect (I was thinking one of the up-in-the-sky areas with the flying Koopas where the entire level is really nothing but platforms) but it works well enough.
Personally, I'd rather have a shot of the NES version, but it's still pretty good.

Unless it's a Trope Maker or something like that, I don't generally think the word iconic has much of a place in Image Pickin. A few good images for a collage, not iconic ones.
Check out my fanfiction!VideoGame.Super Mario Bros 1 is a Trope Codifier for Platform Game, though. And either way it should probably stand alone. I think a single image is better than a collage, maybe something like: [1]

Gave the collage idea a try, but I think a the screenshot of SMB(centre in 17.2) might work just as well.
