I was watching Masako X's What-if series and went on a writing binge, fleshing out different What-If's that I could possibly use in a DBM-style fanfic. These are the rough outlines I was working on. Someone be my revision b'tch for me Have fun picking out any continuity/grammatical errors you can find.

EDIT: And wow. You ever go to show something and realize just how many more errors were in that thing and wish you hadn't shown it. Misplaced names, incomplete sentences, and at least a few phrases that probably won't make sense. Que sera.

I got about as far as the "Trunks Saga" with the first one - though I was kind of proud of how I got the humans through Namek with a little more gumption and luck. I was worried about boosting the humans too much. As some might guess, I took this from DBM, because I was fascinated by the idea of the humans getting through their adventures without Goku or Gohan or any Saiyans on their side. At the same time, while Krillin was the "hero," he wasn't an Implacable Man with Training from Hell. The UDW being used against Vegeta was probably my favorite part to write.

Not too sure about Nappa eating a Destructo Disk - that part of the outline had me in a corner with "how does Krillin actually beat him without King Kai's training just making him as strong as Goku?" Well, Vegeta warned Nappa to get out of the way. They're in a different location here and Krillin's reflexes are faster thanks to King Kai, so maybe Nappa doesn't get out of the way in time.

The cut-off there at the end, with Yamcha, is from DBM's version. I didn't make it too clear in the outline, but the idea is that since Goku isn't around, Bulma has a rough go of it finding the balls. The pterodactyl, the bear thief, and finally Oolong convince her to just quit. She never encounters Yamcha until Yamcha, worried about King Piccolo, tries to steal from her family's company so that he can hide out in the desert - this kicks off a relationship between them once Bulma catches him and Yamcha, with his chick Kryptonite, basically bends to her whims. But... this does represent a problem.

In DBM it wasn't explained how Yamcha became an Android. I was going for, "he never gives up being a bandit and stays a recluse, and eventually Gero finds him and takes him instead of Lapis and Lazuli." I think this can still work, but I need to include that in the notes. Maybe Gero just focuses on finding criminals who nobody will miss to use as his subjects. So the nail here is that without actively joining Goku and Bulma's adventures, Yamcha is lured by Gero and becomes an Android. He'll be of great help as his personality is more noble than 17's, and Launch, as 18, is only a problem when she's Bad Launch. This will affect the team dynamic going into the Android/Trunks saga.

I like this idea, and it better explains why Launch is there, since she's never found by Goku and Krillin, lacking a Nimbus, isn't able to find her in the exact same spot that he and Goku did in canon.

Which is another thing - I wanted to play around and have him being Panty to Master Roshi instead, though I'm not too sure what Panty was doing at this point in time, if she was with Jaco or not. Still, I just needed some random, attractive teenager for Krillin to bring back so that Roshi would give him training. I think without the Nimbus, it would have taken him longer to cross the ocean and he could have found virtually anyone.

Going into the Android/Trunks saga, things will be different because Trunks isn't Vegeta's son - Vegeta's dead and that's another thing I want to talk about. Killing Vegeta for good... I rather like the idea that he gets screwed by Ginyu and dies on Namek. A) because it'd be hard to write the humans as effective heroes when Vegeta is the powerhouse he is, and B) it's just karmic. So without Vegeta, Trunks is still born (not sure who the dad is just yet) and his prophecy is a little different. Roshi, Krillin, and Chi-Chi foguht the Red Ribbon Army instead of Goku, so Gero's grudge is different, and he mostly blames Roshi.

With Krillin being a student of Roshi, he's none too pleased with 16 targeting Roshi, but Krillin is away studying with King Kai right now - how exactly Kami is able to get him there, I'm still thinking about.

Trunks' prophecy is a bit different - I haven't written it out yet, but I'm thinking that with Freeza a year away, and Gero studying the battles with Vegeta and presumably Freeza, he still overcompensates and makes 16, 17, and 18 ludicrously strong. In Trunks' timeline 17 and 18 have their memories wiped by Gero because he gets more time to work on and brainwash them. The Z-Warriors are killed and Bulma and Trunks survive and use the time machine. In this timeline, Future Bulma, being more paranoid due to her experiences, already knows the androids are mechanical in nature (she knew to refer to them as androids in canon), so maybe she studies their design more, maybe one of the survivors overhears the Androids blathering about their design by Dr. Gero.

Or, maybe, with Gero having time to complete them, he leads them into battle and tries to take over the world. Maybe Future Trunks comes from a wholly different future where Gero and his machines take over the world, and Bulma and somebody else - Future Mai maybe - manage to break into his lab and steal the blueprints.

So Trunks comes back with the blueprints that guide Bulma to Gero's lab, leading her to find Yamcha and Launch and awaken them, and 16, before any of this comes to pass. Maybe. My endgame here is that Bulma gets a little more invested in android technology and, studying Yamcha and Launch, begins to work on ways to improve the human fighters as cyborgs. Not quite sure if this is the right route to get there though. Now I'm getting ahead of myself.

...so anyway. Yamcha disappears in the five years between the "King Piccolo" fight and "Raditz appearing on Earth." Bulma assumes he's cheating on her. (He was, maybe with Bad Launch since birds of a feather flock together - Yamcha never really "improved his character or became interested in the martial arts since he never encountered Goku or even Krillin - but Gero got to them)

The second one was from a fic called Bringer of Death as well as one of Masako's what-ifs. I liked Bringer of Death but it got way focused on analyzing everyone's power levels and making Vegeta a "good person," but I always felt like it made his defrosting personality a little too stilted and less prideful, and it made him "win too much." Plus it included stuff from the movies, complicating the narrative. I wanted to focus solely on what Vegeta would do through the anime/manga's context.

I really like the idea of him taking over some portion of Freeza's empire, and I wanted to mix that with what we learned about the Freeza Force from ROF. Vegeta creating his own "replacement Ginyu Squad" was an idea I could get behind and I wanted to find some minor Freeza soldiers to fit in that squad, but I got mugged in the Stations Of Canon when I realized Freeza had to come back to Earth, and I figured Sorbet would probably turn on Vegeta if Freeza ever came back.

I debated whether there'd be some epic battle between Cold and Vegeta and Goku, but figured that it was more important to get to the Trunks part of the story. I figured this part would mostly stay the same - without Trunks showing up, the Androids show, Vegeta sticks around on Earth or at least fathers Trunks and leaves, Trunks goes back.

Story doesn't change too much until the ROSAT - another thing I was glad to alter. It felt like the ultimate dick move and perfectly in-character for a Vegeta who got to be top dog and wants to stay top dog. It screws over Goku and Gohan... and basically everybody else. But this changes the flow of events so that while Vegeta gets trounced taking Cell on first, Goku doesn't let Cell heal up, and Vegeta, with another power boost, has just enough to destroy Cell. Admittedly this was kind of a scapegoat - nobody could beat Cell at that point in a fair contest because of Vegeta's actions. That said, I enjoy Vegeta shooting himself in the foot in a slightly different way here. And Perfect Cell being too cocky and letting Vegeta hit him with a Final Flash - when Cell is tired and Vegeta has just been replenished and powered up - felt rather poetic.

I'm not absolutely sure if the power level math works out in any of these, but alas, I wanted Super Kaioken in there, but to rein it in so it ends up being a "Kaio-WHAT?" before it just sabotages Goku's effort. But thanks to Senzu Beans and common sense, Cell lets his own arrogance get the better of him and Vegeta - much stronger and pissed off - saves the day. If I can accept Vegeta tanking hits from the likes of Buu and Beerus, I'll Hand Wave him taking out Cell with a Final Flash.

7 years pass and Goku and Vegeta are chilling on Earth. Wasn't too sure where to go from here - do they fight in any more tournaments, or do they just respect each others' space? Vegeta settles down definitely. Goten is born and spends time training with Goku. I was thinking maybe explore the heart virus some and maybe have Vegeta and others contract it - we never know how widespread the disease was.

And plot hole right away: the reason Supreme Kai takes Goku back/Goku offers to show him the Dragon Balls is because Supreme Kai wants to use the balls to discover Babidi's location. So my thinking here is that he does find out, but Babidi outmaneuvers him, or he asks for Babidi's location, but Shenron, and by extension Kami, doesn't know, so it fails. Still, seeing a powerful fighter like Goku inspires him to take a little insurance just in case Babidi shows up on Earth. And due to being there at the right time, Kibito interrupts the fight with the Saiyans, and things spiral from there.

This one got away from me a bit and it's shorter, but I found the divergences later on more interesting. It leaves off with Goku in a moral dilemma after fighting the Ginyu Force on Earth. I'm already sort of questioning whether Goku would be able to stand up to Ginyu without gravity training, but assuming he was, it'd probably only be thanks to the Kaioken. Even so, I doubt he'd last long, so I had Goku do something a little out of character and use his head. I think, if the Ginyus attacking his homestead and he saw Chi-Chi and Gohan in trouble, he'd do anything to win. Thus, Goku deceives Ginyu and Kaioken-sucker punches him. However, Vegeta isn't around to kll off the Ginyus, so what to do with them. My thinking is - Piccolo does the deed. But Goku wouldn't like that, so maybe Piccolo knows about the ROSAT and decides to trap them in there while they're unconscious with enough food and water to last a year or so.

Vegeta. Another case where I wrote him out of the story, but I like this one. Rather than some epic battle, Vegeta faces Goku early on, and due to the Supreme Kai being there, he doesn't get to try and destroy the Earth. Kibito knocks his b'tch-ass out and teleports him to a far-off world where Vegeta pretty much can't escape. Later, Goku does ask Kibito if he can go to where Vegeta is, and I'm debating whether Vegeta is just camping out on this alien planet and tries to fight Goku right then and there, or if he's gone Great Ape and lost his mind in a Planet Hulk kind of way. Either way, no Namek for Goku.

Because Namek is dust. Freeza went there, killed everyone, couldn't get his wish and blew it the frack up. But knowing that Vegeta never reported in, it takes him about 2 years to send the Ginyu Force after Vegeta's last known location and to hear back. Vegeta was kidnapped as far as he knows. The Ginyus come to Earth and they're not blowing stuff up - they want to sell the planet after all - which drives them into conflict with Goku. But seeing that Goku is so strong, Ginyu actually wants to recruit him initially. I found this idea kind of funny. Which leads us back to the first paragraph of this rant: Goku beats the Ginyus with Piccolo's help.

What to do, where to go from there. Ginyus in the ROSAT, or Piccolo axing them, or maybe they all just die from a Kaio-ken attack.

Either way it's leading to Goku dying from the heart virus.

There is a One Punch Man/Dragonball crossover that could do with some revision, but nevertheless everyone should read.

It takes place after Saitama 86'd Lord Boros. Freeza catches wind of this because Boros was one of the biggest threats to the Freeza Force, so he sends Vegeta and Nappa to Earth to deal with Boros' killer.

Meanwhile, Saitama and Genos do some grocery shopping when Saitama suddenly gets a very bad feeling.

I'll become an Elite Hero! The young Saiyan and the fruit!

Well... I am writing a Dragon Ball Super fanfic about the U6 Saiyans. Is basically an origin episode for Cabba and Caulifla, while also retelling the Tree of Might from their perspective. It follows a young Cabba who wants to be an elite hero just like Frost (While also being his biggest fanboy), while also wanting to prove his worth to Caulifla who wants her to call him by his name.

... Wow, now that I think about it, that sounds pretty similar to Boku No Hero Academia... oops?

Bump.

What would Sonic and his friends think of Frieza? From his actions, to his personality, to his fighting style.

Just brainstorming ideas for fanfiction I may write someday.

[up]they probably gonna be pretty disgusted with him as a person, they probably be also disgusted with his actions.

Don't know about the fighting style though, doesn't seem like something they may focus

Let's say Frieza's fighting style revolves around causing his opponent as much pain as possible. Just ask Vegeta.

Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no competition. Eggman’s a way, way, way, way better scientist. Hell, I’m not sure Freeza even qualifies as a scientist.

...Oh, you mean who’s the better villain. Well, one of them has an intergalactic empire and destroys entire planets. The other keeps failing to take over the same planet (although he’s come really, really close more than once).

Edit: They might not initially know that, though.

Speaking of what-ifs, has anyone ever done a "what if the Saiyans existed in the Marvel or DC universe" story? I could see at least in the latter Goku crash-landing in the same place Superman did and when the Kents find the pod they also find the spirit of Sun Wukong sitting on top of it, and he tells them that the kid is gonna be his successor before disappearing without elaboration.

Also, how is there not a Campaign Comic for Dragon Ball?

Seriously, I can see whoever is playing Goku is being either an actual idiot or committed to the Idiot Hero role, whoever plays Vegeta is the min-maxer who does Vegeta's dumb shit to try and get more stats and XP, the one who plays Gohan (and probably other characters like Tien) being a hardcore roleplayer who is more interested in proper fleshed out character arcs than their characters being active or relevant, etc. At least we know how it ends, so whoever makes it can plan ahead.

So a thought just occurred to me.

There are still two completely unexplored eras of Dragonball:

  • The time before Piccolo started rampaging across the land. I once brought up in the main thread how there seem to be only two martial arts masters who teach Ki techniques in the entire story: the Turtle hermit, the crane hermit. I'm not sure where Korrin's training falls there. I theorized that King Piccolo's initial ass kicking of the entire human race had something to do with that, as there may have been far more dudes who could teach those techniques, but they were wiped out and lost to history (the fact that Roshi just sticks to himself and both he and the Crane Hermit don't seem to take on many students doesn't help).

I'd love to see stories about that era, since it's painfully clear Toriyama will never bother to look at what things were like before then (he's always moving forward, and in a Saiyan centric direction). I think we could get a really good story out of that time.

  • A young Gohan Sr. and his adventures before he met Goku. It's interesting that Gohan, the Ox King, and Roshi all had one Dragonball in their possession don't you think? While it's never stated in series, is there a possibility that they knew the legend (a lot of people did), tried to collect the balls, but only got those three and failed. Many it was a training mission Roshi sent them on. That's just one idea: What about Ox King's wife? We know nothing about her, so maybe such a story could have him meeting her.

They could have run ins with an early version of the Red Ribbon Army (depending on how far back it takes place) or there could be a huge rivalry with the Crane school, and a lot of other interesting ideas.

As always, the ideas aren't perfect, but I think there's something there to consider.

While I've thought about the first, and would be interested in the second, at this point, with Goku and co facing super-powerful gods, it seems bizarre to go back to the good old days when a dog was king and the most powerful man in the world was Roshi and Mercenary Tao.
