These are good options - assuming the crowner works.

The crowners are now fixed, and will work in threads, as of last week. There's an in-thread crowner being used in "Real Life section maintenance" in the Long Term Projects forum, f'rex.

The current definition as it stands is one that was changed in a TRS. The earliest definition I see is one that just says "I recognize this actor from something". Here is the TRS, which I can't find by searching. So, hence the misuse. It did originally mean "anyone", and I don't think it went through a rigorous clean-up, and when you have only slight definition changes and lots of misuse with not a lot of clean-up...well, the old definition sticks.

I've never liked this trope. It's like a really crappy version of IM Db. But it does have an incredible amount of wicks and inbounds, and luckily it is relegated to the Trivia page where basically no one needs to look at it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with HITG as it is except that it's mixed in with actual Trivia entries.

Might be a little early for a crowner. Plus, it's glitching due to the server changeover.

I think the definition should be changed to match the misuse and call it a day. It's already out of the way on trivia, and people like it (even though it's basically a tweaked version of IMDB), and it's not hurting anything. It would be way more trouble than it's worth to change it to the definition on the page, especially since that definition is subjective.

How can a definition be subjective? It can be subjective whether a work qualifies under a given definition, but the definition itself can't vary from person to person.

And trivia can never be subjective.

Sorry: The definition isn't subjective, the trope it is describing ("You recognize some minor actor from another minor role") is.

We had an old crowner on this topic that settled on the current definition. Clearly it didn't work all that well. I'm going to see if there's any more commentary before hooking the new one.

I agree with Fighteer upthread. Kill It with Fire. The statement that it basically functions as a very bad IM Db was also spot-on.

One thing that I don't understand is that while Hey Its That Guy has been designated Trivia, it does not come up with a red dot when you go to edit a page. In other words, if you do not know that Hey Its That Guy should not be on a work's main trope page, no warning comes up to tell you to move it when you hit the "edit" button.

The red dot is for YMMV, bot Trivia.

I downvoted the new function proposal, by the way, as a) it requires a huge effort to implement and b) I am starting to doubt the usefulness.

I really don't see the point of "Convert to a thread." What's that going to accomplish?

It retains the inbounds and allows people who like using it as a conversation game to go on using it as a conversation game.

I've often felt the way Fighteer does about Hey Its That Guy and the very similar Hey Its That Voice. These non-tropes not only are an excuse for Fan Myopia (as if all tropers watched the same shows just because they featured the same actors), but probably do more to promote sinkholing than any other pages on this wiki.

I don't even care how established the misuse has become. At the very least, I want most of those several thousand wicks purged. Let's just have respectable creator pages instead of this nonsense from now on.

The threaded discussion idea is currently at +9 (5.50:1), and leading by far. I think we could use a few more votes here before calling this.

The crowner says that I already voted for several issues on the crowner, but trying to remove the votes does nothing, or says that I already downvoted on the item. I'm trying to support the "Keep the pages, remove them from Trivia" option but I can't get it to be the only thing to support.

You can't "remove" a vote.

The crowner is glitching for me too. It says I upvoted things I didn't, and won't let me change it.

And personally, I'd like a lot more votes for this. We're talking about almost 5000 wicks (double that if we apply this to Hey Its That Voice), we need more than twenty or so people weighing in.

Maybe I'm just not remembering, but I don't recall voting on this crowner at all, but there are votes right there...

I could very well be mistaken, though.

I did vote on everything and it logged correctly. You may try changing the votes to the desired vote.

Role Association sounds like someone's previous role influencing the view on the later role rather than just identifying a person. Listing every previous role a live action actor had sounds like People Sit on Chairs.

So, I forgot to ask this earlier: Does this apply to Hey Its That Voice as well? Because that's used in exactly the same way, but the crowner doesn't reflect that, unless you're taking "all associated wicks" to mean HITV.

PageAction: HeyItsThatGuy2

Crown Description:

Hey Its That Guy is a Trivia item defined as "An actor you've seen in other works, but you don't remember his name, just his face." We often misuse it for "Here are unrelated other roles played by this film's actors," the just-for-fun game currently covered by Role Association.

All crowner items will apply to the mirror trope, Hey Its That Voice, as well.

Usage stats between both tropes: 9,448 wicks and 2,657 inbounds.
