Ambiguous Name: Dead Herring

Then I'm all in favour of cutting it. A future trope with the same name can still be YKTTW'd, but at this time I don't think there's any extant pages that it ought to actually be redirected to.

The only reason to make it a redirect at all is to avoid breaking the inbound links pointing to it. Which is the safer assumption: that someone who linked to it from an outside site meant "Red Herring" or that they intended to link to the page with the list of tropes?

Neither seems particularly likely, to be honest; I'm at a loss to explain how it has inbounds at all.

Any time you want to check inbounds, replace "Main.Dead Herring" with the page address.

At a guess, it probably has inbounds because it's a great name for a trope. It's just too bad we don't (yet) have anything to fit the name.

Entertainingly, one of the inbounds is about exactly that.

Oh, and nearly all of them are either false inbounds or else not confirmable.

I think that, assuming we care about these uncomfirmable inbounds, redirecting this page to any kind of related index is more useful than redirecting it to the term it's Snow Cloned off. Since the index has more diverse content, it is more likely to contain whatever it was that the user is looking for.

So, are we set to redirect this to Death Tropes?

EDIT: Actually, the name seems like it would fit Dead Star Walking. Any thoughts on making this a redirect to that?

How's that a red herring, though? I mean, I guess it's kind of a fakeout on a meta level, but when I think of "red herring" I think of something actually misleading in the context of the story.

They're both about misleading the audience that something or someone is more important than they really are. I think it's a good fit.

I'd actually prefer the name to Dead Star Walking, to be honest. After all, that is a meta Red Herring that relies on audience awareness of the cast-list, rather than the actual plot elements, to increase the impact of the unexpected death nicely.

Well, unless the headliner is somebody like Sean Bean, of course. Hmm... spotted a couple of problems. <gets out the staple gun to add some tropes to the explanations... doubt anybody will mind what I'm about to do...>
