The General Religion, Mythology, and Theology Thread

Go To

Since we've gotten told to stop talking generally about religion twice in the Homosexuality and Religion thread and were told that, if we want to talk generally about religion, we need to make a new thread, I have made a new thread.

Full disclosure: I am an agnostic atheist and anti-theist, but I'm very interested in theology and religion.

Mod Edit: All right, there are a couple of ground rules here:

  • This is not a thread for mindless bashing of religion or of atheism/agnosticism etc. All view points are welcome here. Let's have a civil debate.
  • Religion is a volatile subject. Please don't post here if you can't manage a civil discussion with viewpoints you disagree with. There will be no tolerance for people who can't keep the tone light hearted.
  • There is no one true answer for this thread. Don't try to force out opposing voices.

I apologize for my inaccuracies. I had just woken up and my mind was groggy.

Now I'm trying to remember why I thought it was fourteen days. sad

Must have been something else. What could it have been.

Incidentally, I do recommend the Danish Valhalla comics to anyone interested in Norse myth, if you can find it in a language you understand. They take their liberties, but remain mostly true to the spirit of the stories as told in the Eddas, and they blend humour pretty well with some genuine mythic epicness.

The animated series was painful to watch. Shoestring budget?

There was an animated series? I'm only familiar with the movie, which had okay animation by the standards of European cartoons of its time.

When I was being flippant, I was saying this from reading Kevin Crossley-Holland's adaptation of the Eddas and various primary sources. It's a good read and I highly reccomend it for a beginner, let alone actually reading the originals.

I say he's a dick because there's several episodes of evidence. While stealing the mead of poetry, Odin was going under the name Bolverk iirc means evil doer. When meeting the giant's thralls who were farming and posed no threat to him, he kills them with their own scythes.

Another has him disguised as a ferryman, who proceeds to troll the shit out of Thor as a flynting. It's hysterical how both deities are calling each other pussies and acting like douchebros.

Another one that is hilarious by modern standards is a poem where Odin is bitching about some princess who refused his advances, so he goes full MRA, about how women are treacherous and mean.

"Just So" Story myths are probably the weirdest bits of their respective mythologies/religions,aren't they?

And tend to characterize the pantheons quite a bit.

[up][up]IIRC more a case of Exact Words. He didn't break oaths, in fact most oaths, again IIRC, were sworn on his name, but you had to check the fine print.

Please don't just post a video and nothing else. Some of us are on mobile and the like and can't watch it, and some of us don't want to spend half an hour watching a video with no idea what it's about or why we should care.

Especially since the first few minutes seem to be about some random US pastor freaking out about Scandinavians not giving a damn about religion.

I'm yet to finish it but it seems a tad disapointing that they picked the most cartoonish US Pastor possible. They should have picked a less fundamentalist Pastor or Preacher, I think it'd provide a more enriching experience than what we got so far.

[up]I get a feeling though that was kind of the point-they're trying to make US pastors look less sane.

Looking for insane-sounding pastors in the US is lazy.

It is kinda funny how Sweden's Bible Belt is so-called because it's a whopping 14% Christian.

Well, he should've used "body-covering hair" or "body-length hair", because "body hair" has a totally different meaning.

No I mean body hair.

To quote:

According to medieval legend the Magdalene had spent a period of repentance as a desert hermit after leaving her life as a prostitute and her life as a follower of Jesus. Her story became conflated in the West with that of Saint Mary of Egypt, a 4th-century prostitute turned hermit, whose clothes wore out and fell off in the desert. In earlier medieval depictions Mary's long hair entirely covers her body and preserves her modesty, but in these her hair is more naturalistic and does not do so. Instead she has a coat of hair somewhat like a dog's, ending rather neatly at the neck, wrists and ankles, suggesting derivation from a theatrical costume, as with the feather suits.

There are pictures of this. They look really odd.

I like that the Angels are nice enough to feed her and braid her hair, but not give her actual clothes.
