Creating Franchise Pages Wherever Appropriate

Go To

This thread is for questions regarding creating or cutting pages in Franchise/ namespace and Franchise Index.

As a reminder, being a Series Franchise doesn't mean a Work can have a Franchise/ page. For that it needs existing (not Red Link) and connected (official releases for the same trademark) Work pages in 3 different Mediums, not 3 pages for the same property in general.

If it doesn't meet those criteria, the section about related releases can be on page of the first installment.

Now, I don't know about you, but we don't seem to have that many Franchise pages.

For instance, Video Games. Take a look at this page. I guarantee that we don't even have that many listed in the Franchise namespace.

Also, I set up Franchise pages for Duke Nukem, Deer Hunter, and Grand Theft Auto.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to list multiple games in a Franchise page as opposed to a Video Game page?

That does seem to be the consensus, based on other game series misplaced in the Franchise namespace.

And while working on Bioshock, I noticed several other VG-only series being in /Franchise/. After 500-odd wicks for Bioshock, I can't say I'm enthusiastic about jumping on the next one once I get the 300 or so remaining Franchise/BS wicks. tongue

You know, after looking at the number of wicks VideoGame.God Of War has, I think I'm going to move Franchise.God Of War to VideoGame.God Of War Series instead.

Down to 100 wicks on Franchise.Bio Shock. Blech, now I remember why I stopped with mass wick fixing. tongue

Okay then, time for us to take a trip to the past...revisiting the giant broken mess that inadvertently arose from my very first ever TRS thread. Since I helped make this mess, I'm happy to start the cleanup, but I'll need help.

The page in question: Franchise.Battle Tech Expanded Universe.

For those wondering how this happened, the page was originally created in the before times, when namespaces were not used to distinguish between works and tropes (both went in the Main/ namespace). The page was created due to the original BattleTech page becoming a bit too bloated and confusing due to it being used to cover the entire media. So me and this other troper came up with the idea to spin off the books and animated cartoon into their own page. And since Star Wars at the time had a page devoted to its (no-longer-canon) Expanded Universe, that's what we called it.

Apparently at some point, someone decided that the page needed to be moved to the Franchise namespace, which isn't right and doesn't really fit the current scheme of how works are handled. I don't know who that was, but that's not appropriate for the Franchise namespace.

So what we have to do now is split the books off into Literature.Battle Tech, the cartoon off to WesternAnimation.Battle Tech, and then retool the whole thing under the more correct Franchise.Battle Tech (drawing pieces from the current tabletop game's work page). Does that sound like a good plan, or does anyone have any suggestions or alternate ideas?

And on another note, Franchise/Bioshock is finished save for one wick on a locked page. Edit request posted in the FAQ forum thread about locked pages.

Got Sandbox.Battle Tech up with a description draft for the Franchise page, as well as several folders to help with sorting out the work on each of the separate pages. Let me know what you think.

Found another videogame-only franchise page: Franchise.Metroid. I will try to move it to VideoGame.Metroid

It has an official Manga. But it still doesn't have more than two mediums. Not counting Metroid content as part of other things(like Samus is in the Captain N comics, but that's not a Metroid comic).

Just pointing it out that it's not a pure video game series, that's all.

...It's weird having so many websites and no way to properly display now, lol.

Can I ask why the LOTR Franchise page is Franchise.Tolkiens Legendarium and not under Franchise. The Lord Of The Rings? I know the former might be more technically correct, but the latter is far more searchable. (It doesn't help that people keep linking to the latter when it doesn't actually exist as a page.)

Should National Lampoon have a franchise page? Seems to be only films.

National Lampoon should be located in the Creator namespace.

Can we file Franchise.Scooby Doo as another in the "all the works are inside a single namespace" category, and move the page accordingly?

No, Scooby-doo actually has the requisite three mediums (film, TV, and video games) but the page is trying to cover too many things at once. It could use an overhaul to fit our style of sorting, rather than IMDB style.

My first recommendation is to turn WesternAnimation.Scooby Doo, Film.Scooby Doo, and VideoGame.Scooby Doo into pages that sort their respective medium pages (and Red Link the ones we don't have pages for).

Whoops, missed the video game entry.

I admit to being slightly hyperbolic about the only one medium thing, but there's only a few live-action films among all those cartoons, so...

That's why they need to be split by medium.

Something I noticed in an IP thread for Dirty Communist:

The consensus for a new pic is a parody comic book cover done by National Lampoon, so I searched the wiki to find the appropriate wick for the image. What I found was that while a few of the movies done under the "National Lampoon" label have their own pages, the only NL related page beyond those is Franchise.National Lampoon. As far as I can tell there are no other NL pages for any media other than live-action film. Since /Franchise is the wrong namespace, where would be the right one?

(There's a secondary issue with that Franchise page, namely that it's a stub, but that's not this thread.)

Post #165 asked that question already. Since National Lampoon is an organization that made magazines and films, I said in post166 that it should be Creator/ namespace.

In any case, there's still the issue of page content, though that's beyond the scope of this thread. One step at a time, I guess.

Should M*A*S*H be converted to a Franchise page? There's a series of novels, a film and a TV series, plus a spinoff of the movie and a spinoff of the TV series.

Also The Tick. It has the comic series, the animated series and the live action series.
