IGN had a big retrospective article on Naughty Dog a while back in which they talked to various Naughty Dog employees past and present about the company, their games and their history. Jason Rubin said of Way of the Warrior "It was what it was." Given that they've moved on to bigger and better things than a Mortal Kombat clone since then, it sounds like Rubin at least sees it as an Old Shame.

I was thinking a while back in fact about Naughty Dog's pre-Playstation games, specifically who owns the rights to them. If it's Naughty Dog, then they could conceivably be brought back, though I doubt they would be revived.

It would be interesting if ND did a new fighting game. They could make it more fast paced than the MK-clone of yesteryear, plus it could have an awesome story. (This is Naughty Dog we're talkin' about) It was what it was but it could be more...

Naughty Dog owns my heart. I know they don't have anything to do with the brand anymore, but their Crash Bandicoot games filled the hole in my childhood where most people put football. And the Uncharted games are pure excellence (no matter what Yahtzee says). I still gotta pick up TLOU, though.

Back to topic, though, I don't think the PS 4 will lack for killer apps (even if it isn't just a single one, rather than several, spread out). Personally, between FFXV, KHIII, Uncharted 4 and I Nfamous Second Son, my purchase is assured.

[up][up][up]As far as I know, the only pre-Play Station games that have gotten revived are Shadow of the Beast and a short string of other old Psygnosis titles.

I remember watching the Game Grumps play Skyblazer, and thinking about how good it would look today on the PSN (in the same vein as the Strider reboot). It's funny watching the credits roll to a game on the SNES, and seeing so many names that would become Sony executives.

I think if Shadow of the Beast does well, they'll likely continue doing that.

@cassidy: i was just mentioning one other possible reason to buy a PS 4 (which is in fact my reason) that doesn't include a must-have game. Sure, most people will just deal with having multiple devices, but you don't need most people to be a success.

It's easy to forget, but most people don't play video games. Even fewer play games on non-mobile devices. Despite that, there's still a thriving $65 billion industry devoted to it—$27 billion of which is accounted for by the console market. And on the other side of the coin, the home entertainment device industry is something around $145 billion. Why single-mindedly pursue one of those industries when you already have a foothold in both? Why ignore the fact that the overlap between the two is not insignificant?

Realistically, yeah, most people are not going to buy a PS 4 for games, and most people are not going to buy a PS 4 for home entertainment. Realistically, though, less than 1000 companies in the world can say they have most people in their respective markets.

Even devices that provide the same raw functionality may fill a different niche. A smartphone is useful because it's portable, a desktop PC is useful for work, a tablet or laptop is useful for casual browsing in, well, your lap.

There's never going to be a all-in-one device which is the only thing people use.

As for the PS4 being a replacement for a bluray player, it's way too expensive for that. You can find a bluray player with Netflix/Hulu Plus/Amazon Instant Video/Youtube apps for much less than that. Another thing to note is that the PS4 does not have DLNA support.

[up] Well of course you're not going to buy a PS 4 just because it plays Blu-Rays. But it doesn't hurt. I was looking into getting a Blu-Ray player for my basement when I saw the PS 4 at E3 last year and decided that I wanted it. As long as you're already getting a PS 4, you don't need a separate box just for Blu-Ray.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-03-27-uncharted-4-director-justin-richmond-leaves-naughty-dog-for-riot-games

Another dev has left SCE Worldwide. The persisting narrative for the last several months has been that the 1st-party developers are in some major trouble; it's hard not to take that stance when so many major creative talents take off in only a week. However, a new article suggests that they really are just restructuring, and are heading into the re-hiring period at this point in time.

http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/27/after-the-layoffs-sony-is-now-working-on-hiring-again-insider-explains-what-happened/

And I'm still convinced that SSM deserved what they got. Why would you need to re-tool a game three times? This one developer has managed to cost Sony 150 million dollars in the last 5 years. I stand by my calling them The Millstone earlier on.

never said that the PS 4 was meant to replace phones or workstations—just that it's not a bad idea for home entertainment systems. personally, i'm not willing to spend 30-60 seconds a day (~3-6 hours a year) fiddling with remotes/keyboards/wires to switch between highly specialized devices just to save $100.

then again i also enjoy throwing my wallet around like a fool, and do indeed own an apple tv, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, a smartphone, a tablet, a cable box, a 360, and a ps4. only four of those are connected to the TV/sound system, though, and only one of them has been turned on in the past week.

I'd like to clear something up about that article I posted above.

http://www.gamepur.com/news/14146-driveclub-game-director-slams-insider-false-info-layoffs-apologizes-receive.html

Drive Club's director says Pete Dodd got his story completely wrong, and he in fact had to leave the project to be with his son.

Just to prevent any further defamation.

Bit late to report this, but passed 7 million consoles sold. There's no ambiguity anymore, they have a commanding lead on this generation.

[up]Wonderful news.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/457642/xbox-original-tv-programming-to-debut-in-june/

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/457739/xbox-tv-boss-says-playstations-tv-commitment-is-unclear/

So, some Xbox boss thinks Sony should be more committed to TV. Raise your hand if you want more seasons of The Tester...

Meanwhile, Curve Studios says that Sony "gets it" regarding how to work with Indie devs.

I think having separate priorities in the console race is a good way to see which method fails faster.

The other day I came this close to finally picking up a PS 4. I game across an EB Games that had a few in stock, but I declined for the simple reason that I'd actually gone to that particular EB to get my pre-order money back (I know a place I can get one for even cheaper).

[up]In the past couple of years, Sony have made Braking Bad, Hannibal, and The Boondocks, and have played a huge part in House of Cards. You bet your ass I want them to make more TV.

They're also the ones that keep Community on the air against all odds.

Sony is a mult-faceted company. They don't just do Playstation. The trick is, they don't push the TV terribly hard when they're doing Playstation events. I think there was one mention at E3 last year about Sony Television, and then they moved on.

I'm just concerned if one company gets The lion share of the market it's gonna become complacent like the Sony did with the PS 3. Better to have them all in a constantly in a state of eternal battle then to have your personal favourite system declared king.

That that said Sony has sent to about mending it's ways and paid a lot of attention to the needs of its consumers and the talent in the indie scene.

Aye. Even if they do achieve the most major success in this gen, I don't think the people working there now are going to just forget what happened with the early days of the PS 3.

Sony got a lions share of the market with the Ps1, and they followed that up with the Ps2. Following that pattern, we don't have to worry until the Ps6 at the least. And by then I doubt we'll even still have consoles.

I think it's willful blindness to think that what we think of as "consoles" won't be drastically different in 15 years. If Playstation Now works even remotely like it's supposed to, that's plenty of time to rig all "console" gaming through download-services, like Netflix.
