Like A Broken Record: Let's face it, its funny when audio technology goofs up, especially when it's not supposed to; it's always good to make sure that that that...

Broken Record: Something is repeated over and over and [...] and over again, more often than not to the point of an Overly Long Gag.

Safe to say that the first entry is an inferior duplicate and could be cut or redirected after transferring examples there - it's has less content than the second page, and has less explanation.

Other concerns:

  • Like A Broken Record has a short statement saying that repetition not caused by a malfunctioning device is described in Broken Record. This is awkward, as "Like a" is reserved for metaphors instead of physical malfunction.
  • Broken record also appears to be a magnet for limited-context examples. Namely, they just take a random phrase such as "Sata andagi! Sata andagi! Sata andagi!" and plop it in without describing how it works (i.e. is it malfunctioning, is someone doing a madness mantra, etc.)
  • In both pages, I've seen examples that just focus on words and ignore the musical pitch with the lyrics. Since it varies, it doesn't meet the requirements of the trope.

Like A Broken Record is a snowclone of the same thing it's The Same but More Specific of. Plus it's one of the least funny self-demonstrating articles I've ever read.

Merge.

No, the other one.
I think the funny thing is that Like A Broken Record describes a broken record, while Broken Record describes something like a broken record. That is, Like A Broken Record is about an actual broken record or other device that causes repetition, while Broken Record is about lyrics or stuff that sounds or gives the impression it's a broken record.

I think they're different tropes, though. Broken Record is really just about repetition of words. Nothing more. It's really a bit chairsy.

Like A Broken Record sounds more like an actual trope, in that it uses a technical failure for comical or artistic effect.

So in other words, we need to flip the descriptions.

Sounds doable for me.

No, the other one.
[up]No, titles. Or descriptions and examples. I was referring to that the names of the tropes are flipped, if that wasn't clear. The examples follow the descriptions.

If we do end up keeping LIBR, should we retitle one or both of them to prevent confusion?
9 AnotherDuck14th Feb 2013 12:52:27 AM from Stockholm , Relationship Status: In season
No, the other one.
Well, I'd suggest to first decide what to do with the tropes, then what to do with the names. I mean, if one ends up getting deleted, I think that name can serve as a redirect for the other, no matter which way it goes. And even if I want to change names, I do tend to be one of the stricter people here on misuse/underuse being an issue, which hasn't yet been demonstrated.

For evidence of misuse, check out the history of Characters.Minecraft. Several "characters" used Like A Broken Record where Broken Record should have been used. While I did correct that, I can see how easily someone would confuse the tropes, especially since LIBR is a Non-Indicative Name. As for my opinion....

While I would understand if LIBR was deleted and/or the entries were merged, I do not personally agree with this, as I believe the two tropes have enough to distinguish themselves from each other. The way I see it, a better option would be a name swap (aesthetically the best, IMO, but not without its problems), or renaming LIBR to something more descriptive, like Repetetive Audio Glitch.

After massive amounts of intense discussion, I see the following options:

  • Do nothing
  • Merge the two pages
  • Swap two pages
  • Rename glitch version to "Repetitive Audio Glitch"; metaphorical version could use either name.
  • In the metaphorical version, add a statement where you could technically make anything sound glitchy by removing context.

[up] I would go with option number 4 on your list - rename the literal broken record (title w/ the word "glitch" would be good, yeah, I think I like Repetitive Audio Glitch) and keep Broken Record for the metaphorical use.

3 or 4 are both ok, but I think 4 is better, because otherwise the names are still confusingly close.
"Existential Despair" is an oxymoron.

[up] He said "Repetitive Audio Glitch", not "Audio Repetitive Glitch". XD

But yeah, it looks like everyone is in support of renaming it to this.

Ah, sorry! Of course. The current titles are too similar.

Do we need a crowner, or can we make the change?

[down] Rollcall? What is that? Must look it up in administrivia. It seemed like we agreed to go w/ changing the title of literal meaning and keep Broken Record for the metaphor.

[down][down] Thanks. Of course... I've seen it, I've used it... I'm just being stupid not quite myself today.

A rollcall, you mean? Or a plain crowner?

Rollcall is the unofficial name for the 'crowner by post' method that's been being used since the crowners have been down.
