Oh, that'd definitely apply. The Spiky-Eared Pichu is a specific individual, after all. Celebi was not, but that's not the key point here. Although that may affect whether it's 100% accurate, but the hatred for a specific individual is very justified, especially after we learn how awful it is. It can apply for more than one trope, after all.

Replacement Scrappy for Spiky-Eared Pichu works, as well as Ethnic Scrappy for Jynx (I just read one of Irene's posts).

I should point out that I already added Jynx under Unfortunate Implications before this discussion took place. It's properly cited and everything, so you don't have to worry about that. I agree with most of these changes, since every Pokémon species has it fans even if it isn't competitively viable.

I would add that not every species/race/class/whatever has to be competitively viable; that it should is something of a toxic meme among gamers. Tiers are both necessary and inevitable in any competitive environment with more than trivial complexity, and the constant demands for "perfect balance" are chasing a chimera.

Hence only significantly notable examples should be in Tier-Induced Scrappy.

Also, should the trope be updated to note it only applies to literal characters, not species itself(it does help that most species have far better and more accurate tropes)? This would severely help cleanup and make sure shoehorning in complaints are less likely.

That's not a bad idea, although the description is long enough as it is.

[up]No she's not? She's almost universally reviled. And on the Xillia page there's only Tier Induced Scrappies, which are different than Scrappies.

[up][up][up]But that's just not true. All the hate around her is well-documented. It's so bad, in Japan especially, that a DLC was made to try to counteract the hate she was getting because people felt Alisha was getting dumped on by the story to make Rose look good and no one liked her. There was also a bunch of controversy over the director having a crush on Rose's VA and thus changing the story in late phases just to give Rose a bigger role.

Also, the Tier Induced Scrappy trope is just about disliking a character from a gameplay perspective, which people did. I don't see any erroneous examples on the page.

I believe Ludger and Elle won a popularity contest for best Tales protagonist pair. I doubt they even remotely qualify. Ludger in particular is very popular as far as I've heard.

So, anyway, regardless of what's been wiped here, I still think there's more evidence that Elle doesn't qualify as The Scrappy that that she does, and Ludger won their annual popularity poll by himself. Not sure what span the poll has, but from the looks of it it's by far the largest and most important poll for the series.

Any objections to me removing those two?

No objections. It's really hard to believe "everyone" or the vast majority can be a scrappy anyway from a single game.

I believe Elle is a Base Breaker, and Ludger is pretty popular so he doesn't qualify. The poll only covers Japan so it's not a great way to figure out whether someone is a Base Breaker or falls under Americans Hate Tingle but yeah, they're probably not scrappies if they scored okay.

So suddenly, I feel the need to cover the human character in the Pokemon games. (haven't seen Pokemon anime in ages)

  • Cheren and Bel Bianca: They do have fair share of fans. So they should count as base breakers. It's not like YMMV page doesn't allow Base Breaker. Not sure about Bianca's dad though, I haven't play Generation 5 for a long time. Cut.
  • Shauna, Tierno and Trevor: Same as above. I guess the only one that actually isn't well liked is Tierno, though I heard he's popular in Japan. Cut.
  • Youngster Joey: does the fans like joey or is it the opposite?
  • Fennel: With Dream World being no longer accessible, the reason for disliking her isn't relevant anymore. Cut.
  • Player Character: To put it bluntly, the player characters in Pokemon don't really have any characteristic because they have little to none speaking roles. Rosa and Nate were hated for their design, but that's it. Cut.

Tropes don't have a "relevancy", per-say. We speak as if it's always happened. The Dream World thing should stay regardless of it no longer being accessible. If people stopped hating Funnel since the Dream World was cut, that can be noted, though. But that doesn't mean he/she wasn't hated.

Joey is the basis of a meme. He's probably worthy of being cut.
