@AOS:Trying to remember Original Life with Better Days? Oh yeah, all great Russian novelists wrote Straw Character like Dostoevsky for example! Some people consider it an author's duty to produce Author Tract.

Blue-and-Orange Morality! It's my new favorite trope! Also, it's my signature trope! It's also going to be my Catchphrase!Really now. :/ Because Author Tract seems like a really lazy way to get a point across.
"Oh hey yeah let's just get the character to talk for fifty paragraphs non-stop on the point I'm trying to make. Easy!"
Just add some Strawmen and Logical Fallacies and you're good to go!

Kami; You have grossly mischaracterized the entirely of Russia's authors there. Because.. uh, that's just like saying every author ever produced one dimensional characters. Or wrote books where every single character was one dimensional. And basically just ignored my point entirely with irrelevant and poorly worded drivel.
When every single thing you write is an author tract, you're an incredibly boring writer. There are several authors who've found subtler and far more entertaining ways to get their points across.
@AOS: If that's so why does Straw Character say:
- 19th century Russian novelists, particularly Dostoyevski, are fond of this trope and will very frequently work tangents about the philosophical/political issues of the time into the dialog, even when it doesn't really have anything to do with what people are talking about. Frequently this involves having a fashion chasing idiot arguing espousing Enlightenment ideals to somebody taking the side of simple virtues of the Russian peasantry/Orthodox Christianity.
Have you actually read any of those books? I read Crime and Punishment and while most characters embody certain types of ideas, they were by no means Straw Characters.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.kami, you're kind of falling for one major mistake a lot of newbie tropers fall for; letting the tropes define you and the world around you, or trying to apply fictional writing devices to the real world.
Nah applying tropes to reality's cool, so long as you do it with finesse.
Finessssssssssssssse. Yeah you elongate that s, baby.
