His subordinate is also the insane leader of an insane cult that wishes to bring him into the world to usher its destruction... with absolutely no reward for succeeding (well, unless you count the end of mankind as a reward).

Then again, the end result of Grima awakening is revealed to be a dystopian world with undead everywhere, and mankind not totally destroyed (but inching closer to it for every second that passes), so what Grima actually wants to do is unknown.

I'm sure there must be an SMT character like that, but the only one remotely close to that I can think of is Hikawa, and he doesn't really fit the bill.

Shomonkai leader wanted to free mankind from God. When you grant his wish in Yuzu's 8th Day he is happy and turns himself into the police to pay for the crimes he committed.

For some reason, that makes me think of Ikutsuki from Persona 3, though who knows if Persona elements will show up in SMT X FE.

The only person I can think of doing a world destroying deal with no reward is Raguel from Devil Children. Literally planned on unelashing a Dark-Law God of Evil because he wasn't able to take over the world and said God wants to wipe out all existence.

I actually kind of wonder if any of the SMT spinoffs will be represented in this game. It would probably fill the character quota on the SMT side to balance with the Fire Emblem side...though I guess we kinda have the demons for that too...

It looks like Persona, Devil Survivor and Devil summoner are probably out, with a focus on the "core" SMT games, i.e., the ones that carry that name in Japan.

I can probably see Devil Summoner make it in, as DS and Soul Hackers did seem to take the place of the "main" series during the PS 1 era, with DS even being labeled SMT.

Either way, though the setting of Awakening means it turns into Lovecraft Lite, Grima and the Grimleal are actually kinda terrifying when you think about it, given how Lovecraftian they are and the fact that they succeeded in at least one timeline, maybe more.

Yeah, but thinking even more about it, it could actually have turned into quite the traditional Cosmic Horror Story as well if certain things didn't happen, which I think is pretty cool.

Introductory cutscene: Marth accompanies the false prophet(insert fire emblem/Megaten character of your choice) then a brief tutorial where you play as Marth and help the false prophet butcher the last line of defenders from the throwaway country they are about to take sovereignty away from (maybe Iran or a fantasy counterpart of Persia).

Flashback a decade or eight to an evil shape shifting demon, possibly Ba'al or Ba'alat, paving the way for the false prophet by spreading lies and discord throughout the world(s). On the continent of Tellius it takes the form of Ashera and appears to the Begnion Empress who is overjoyed to have finally received a message from the goddess. After Dain's defeat Crimea, Gallia and Hatari are bringing Tellius's age old conflicts to an end so Fake!Ashera entices the largest power on the continent to war with the others, ensuring if not awakening of the chaos god, then at least backwardness and division in the future generations when the prophet arrives.

Sephiran is at a loss. He thinks this war is a good thing but at same time he knows that is not the real Ashera. His apprehensiveness indirectly affects Sanaki, who starts to doubt her goddess and comes to realize the goddess is a lie. By the time she realizes though, not!Ashera has already departed to another continent and because of their skirmishes the chaotic god's arrival is upon them! A desperate Empress prays, pleads, with Ashera, begging for help and finally Ashera answers. Says the goddess "Not only have the Laguz and Beorc warred again, proving themselves unworthy, but a demon seems to have defiled the land so it is unworthy as well."

The the demon arrives on the continent of Jugdral to sow more discord but the heroes of Genealogy of the Holy War have unexpected allies, Akemi Nakajima and Yumiko Shirasagi of Digital Devil Story. You start off as them in the Valhalla Corridor, Aekmi tried to send a demon back to Makai but thanks to a trick by Loki the demon ended up where he did not intend and has no doubt continued wreaked havoc there. So after dealing with Loki they arrive on Jugdral.

Meanwhile on Tellius Ashera's judgment has been misdirected, to Japan by accident of the Shin Megami Tensei heroes. The Beorc and Laguz are confused and still worried about the dark god of Chaos but it means them no harm and takes the vessel of what it considers to be a nonthreatening girl to put them at ease. It eventually convinces that Ashera needs their help, even though she is petty and probably does not deserve it, then transports an army to Japan to meet up with the Megami Tensei heroes, who were already in the middle of an angel/demon conflict Ashera just made worse.

Cut back to the present. The God of the Devil games we love so much or perhaps an alternative powerful demon who could convincingly pull the job off like Nix or Louis Cypher has raised the beloved ruler Marth from the dead to accompany its prophet, with hopes Marth's popularity will help legitimize them in the eyes of the people. Failing that his blessed sword, shield which is a fire emblem and military prowess will get the job done.

But following not to far beyond Marth and the false prophet are the heroes from Digital Devil Saga, unlikely saviors who just arrived in the world. They have to unite with the heroes from Strange Journey, the surviving Laguz and Branded from Tellius along with the descendents of the units the player paired up in Judgral. edit: feel free to build on it

Personally, I thought an intro would be YHVH and Lucifer running into RNG-Goddess Anna and humorous things led from there. But then that's me plotting a semi-Affectionate Parody of both series.

I'd like to point out that Fire Emblem Gaiden had much more lovecraftian bad guy than Grima :P It even had tentacles and everything!
