Just made this topic out of my bored mind. I'm one of those who grew up watching Slam Dunk and through it I have realized how awesome the game of basketball is.

Though I really don't watch basketball anymore except the NBA Playoffs, I've always imagined a basketball story with the potential to become the next Slam Dunk. Kuroko No Basuke is definitely up there in terms of popularity, but no, I don't really buy it because of its physics-defying moves inspired by The Prince Of Tennis.

If I wanted to watch basketball anime, at least give me something that actually follows the laws of physics, even if they have different rules from say, NBA or FIBA.

But anyways, back to what I'm saying. I've been trying out different team combinations right at the top of my head:

  • Your typical anime basketball team. Weak at the start, but gets stronger once the players recognize their strengths and weaknesses and play as a team. That said, I've been thinking of some possibilities:
    • A team which has no choice but to play small ball because they don't have big men on the team.
    • A Ragtag Bunch of Misfits trying to win a tournament arc for a historically winless school. Basically like the basketball version of the Deimon Devil Bats.
    • A team that lacks a true point guard, and must therefore compensate by having SG's or SF's take on the role of ball handler. I think Ro-Kyu-Bu is an example of this, because they really don't have a natural PG, although they have a true Center. They eventually did have a dedicated ball handler later on, but that's just an SF converted into a Point Forward, not a natural PG.
    • A team with a weak bench, like Shohoku. Naturally, the story would focus on the starting five and the sixth man Kogure.
    • A team with a strong bench, so that everyone in the team can play reliably when needed.
    • The Opposing Sports Team would be like the historically strongest team in the region or even the entire country. Strong in everything, so it would be pretty hard to exploit their weaknesses if they have at least one.

As for protagonists, most basketball anime I have ever seen are Forwards.

  • Hanamichi Sakuragi is a Power Forward.
  • Kazuhiko Aikawa and Natsuki Ogata are Small Forwards, but the latter borders on Combo Guard (PG/SG) because he's rather undersized for an SF.
  • Tomoka Minato from Ro-Kyu-Bu is an SF playing Point Forward, but turns into a fully dedicated scoring SF once her teammate Saki Nagatsuka, also a natural SF, is bumped up to Point Guard.
  • Tetsuya Kuroko doesn't have a listed position, but since he's only good at passing, him at Point Guard is pretty much given.

So I kept on wondering why they haven't made a Point Guard (sorry, Kuroko, but you're just not cut to be a PG) or Center protagonist yet. But I could guess that it's because the Center is The Big Guy of the Five-Man Band. So I'm having different ideas for protagonists from the top of my head and I feel like I had to let it out like now. Here they are:

  • A rookie point guard who tries to help his school varsity team to success while trying to handle his senpais' insane shenanigans.
  • A person who dislikes his/her height and size (just not to the extent of Airi), but later finds confidence in it once s/he learned how to play basketball. S/he would be more than likely to be the true Center of a team where a natural PF plays C.

In all likeliness, I would like to base my teams from either the current NBA teams (OKC, Miami, Memphis, Rose-era Chicago, etc.) or from the other all-time greats not featured before (Isiah Thomas-era Detroit Pistons, championship-era Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs dynasty). However, it seems that I am more inclined to base the hero team from the Oklahoma City Thunder, while the rival team from the Miami Heat.

For a more Eyeshield Twenty One flavor to the story, I'm inclined to base the hero team from the 2004 Detroit Pistons and the Opposing Sports Team from the 2004 Los Angeles Lakers.

That would be all for now, I could get better ideas later. I would like to know first what do you think about these.

Thanks in advance.
