Okay, two things about this image:

  1. It's from Memebase.
  2. Even if it weren't a meme, it's still not even remotely an example. The top image isn't from a Final Fantasy VII cutscene; it's from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a CGI movie made (iirc) a full decade after the game. The bottom image is a cosplayer. (A funny one, but still...)

I don't think this can really be pictured, to be honest. Most of the examples I can think of would be better on one of the subtropes.

Gameplay and Story Segregation is about the rules of the game universe applying differently in gameplay vs. the story, not about differences in graphical quality between cutscenes and normal play. I agree it's a meme and misleading. Supporting pull.

Incredibly misleading. Pull it.

How would we go about picturing this, anyway? Showing off some madcap stunt from a cutscene, and then a really boring-looking shot from the actual game that cutscene came from?

[up][up]Yeah, that's what I thought...I wasn't quite sure if maybe I was misinterpreting the trope, though, so I didn't mention it in my post.

[up]But wouldn't that go under Cutscene Power to the Max? That's what I mean about images falling better under the subtropes, simply because it has so many of them. (I personally had an idea relating to Chrono Trigger, but I realized that, first, it would apply better to Overrated and Underleveled, and, second, it's a spoiler. Although idk, maybe CT is old enough that spoilers aren't particularly necessary.)

Also, I've gone ahead and pulled the image from the page, since apparently memes are an insta-pull.

Would it be possible to use the Phoenix Down complaint against permanent story deaths? Not that FFVII would have any of that... *cough*

But yeah, that's misleading. It suggests that the trope is about difference between gameplay and FMV graphic quality.

It's not actually a meme AFAIK, but I'm not gonna object to it being pulled already.

[up]It's not a meme per se, but it's definitely an image macro, which I understand is heavily frowned upon here. And there's the issue of the image literally having "videogames.memebase.com" on the bottom.

[up][up]That's a pretty well-known example...my idea would be to have an image showing Aerith killed in battle, with the menu showing the player about to revive her with a Phoenix Down, and then a screencap of her Plotline Death. (I think we've long reached the point where "Aerith dies" is no longer a spoiler.) The problem is, I don't know how one would get such an image. A screencap of the death scene is simple enough to find, but "battle scene with Aerith dead and menu showing player about to use a Phoenix Down" is awfully specific.

The idea behind it is good, even the text (though we'd want to make that look less macro-y, we do sometimes add text to images). Problem is, it's the wrong trope and I can't find one it'd fit on.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Pull it. The image macro format is a no-no and it's not illustrating the trope anyway.

If it's possible, this trope would probably work best with a video or 2, one showing a cutscene where the character uses an ability to devastating effect, and another for comparison which shows them using the same ability under player control with significantly less impressive results. I can't think of any photos that could adequately show that off. However, a webcomic could work if anybody know of one too.

It'd only be possible if Echo Chamber decided to do something.

[up][up][up][up][up]I think it'd be a 3D variation of Graphics-Induced Super-Deformed (FF7 is actually listed under the examples there, in fact). It's already got an image on it, though.

What about putting the pulled image on Animation Bump? We could remake it in a less image-macroish way, too.

It's Not An Example. It's Graphics-Induced Super-Deformed (FF 7's field character models were based on the look of 16-bit sprites and used separate character models for combat scenes).

I have a suggestion, but no pictures (at the time of this post)

The opening movie for Borderlands 2 shows Axton deploying the Sabre Turret he stole before deserting ths military. In the movie, the turret is filled with upgrades and enhancements that the player can eventually obtain by leveling up that character. However, when you reach level 5 and can deploy the turret, it starts out all dinky and weak. There is no given explaination why this fully upgraded turret suddenly lost all that power. Oh yes, the gameplay starts immediately following the events of the opening movie.

I'm thinking a comparison shot between the turret jn the movie and when the player can first deploy it. I'll see if I can find some good shots of the gameplay version.

That and the movie turret has more upgrades than is possible with the game's default level cap. But dunno how easily picturable this can be.

Bleh, GIS only gives me artwork of the character and the turret, and various screenshots showing what it looks like at higher levels. Youtube has some videos showing the turret when you get it at level 5, but the players themselves choose not to focus the camera to actually look at it, plus it's nighttime in all the footage.

I suppose I could try to take a picture myself, but it would not turn out all that great.

Considering the length of the actual page, a tall image isn't really a problem either, if we want (and can) to use the full one.
