The Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-up:

Go To

On TV Tropes, it's very common for editors to misuse appearance tropes, as well as tropes whose names make them sound like they could be appearance tropes.

Meaningful Appearance tropes are often misused in ways that overlook the "Meaningful" aspect, resulting in Zero Context Examples and misuse in the form of examples that have no meaning even if the tropes themselves are not People Sit on Chairs.

The Appearance Tropes Cleanup sandbox covers tropes with potential issues. Tropes that simply require cleanup will go through this thread, while tropes that require more significant action will have to go through the Trope Repair Shop.

April 2, 2023 update: This thread is no longer for making changes to tropes, and was brought back from the Projects Morgue solely for cleanup. Making changes to tropes is still a job for the Trope Repair Shop.

So does anyone have a reason to keep Windows To The Soul?

Windows To The Soul found in: 15 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2012 this article has brought 11 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

So no.

I do not think that the names are completely irredeemable. So, I would propose to make a Meaningful Appearance supertrope and then redirect them to it.

[up] It'd be a lot more helpful if we had a page or ykttw for Meaningful Appearance. Least to my understanding of what it is it doesn't seem like there's any trope or decision for Windows To The Soul that could be made in this thread that's hindering at least there being a YKTTW.

Seems like we have agreement on Windows... now.

That said, Personal Appearance Tropes. The Meaningful Appearance YKTTW is going to contain a list of subtropes (both out of purpose and to stop people from using it when there are suitable subtropes), and as we trim the non-tropes from Personal Appearance Tropes, we'll end up with a complete duplicate. So I'd say that Personal Appearance Tropes will have to be merged into the YKTTW as well - unless we want to consider cosmetics and fashion as separate from the YKTTW. Opinions?

I agree with this post. Windows to the Soul tropes suffer because there are two poorly defined tropes with nearly identical. I'd like to keep the name as supertrope for all Eye Tropes. Then this super trope and index would itself be just one item on Appearance Tropes.

I do not like the idea of having a supertrope for eye colours that are meaningful as it seems to me like The Same, but More Specific of a supertrope of meaningful appearances in general.

On other news, someone ought to comment on Jess's appearance YKTTWs, some have tropeworthiness concerns: [1], [2], [3] and [4].

Yes. I didn't refer to them because the issue here are the YKTTWs.

[up][up][up][up] The concept that the eyes somehow provide a clue to a person's true nature that can be relied upon even if the rest of their appearance is insignificant is quite distinct, I think.

Windows of the Soul doesn't deal specifically with eye colors so that can stay (wouldn't be opposed to name change though). Windows To The Soul seems like it's already covered by a lot tropes, and I'm not seeing anything that's hindering us from deleting it.

Windows of the Soul sounds like a supertrope. Perhaps change the description to match that and it will be fine. In any case, it has few wicks.

Windows To The Soul should be merged into it for the following reasons 1. The name. It sounds like the launcher was unaware of the other trope 2. The description is similar. 3. It has fewer wicks.

Windows of the Soul sounds like a supertrope, but it's about something completely different. It's not even an appearance trope, technically.

Should Informed Attractiveness be removed from the indexes Show, Don't Tell and Informed Attribute? As we don't allow writing subjectively about attractiveness, the trope is pretty much a supertrope of all attractiveness tropes.

No. It's still an example of the first two, even if we aren't allowed to write about our feelings on the issue.

Alright, so there so seems to be some agreement that we should get rid Windows To The Soul.

While I'm on the "just cut it" side of this argument, I think we should still do a crowner.

On the crowner, the following go:

[up] Seem to be the two options being proposed. I'm gonna go with cut. I agree with Discar that the two tropes are too different for a merge.

So just cut the first one. I am going to make that crowner.

If it's okay, I added the second option to the crowner.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

What exactly is the logic behind merging these two tropes? Because other than dealing with eyes, they're two very different tropes.

I suspect it's because people keep getting confused about their names.
