Hm, was kind of expecting a story about people on the internet helping out someone who needed it or something. :/ Oh well.

[up]So was I. But Justin Bieber being overtaken by Psy is a damned good start.

I didn't even realize we were still supposed to care about Justin Bieber anymore. Isn't there someone else to whom the internet can turn its wrath? Someone who actually deserves the hate?

He's still a wasteful little twat. He gets famous, releases the same album thrice and does nothing but "love" ballads and songs centered wholly around him and what he wants, gets and "needs". Have you heard "Beauty And A Beat"?

But then again, Psy isn't much better. The only reason he got famous outside Korea is because it's another generic dance song with a retarded dance attached to it. When was the last time anything positive from Korea has been acknowledged? They have good food, really nice animated movies - but that gets swept under the rug for freaking Gangham Style.

The internet is just digging itself deeper as far as I'm concerned. I'm not worried, though: I know this whole thing is a privilege, not a right, and I can stay away from the parts I don't like.

So, you're saying he deserves all the vitriolic, bitter hatred he gets just for being a pop star who makes generic pop music? Cry me a river why don't you. That's hardly worthy of death threats on a daily basis.

That is indeed harsh. I dislike him, but not a fan of death threats.

But being the new popular thing, you can kind of expect that sort of thing happening if you think about it. Every person with influence has gotten some degree of hate: Elvis wasn't the shining beacon of awesome his whole career, I bet David Bowie got a few angry letters when he began and Queen made a few bad choices during their career. I'm not saying I like it or approve of it, but death threats, in their own twisted way, are a part of being a star.

Oh, I never got on the whole Bieber-hating bandwagon either. My attitude towards him and similar pop stars is mostly 'I'm obviously not going to like this, so I'll just ignore it instead of wasting time hating on it'.

Still, I think it says pretty sad things about humanity when something like that is the most viewed YouTube video of all time. Gangnam Style, on the other hand, is all kinds of Crazy Awesome (in the original sense of the phrase), and I support it wholeheartedly.

[up]Well, let's also consider that a large percentage of those people who use You Tube are probably younger people (teenagers especially) who have more time in their lives at the moment to waste on watching You Tube videos. It only naturally follows that something aimed toward them would become massive on that site. And, it only follows that something that appeals to an even wider audience that still includes them would get even more popular.

The thing that irks most about Gangnam style is not the video itself, but the people only pay attention to the crazy dance and not even know what "Gangnam style" means (apparently Gangnam means "south of the river" and it is a rich district in Seoul. The song is mocking the people from there). Here is a translation of the song for the curious. And here's an article from a Korean who lived in Gangnam and her views on the song.

I thought everyone on the internet knew what it's about by now. And, as we know, only the people on the internet matter.

Really, though, you get that with anything that becomes popular. How many people know that "Come Together" was originally supposed to be an election song for Timothy Leary? How people know about Twilight's Mormon undertones? How many people know that Inception's ending is supposed to be ambiguous and that there is no answer to whether or not the top falls? You can't expect everyone to look into everything.

On the internet (or, at least, in certain circles of the internet), maybe. But do you think the majority of its fans do? Do you think they even bothered to find that out?

First time I heard Gangnam Style was on a party, and the guy who played it told everyone what it meant.

Even though the meaning is lost to many, the message has been spread to far many more than if the video had not gone viral.

[up][up]He was the leading advocate for acid usage in the 1960s, he had an ill-conceived campaign to run for president, and he coined the phrase, "Tune in, turn on, drop out," of course referring to LSD.

Oh, and he couldn't help Pete Townshend either.

Alas, it was inevitable. It's better than having One More Night or We Are Never Getting Back Together become the most viewed, that's for fucking certain.

Oh well, at least it gives me great comfort that the Philippines is not the only country that hasn't gotten over this four minute gag.
