"Source 2" Engine in the Works?

Seriously though, a new overhauled Source engine would really be something. Rumours started stirring about this potential development months ago, but this is a step towards confirmation.

At least makes it so that you can cache next level in or something...the loading screen can be darn annoying...

Maybe the introduction of the new engine is the only thing that has been keeping back Half Life 3, or Half Life 2 Episode 3 or Half Life whatever the fuck Gabe Newell is calling it this week?

If so, I hope they get it working and get that g'damned game out at last/

This unfortunately just makes me think Half Life 2: Episode Three is really not going to be seen soon.

Damn. That mean there's gonna be a TF 2:2 now?

Heh, and of course, this means that there will be no Source Engine 3.

Side Note: Valve seems to be one of the few big names in the video game industry to actually know what they are doing, aside from Nintendo and Atlus.

I just hope that this new engine will be more moddable than the current VPK-based Source engine. I want Valve to go back to the system where all you have to do to install stuff like custom skins is just drop the relevant files into relevant folders as opposed to having to edit the VPK files.

I'm sure Half Life 3 will be the first game to roll out with the Source 2. Even though Portal is more popular at the moment, Half Life will always be Valve's "mascot franchise". And a game that big would be the only way to introduce a new engine.

It's so big as the mascot they can't even get it out the door.

My theory is they are doing with HL 3 what they did with HL 2. I just hope we don't get similar increases in loading times to match.

Great, now we get to wait even longer. Gabe is going to die of heart disease before HL 3 gets out the door.

Hopefully Valve won't delay HL3 for every fat joke we make of GabeN, like you did just now.

They have Aperture Science tech automating that for them, so they technicality don't have to do it .

Technically, the first released game for the Source engine was Counter-Strike: Source.

Huh, I always thought it was Bloodlines (which, according to Wikipedia, was released pretty shortly afterwards).

It was, but they were under contract not to publish the game until after HL 2.

Bloodlines is also a way better game than HL 2, so there.

Yeah, that's why they're making another one, right? Oh wait, Troika shut down.

I've always found Half-Life more engaging on a personal level, and I hope with 3 they can showcase the strengths of this new engine.

At least someone make any sort of Spiritual Successor to Deus Ex using the Source 2 engine to closely coincide with HL 3's release...

Maybe episode 3 is just Valve trolling, which they are quite good at.

Even if they are, they're no doubt fully aware of how many people want to get it.

Source 2 is basically confirmed at this point, the only thing is that they haven't officially called it Source 2 yet.

However, what Gabe has been talking about is a game called Ricochet 2. He's named it as a possibility for the first "New Engine" game.

Ricochet was a Half Life mod that was low-quality, had no story, and is generally considered to have been Valve's worst game. It is also Valve's least known game.

Absolutely no-one believes him, given that Ricochet 2 has been used as a Fan Nickname for Half Life 3 before.
