Movie Genres as Train Sets:

A long long time ago, I read one of my late father’s model railroad books. The author talked about the various types of model railroad layout. From figure eights, loops and the basic circle. The point was to disguise that a model train is just going round and round a circle. I was browsing this site while watching some bad anime that got my brain thinking working...

What would your favorite movie genre/trope/work be if it was a train set?

Action Movie: The train goes over a model canyon and then explodes.

Horror Movie: Screams come from the model train.

Twilight: the model train sparkles

Anime (sub): the instructions are in Japanese, but you put together a nice layout. Onlookers talk about how they like the instructions in English and that you put it together wrong.

Anime (dub): the instructions are in English, but they address you as if you’re a 3 year old. You put together a nice layout. On lookers talk about how they like the instructions in Japanese and that you put it together wrong. You suspect that some parts are missing and that it’s really two different kits in one box.

Anime ( Fansub ): the instructions are in English purple monkey dishwasher. You put together a train that dies when it is killed.

What’s your take?

Feel free to add your own

Hey, it prevents anything else from the horror of having to say it shares a genre with Twilight.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Ooh, this sounds fun!

  • Historical fiction: The train set may look fine to the average viewer, but any train buff will quickly spot that the cars are too modern for the engine pulling them, and anyway, that type of locomotive was never used by the railroad it's painted for. (As a train buff myself, I have actually seen sets like this. I've seen several with an F 40 PH in Union Pacific colors.)
  • War movie: The engine and cars are painted in camo, and the set includes at least one flatcar with a missile launcher on it. (Again, I have seen sets like this.)
  • B-movie: The set is titled something like "Golden Mountain Explorer!" Its locomotive won't run, the cars are painted badly, and each car has a huge sticker saying "Golden Mountain Express" slapped on the side.

Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Plan 9 From Outer Space and other similar Ed Wood movies: Several trains crashing into each other, resulting in a hilarious trainwreck.

Trains by Studio Gainax: Every model the design is fitted with a new type of engine, often one copied from abroad to which they give their own peculiar touches. Every one of them is designed to go faster than any earlier make. Whether they succeed or fail, it's a thrilling ride. Oh, and many of them take the existing tracks as guidelines at best, but after their passage they have burned new tracks into the landscape that everyone else uses to the point where it's hard to see how experimental they were at the time.

By Studio Shaft: Slow, elegant trains covered in artistic touches using the most psychedelic of colours. You have to wonder if they know where they're going. Definitely more for the journey than the destination.

By Kyoto Animation: Very high standard of engineering, with no expense spared. An impressive sight to see, towering over all other models. However you realise in time that many are hollow and never get far.

By Studio Wombat: They made this one train years ago that spends three days in each station and you get free philosophy lectures during the ride...

A blog that gets updated on a geological timescale.

Tragedy: Lego people find love on the train before it derails and kills everyone.

Black Comedy: The train derails and kills everyone. Audience laughs.

Science Fiction: The train runs on anti-gravity instead of rails.

Grant Morrison: Understanding the train's design and how it works requires intimate knowledge of every other type of train that's ever been created. Train cars are covered in esoteric imagery with varying degrees of subtlety. The train has a conversation with the person who set it up.

Fantasy: The train is made of wood and powered by Magitech. No matter what the controller does, Orcs of some variety always seem to find their way aboard.

Gimme yer lunch money, dweeb.

Dream Works Animation's Dork Age: the train plays annoying, dated pop music.

Disney Princess: the train is pink and sparkly.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: You assemble a train set that smells odd. The instructions are confusing and result in much angst and crying, but you finally get it put together. All the people in your layout turn into tang. Confused, you put the train set away. Years later you come back and re-do it. This time the train set looks happier.

Family Guy: Peter Griffin says "Hey, remember that time I was a train conductor?". Cutaway Gag of the train crashing, Peter climbing out of wreckage, looking around, sneaking away. Episode continues without comment.

Somehow you know that the time is right.

Studio GONZO: The train set looks good in the box. When you set it up some of the cars are Off-Model, all the female figures have large.. stands. The stopped making the one locomotive you like, but the sets they do make are cool.
