Both are pretty similar. Which do you like better? Post Movie Spongebob for me.

Post-Movie Spongebob. At least that has decent animation, and it's moments.

If you wanna PM me, send it to my mrsunshinesprinkles account; this one is blorked.

I find some of the Gene Deitch actually fascinating to watch as a morbid pleasure. So Bad, It's Good at full effect. "The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit" works precisely because it's pure Deitch weirdness. Not to mention "Buddies Thicker than Water" truly feels like classic Hannah Barbera material; odd sound effects aside, I can totally see it being part of T&J's initial run. "Tall In The Trap" is a decent effort as well.

The true bad note on display is Tom's new abusive owner; "Sorry Safari", "High Steaks" and especially "Down and Outing" are ruined by his sadistic glee over torturing the poor cat.

I don't feel encouraged to pursue Post-Movie Spongebob from what I've seen. I don't find it funny anymore, nor do I find it interesting in other ways, and for my money, "The Thing" is down there with Deitch's Abusive Owner! T&Js. Maybe even worse.

The Gene Deitch shorts I've seen...in all honesty, I never really thought them to be too bad.

Also, I don't like Sponge Bob at all, so, yeah, I can't answer the question the thread poses.

Aside from Tom's abusive owner, what exactly is it that you people dislike so much about the Deitch cartoons?

For many, it's the wonky animation, the surreal sound effects, and Jerry sometimes attacking Tom with no reason. I don't like it much either, but it beats out post-movie Spongebob episodes in terms of writing.

I personally don't like the Chuck Jones T&J cartoons.

The 80s Hanna Barbera Tom and Jerry series was the lowest point of the duo. I liked the Jones toons a lot, the Filmation ones had their moments, and the only really bad things about Detich's run were the Jerkass Karma Houdini owner and the bad animation quality.

I always kinda liked the weird sound effects. But, then, I also like that screwed up WB cartoon intro, so what do I know.

[up]Even lower than the 1992 movie?

Even more. At least the movie had them as antagonists towards the beginning and end, and at least it was a shorter thing than the series with all its episodes. The talking thing never bothered me that much, or at all, really (then again, I liked Matt Frewer's talking Pink Panther). The movie's worst faults were it was sappy and had little of the actual stars compared to the girl, who was the actual focus point.

But it still wasn't as bad as HB's eighties series, which I suspect inspired that Simpsons early episode where Marge forces a new and friendly to each other, and deadly boring, Itchy and Scratchy to happen.

I have read about that one. I haven't seen it or the Filmation series as far as I can remember (though I do own a Jerry plush with the red bowtie he apparently wears in the series). I've been considering binging on all Tom And Jerry-related media when I have the time to (partially because I've been a huge lifelong fan and partially because I'm thinking about starting a retrospective series in tribute to T&J), and that would include those series, as well as all those movies, the newer Tom And Jerry Tales show (anyone know if that's good or not? I saw one episode and thought it was kind of eh, though maybe it wasn't a good example), and even seemingly insignificant stuff like that Gene Kelly Anchors Aweigh movie that Jerry cameos in.

Jerry wears the bowtie in the HB 80s series. He goes au naturel in the Filmation shorts, which also included Droopy segments.

Tom And Jerry Tales is So Okay, It's Average. Not bad, but tries to ape the Golden Age without getting there. It lacks the original's spirit and kinda goes through the motions.

That's the impression I got from what little experience I have with it.

Oddly enough, I've always thought that the Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring movie was one of the few latter day incarnations that has managed to at least capture some of the spirit of the originals. It doesn't quite reach it, but I can safely say that I genuinely enjoy it.

That movie was mostly good, but at times it felt like an ongoing joke that just dragged on.

I liked Tom And Jerry Kids as a kid, but looking at it today, it really kinda annoys me.

The Droopy segments of Kids hold up really well. The T&J stuff, not so much at all. The Spike and Tyke segments fall somewhere in between.

[up]Exactly my thoughts. I think this is a pretty common occurrence in many a series; titular characters' episodes don't hold up so well, yet accompanying shorts turn out to be the show's Ensemble Dark Horse as far as entertainment goes.

Actually, you know what I just realized? The theme song to T&J Kids is almost a carbon copy of the '80s Alvin And The Chipmunks theme.

I've only watched Swtchin' Kitten and High Steaks but at least the latter shows what's wrong with the Deitch shorts. Gene Deitch himself didn't like the original Tom and Jerry shorts, because of their violence and that's why I don't think he understood what kind of violence works for Tom and Jerry and resorted to sadism.

It's not only the budget that made the animation bad also the fact that the Czechs animators didn't have any experience in American style classical animation, whereas many Hanna-Barbera and MGM animators had experience with Disney.

I've never actually seen any Czech animation besides the Deitch shorts. What kind of animation had usually been produced there up to that point?

I really don't know anything about Czech animation but Jiří Trnka is probably their most famous animator and he did puppet animation.

You can read about Gene Deitch's career in Czechs here: http://www.awn.com/genedeitch/gene-deitch-how-succeed-animation/part-two-how-i-did-it/chapter-17-prague-change-life/page/2%2C1
