Given how badly written Secret Empire has been it's no wonder people are actually agreeing with the action of locking up a journalist.

I don't like Sally Floyd, but fictional or not, I'm not inclined to cheer a journalist being thrown in prison, especially for challenging a Nazi. Fuck that. I would've been fine with her losing her job a few years ago, on account of being a shitty journalist, but prison? Nope. And being punished for challenging a Nazi? Double-nope.

I wouldn't want it to happen to any other report in real life. However, I just feel like with Nick Spencer in the seat of anything that it's just going to be grown worthy and invoking lazy real life parallelism.

[up][up]Use of gendered slurs probably. [up][up][up]I agree on principle. But it's Sally Floyd, so I can't feel too bad. Maybe those NASCAR fans will help her out.tongue

Even Nascar fans have standards, and would think she's a shallow bonehead.

In this case its not about standards, principles, journalistic integrity or any moral reasons.

Its just about a particularly irritating & annoying character who is the exception & deserves awful stuff happening to her because she is a particularly irritating & annoying character.

Am I the only one who finds it odd how 90% of people's issues with Sally Floyd have to do with her comments on My Space (which wasn't even the main point of her speech to Steve) and not the fact that she covered up Tony trying to assassinate a diplomat?

I'm not saying there aren't good reasons to hate her but it seems people focus on stuff that's rather minor.

It's like people hating Lex Luthor because he stole forty cakes not because he's a murderer.

The Myspace comment is just more... memorable.

I find that weird as well as the seemingly gender-based hatred.

But I think because of that background, it actually makes a lot of sense to use her in a Captain Hydra story, if it was framed as a sort of Gone Horribly Right where she realized that she had previously supported similar actions as Steve was taking and perhaps questioning to herself whether his being openly Hydra was the only reason she wasn't supporting them this time.

And with Spencer's love of political points, I think it works because to begin with, she's basically your typical Fox News host- well, probably former Fox news host given all of the Ailles and O'Reilly sexual harassment.

Not sure to what extent it's played that way though. I will say from Scans Daily that while having Captain Hydra go on a Trumpian "Fake News!" tirade is a decent choice, I think it's undermined by the chilling outright Nazi rhetoric at the beginning of the conversation where he's justifying Inhuman concentration camps and asserting unconvincingly that they are great places to be.

Those Inhuman camps made me cringe and not even for the right reasons.

"See? See? They're an oppressed minority now! Aren't they awesome? Pls buy their books we beg you."

Meanwhile mutants are getting removed from the story on a truce no Hydra leader would really agree to.

I don't think that Sally Floyd was made to be a Take That! at Fox News, but the fact that she's more like those reporters that focus on shallow pop culture than the real stuff.

[up][up]Saw the scans of that too. Who was that metallic guy that Captain Hydra was going to put in charge instead of Magneto? Xorn?

I don't think that's a terrible idea for in-universe reasons though. It's a definite aspect of Magneto's character that sometimes his behavior and ideology is dangerously close to the same Nazis who victimized him as a child. When this is pointed out in universe, he often has a My God, What Have I Done?, but there's also times where he just owns it, like in the ''First Class' movie. So, while it's not a choice that pleases me, him making a Deal with the Devil with Captain Hydra is an in-character choice. Getting the Red Skulls... Skull works in and out of universe for why he would trust Captain Hydra.

[up] Oh. I thought the idea was that she was saying in her initial appearance that Cap didn't identify with "Real Americans" because he didn't watch Nascar. I vaguely recall that being a big talking point during the George W. Bush administration.

Nah, this is really insulting to his character, including the fact that Wanda is involved in this due to the fact that she is still of Romani heritage and her Jewish half has been retconned.

My feeling is that it's awful that Magneto would do this and I'd much rather see him fighting in the resistance. But I can still totally see him doing this, depending on where his morality is at the moment (in and out of universe).

I can't picture Magneto either acquiescing to a fascist OR agreeing to voluntary self-segregation so this is doubly OOC.

It's the complete and utter lameness of the scene, I assume.

What's unironically presented as an epic breaking speech for one of Marvel America's biggest heroes and symbols ends up boiling down to saying that he's old and has lost touch with "real Americans" because he doesn't pay as much attention to the country's media output and achievements (citing only ones like sports and American Idol and MySpace, two of which are now almost totally irrelevant) as they supposedly do.

I like to think that thing that really broke Cap is a member of the distinguished press (one who covered up a war crime for "the greater good") using pop culture consumerism as a measure of worth.

I prefer that Alternate Character Interpretation, because Sally Floyd is not only terrible as a journalist but as you said she has no right to lecture Captain America about how his ideals are dated when she sold out her integrity for the so-called greater good. Her despicable action shows why those so called ideals still are needed in this day and age.

No. In fact if you look at one of my comments in page 1169 I mentioned how she praised Stark for pulling a Wag the Dog/Canadian Bacon on the country by using Atlantis as the designated villain to build support over SRA. Besides that memoriably cringey line, we all have multiple reasons for hating Sally; and I think this one is the main reason for such heated hatred from the fanbase.

Especially considering the recent comic where she interview Cap to call out on his fascism, yet during the first Marvel Civil War she supports Iron Man FOR being a fascist. I believe there is a trope for that, but I just can't put my finger on what's it called . . .

On an unrelated note, I just read the first chapter of Valiant's Rapture story line and enjoyed a lot! A real good way to start out the Summer of Valiant.

[up]Which game? I suppse the F4 aren't going to be taken out the mothballs any time soon due to that awful movie killing the franchise for a bit.

I did read the latest Steve Rogers and I actually said "womp womp" out loud when Sally Floyd ended up in jail. Though I'm not advocating the imprisonment of journalists, I just thought she walked right into that one.

As for Magneto...ennnnnh...I feel as if the fanbase romanticizes him too much as it is. Yes, he's a Jewish Holocaust survivor who would do anything to protect mutants but on the other hand, he is an awful mutant supremacist terrorist who wouldn't hesitate killing humans and is not for peaceful co-habitation. There is a lot of Depending on the Writer at work here, but yeah the fans need to remember that Magneto is was a villain for much of his Marvel "career" and only in recent years he's become this anti-hero.
