Ok, I can understand the mild aspects of sexism, but is it really worth it to kill Anita Sarkessian because of her opinions? Just look at the list of threats she gets: murder, bombings, shootings all because she has an valid, rational point about the misuse of female characters in popular media.

That's a banned topic so it can't really be discussed.

As much as I want to discuss it, there are some people here not mature enough to handle it.

Threatening to kill people because they point out your _____ and _____ is blatantly ____, is never a valid reason. ______ is the _______ of the _______.

Considering the discussions we do handle maturely I've never understood exactly why the topic is banned even within OTC.

But it is and that's that I think.

What topic is banned?

Any discussion of events and groups related to the #gamergate situation.

I don't think Sarkeesianchat is. Gamergate, however, has a large and highly active group of free-roaming trolls attached to it who the mods have been trying to avoid the attention of. We've had enough problems with weird MRA pilgrims showing up for some agenda-spreading as is.

If the fear is trolls turning up I'd suggest instituting a maturity rule. To be part of the discussion you have to have been known for X amount of time. Possibly even posting within OTC for X amount of time.

But yeah Sarkessian as an individual isn't a banned topic. But discussion of online harassment of her is, the same way that journalistic ethics aren't a banned topic, but journalistic ethics in relation to certain people is (or so I assume).

Edit: Sod it, I'm guessing here based of the information I have. I'm just gonna hollar and ask for a clear explanation of what discussion is and is not banned.

In that case I think journalism ethics in relation to who sleeps with whom is the least of our concerns compared to all the other many possible sources of bias and misinformation.

In the scope of sexism, is there anything more to say about Anita Sarkeesian and whomever is involved in that scheisskreig other than "Well that sucks and is unacceptable and really, no excuse for it", and in the scope of ethics journalism then is there anything more to say other than "Does it belong on this thread about sexism?"

A bit late, I know, but to answer @2909: Yes, GamerGate is a forbidden topic on TV Tropes. Not so much because trolls as much as because it is fairly impertinent to the purposes of a website about tropes and because it only generates stupidity and flaming.

As for Anita Sarkeesian, all the threads associated with her works ended up shut down for creating unmanageable problems, so I'd recommend the utmost carefulness and courtesy when discussing it.

I think the logic goes "there are no strong reasons to keep it, so, if there ever are strongs reasons to drop it, it will be dropped like a Yoshi◊"

I don't know about non-fictional examples, but the first fictional one, that came to my mind, is from Berserk. Griffith sleeps with Lord Gennon to get more money for his growing army and further advance his plan of becoming the next King of Midland.

Though, in the end, this incident wasn't completely exposed; Griffith killed Gennon before it could happen.

Gennon was, like, crazy into him, too.

Yeah, and that's the main difference when the character is male, I think. Gennon is not only homosexual but also a pedophile, and the setup is played as as creepy as possible. That and Griffith also has a great career already, he just wants to get even further.

Berserk has a problem with the All Gays Are Pedophiles trope in general.

Speaking of it... does anyone knows any piece of fiction that treats both male pedophiles and female pedophiles as equally creepy?

Same for the guys though, they are in makeup, shave chests and face (unless they are going for that look), etc.

Anyway... this is just sad. And I also had a personal experience with it in Jr High as I liked to play volleyball so I signed up for and well got laughed out and told to go play football instead, last time I ever thought of playing any kind of sports ever.
