Original VA's are planned to return.

Kazuya Tsurumaki is supervising, with Katsuyuki Motohiro directing, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto doing character designs, and Hideto Iwai writing.

According to Demarco, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (character designer, also responsible for Evangelion's character designs) and Kazuya Tsurumaki (director) is involved in a creative position in helping to write the story. So maybe this could end up being decent, although I'm not sure if I should be expecting anything from the animation, which was a BIG part of the original FLCL.

I dare say that animation is safe in the hands of Production I.G. Especially since they were part of the original FLCL Production Committee.

Kinda sounds like a retread of the original. I dunno how you get two seasons out of that, but...

It fucking sucks that Enokido (the original writer) isn't coming back. But from what I hear, he's a bit burned out?

Really, the only way they could've made a sequel work is to have it take place like, 15 years in the future when Naota's an adult, or focus on someone else. Honestly, I kinda hope he doesn't show up.

I know it's already a YMMV trope, but I was a bit surprised to find out that FLCL has an Esoteric Happy Ending. So much for the director wanting to cheer himself up after working on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

...Why does this sequel HAVE to exist? WHY?!?! Arrrghhhhhh fangiri RAGE!

I still want to know what happened to Mamimi. Naota and everyone else I was satisfied with, her, I wasn't.

With the original character designer, VA's, and possibly the Pillows all returning, and the original director (?) in a 'creative position', I don't know, glass half full, it could be a lot worse, with a new director promising he/she "loved the original, and wants to maintain its spirit" or some jazz.

Man, the reception to this news from TV Tropes compared to Twitter is like night and day.

• Hrh-hrm. Looks good. Was that Naota? Was that the girl with the glasses whose name I forget? Is this anime actually still happening, feels like it was announced a year ago, I'd almost thought it was abandoned. Is any of this real? Or did I slip into a coma from sheer excitement and end up in a world where the trailer was released?
• More giant robots and what looks like a white robot... maybe Atomsk in another form?
• Why is FLCL getting continuation? The original ended... I mean, when I was a kid it tripped me right the frack out because A) I wanted more episodes, and B) I wasn't used to such bizarre endings where a lot happened and was resolved but things still felt inconclusive. Naota still repeats his mantra from the beginning of the show, Mamimi just.. faded away someplace, who knows what happened to Naota's family or his brother, Haruko went off into space after Atomsk, and Eyebrows, well who cares about Eyebrows? Despite this sense of inconclusiveness, things were more or less wrapped up.
• Anyway, while I'm glad stuff like Samurai Jack and FLCL got sequels/conclusions... I'm curious what's left for this story to tell us. I guess we never did meet Naota's brother, and Mamimi's fate was kind of left up in the air.
  • If we're getting two sequels of FLCL hosted on Adult Swim, dubbed and ready to go, does this mean we might one day get that third season of Big O? -optimism intensifies-

  • I'm not sure how FLCL was originally animated so I don't know if there's just been a changing of software, or if there even really is a difference. Normally I'd criticize it for not being cel animation, but the original FLCL from what I just googled was supposedly done entirely digital, and the fight sequences were fantastic (moreso than a number of shows I've watched since). I don't really see any difference from this trailer or anything that looks "too moe." Characters look okay to me. Maybe the moe-ness will bug me on subsequent rewatches.

Honestly, if I were to point at something that feels off about the animation in the trailer, its that its too clean. My kid brother noticed it as well.

I'm just glad Toonami is strong enough that it can commission the production of entire anime again.

Is that really a problem?

It's not in the Uncanny Valley or anything.

The creator of those cat earphones you see is complaining on twitter that FLCL is supposedly ripping them off.

You'd think having your product appear in a popular show would be a good thing. People usually pay for that kind of advertising.

Because coincidences have never happened ever and there were never any cat headphones ever before that person made one set.

It's not like different forms of media have never used real life products in their stuff, even if it's changed up a little they're still referencing said product.

Also if this person can't stand other people copying her product, then maybe they shouldn't be in this game, because other companies are already making their own cat ear headphones. That's how the business works.

Production I.G. has agreed to credit Yuumei for the Axent Wear headphones in FLCL sequel.

I'm torn. Good for her, I suppose. But at the same time, cat ear headphones were a thing before she got her patent on them, and the ones in FLCL (which really, I found out of place for the style of the show) are not the same, though I suppose the addition of the LED lighting made it too similar.

Haruko sounds like an eccentric but helpful mentor who totally won't fuck over the cast for her own benefit.

I... don't know how to feel.

On one hand, more FLCL.

On the other hand, new protagonists, recycled lines, and an art style that looks kind of like everything else on Crunchyroll at the moment, whereas the original show had a look that felt very distinct for it's time.

On the other, other hand, more FLCL. And the Pillows seems to be coming back for it.

My feelings on it are simple.

"You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you never stopped to think if you should."

There is no point to an FLCL sequel, and without most of the original staff, but made by Williams Street, this is essentially FLCL fan fiction.
