I really don't think type 1 should be there at all. It's just Sweet Polly Oliver and not related to the trope "a female ruler gets a masculine title".
That is a subtrope Sister Trope or just related of that A girl can not lead so she hides her gender so she can lead. As well as there are many ways it can play it could be nobody knows, just family, every official or really everyone might know and it's just a formality.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Type 1 and type 2 can be split in two different tropes. Type 3 sounds close to type 2 subtype 4. We should merge type 2 and 3 and drop the numbered "variations". I don't see why a trope needs to be so overly complicated with all the types and subtypes.
I guess this is why they don't want numbered types. Maybe we could think of names for them?
Why seperate them at all?
All we have to do is to saying that there are several possible ways this trope plays and mention the "variations" as examples.
This numbering and splitting in variations never really works, most of the time a simple concept is overcomplicated by this and not every instance of a trope fits in some of the neat predifined types.
Agreed. You can easily transform "Types I-VII" or whatever into "one or more of the following reasons".
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!Bump.
So do we do away with the typing, and just list common variations while noting that they are just a sample that cannot be expected to cover all possible cases? For that matter, are we talking all of the types, or just the 4 types under "openly a woman, masculine title"? Because AFAIK, any one example would have to be only one of the top-level three variations at any point in time.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Eh. Every time we do away with a trope's definition in favor of "no specific significance, but it can take a number of forms," it drifts to much toward Not A Trope for my liking.
The definition isn't changing from "a woman who goes by a masculine title." The numbering can be taken away and the page rewritten. Something along the lines of, "When a woman rules as The High Queen or God Save Us from the Queen! it is rarely a matriarchy but the story wants to make it clear that she has all the authority as a man would have in her position. The best way to do that is by having her use a masculine title. She doesn't have to be disguised as a man but might be... Compare Princesses Rule.

The types could use some cleanup. Currently, examples are for 1, 2, 3, and "blended or other," and types are 1 through 4. Some things listed as type 2 appear to actually be type 4, but before I move anything, I want to determine whether we have too many types as it is. (In particular, 2 and 4 might be combined.)
