Well the other day I decided to rewatch Gundam Seed and in the first episode after the ship Mu La Flaga is on docks you see the captain take his hat off and it just floats there in mid-air and I thought wait a minute.... if that happened when he took it off how was he ever wearing it in the first place? any other weird things like that you can think of from any anime?

Seed is odd. Don't worry about it.

Some unusual things that pop up in anime, manga, and the like can be attributed to...

  • Anime Reality. Like many other categories of media, you should not expect absolute realism.

  • Unique aspects of Japanese culture. Some of the tropes listed in Useful Notes/Japan have been around for centuries, while others didn't exist until a few years or decades ago.

  • Audience expectations. If you didn't grow up with access to more than a few series — or all you had were the dubbed and thoroughly written versions — then you might not know what's possible. And if your expectations are based on shows from five or more years ago...

  • What's relatively mainstream? Sometimes it's difficult to say. The current Widget Series that's getting a lot of publicity might not be popular or influential. The Peepo Choo series talked about this phenomenon.

  • Author, editor, or audience? It's also tough to tell who's calling the shots in a given series. Maybe it's the original creators, or maybe it's their editor. Or perhaps the writers are just trying to appeal to the majority of their audience.

Anime is weird for three reasons:

  1. Japan is weird.
  2. Animation is weird.
  3. Combining the two creates a gestalt effect that multiplies rather than adds said weirdness.

Which is not to say I dislike anime. I don't. I simply must say that it is, quite simply, weird.

I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.

Guys, I have been wanting since forever to make an animation about an otherwise normal guy that for some reason ends up stuck in the tokio that exists exclusively in animeland, even before I knew of TV Tropes. It would be called "Pedro In Japan" and would explore, anime plot tropes, anime location tropes, anime character tropes and all that. Aliens, human robots, giant mecha, ordinary high school student, anime hair, and all those things that make stuff wierd/great.

However, I never managed to learn flash.

^^USA is weird too tongue Yet we don't see anybody calling western animation weird.(even though they really are... I mean, one of most darkest popular comic book characters is guy wearing bat suit :P)

I tried watching anime once.

I had to read a science textbook cover to cover to restore my faith in reality.

The obsessiveness of the fans is the weirdest thing. It's only a cartoon, after all.

@Jones: What does statement "Only a 'cartoon'" mean in this case? In the same way as "Mona Lisa is only a painting" or "Sport fans are freaking out too much about sport" or do you mean it in "Pfft, you are thinking too much" way?

@steve: How is anime in general worse than other media to cause you need science books?

Exactly the same as those things. None of them are worthy of obsession. However, anime fans tend to turn their obsession into a level of weird that even the most die-hard football nut would never get near.

@Jones: Football fans? You mean those guys that cause massive riots because of the outcome of matches and start religions around certain players?

...or did you mean American Football?

Until you get Ryan Giggs sex-cushions, anime is still weirder. The reason there are no anime riots is that otaku are too weedy to pick up bricks and throw them through windows.

What is this 'American football' of which you speak?

Other fans are crazy, but when anime fans are weird they are weird. Often in a really creepy way.

@Jones: I wouldn't say that's more weird, really. More like a different kind of weird.

And I don't know anything about American Football, really. It's just a thing that keeps coming up when I try to talk about football.

Nothing is that weird. So what if Japan has magical girls, and robots. America has a sponge that fries patties, a boy and his magical rubber talking dog, and lest we forget, Ren And Stimpy.

I discovered another noticable thing in seed in the first ep. (again) I noticed that Lieutenant Ramias somehow turns around and floats off without pushing off of anything while in the bridge early on despite people always doing that throughout the rest of the show.
