"Compare with Compelling Voice"

Yeah, I've done that, and I'm not seeing the difference. And on that page, all it says about the distinction is "Compare Yog Sothoth Says".

Do we need both of these? Or does this one just need a clearer description?

The descriptions imply that Compelling Voice is more of the simon says version, while Yog Sothoth Says is the one that could leave you counting all the sand on the beach... despite the play on simon says. Should probably be merged.

This reminds me of Cthulhu's Tux - someone wanted to name a trope after their favorite Eldritch Abomination, despite the fact that the Trope Namer is Not An Example.

The only difference is that this trope explicitly leads to your damnation despite being controlled. That seems like a pointless distinction. I say cut.

[up][up]I'm not sure even that distinguishes them; Compelling Voice includes examples of the power being used to create And I Must Scream situations ("Walk until your feet bleed"), which seems pretty much what YSS is talking about.

[up] Right, whatever distinction might in theory have existed has been lost. I think it would be hard to make a distinction; does Elam Sleazabaggo really go home and rethink his life?

Okay. From what I can gather, Compelling Voice is a power. Yog Sothoth Says is a situation.

It's when a character is under the influence of a compelling voice that forces them into a Fate Worse than Death.

That being said, the name doesn't lend itself to what the trope seems to be aobut.

[up] Like a ban, geas, or curse. Of course, that makes the trope namer an ambiguous case, since some or all of those commands may result in death. Meanwhile, many of the Compelling Voice examples would exeplify both tropes.

If my idea flies, then this trope will be a subtrope of Compelling Voice.

Even if it's about the situation (which I think is actually more along the lines of Brainwashed or Brainwashed and Crazy, depending on the circumstances), that doesn't change the fact that it's a terrible name. It's a very poor play on Simon Says, the trope is not at all clear from the name, and Yog Sothoth doesn't actually do what the trope describes.

You might as well call it Flying Spaghetti Monster Says, because that has just as much correlation between the name and the trope.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

Yes, no one has argued that the name is good.

The name is bad.

There is a question whether the Fate Worse than Death version warrants its own subtrope.

I don't have a problem with the name.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Is it worth creating a crowner for this? If so, er, how do you actually do that?

We should ignore the name for now and determine if the trope needs to exist in the first place. If we decide that it does, then we can decide whether to change the name or not.

I vote we cut the page. It is essentially identical to Compelling Voice, and all examples on this page can be merged into Compelling Voice, if they haven't been already.

So yeah, cut.

Given that this thing has inbounds, why put it on the cutlist instead of just turning it into a redirect to Compelling Voice?

[up]I think you can just do it, and then object to the request on the discussion page.

Too late. Already cut and locked.

I put in a request here that a moderator turn it into a redirect.
