I think Tragic Mulatto is the person being discriminated, while this one is the discrimination itself.

Half Breed is a slur, but it does fit the trope.

I also believe that this would be a supertrope to that in one of the rare instances of mixed trope type parentage (horrible monsters that they are). Well, I suppose you could have Tragic Mulatto without the actual prejudice being present if it's all in the characters head. Also, you can have one faction be prejudiced and the other side not.

Fight smart, not fair.

Tragic Mulatto is a pretty poor name for say, a half-elf. Mullato has specific meaning that doesn't really apply outside of black-white human mixture.

[up]I don't believe all our examples for Magical Negro are black (though, admittedly, most of them are).

What's precedent ever done for us?

OK, does someone have a writeup of the Half-Breed trope here? About something that is biracial?

Wait, so we're still going to be using "Half Breed" to talk about characters with mixed heritage? Is that what was decided?

They decided on discrimination appended to the end. I'm not exactly thrilled, but...

I think we were aiming for a Mixed Ancestry supertrope as well.

OK, since this wasn't happening, I've gone ahead and split the page and added an index to Half-Breed. Now, there are four things to do:

  • Verify if I split Half-Breed correctly
  • Verify that the index I put on Half-Breed is consistent
  • Make a better description for Half-Breed
  • Split the wicks.

[up]The whole problem here is that Half-Breed is a racial slur. That's OK-ish for Half-Breed Discrimination, but for our main index? Hell no.

How about Mixed Ancestry instead?

So the current state of affairs is that Half-Breed is the supertrope, and both Half-Breed Discrimination and Tragic Mulatto are subtropes. My opinion is that Half-Breed Discrimination and Tragic Mulatto are redundant. Reading the descriptions, I can see only two minor differences: the But Not Too Black implications of Tragic Mulatto, note  and the fact that Half-Breed Discrimination need not come from both sides. I don't see us needing two separate tropes for that.

The supertrope needs to be renamed, if only for the fact that it now encompasses people who aren't strictly half-and-half, like Heinz Hybrids. I like Mixed Ancestry.

Dang, it, too late, but I would have suggested Hated Half Breed for the alliteration.

Ok, so do we need a new crowner: Rename Half-Breed / Merge Tragic Mulatto into Half-Breed Discrimination?

Another bump, again for votes.

Silverfire's case for renaming Half-Breed sounds more convincing, though, if a bit nit-picky.

Tragic Mulatto is an actual term, and is a subtrope. I don't think it should be merged.

So, remind me, what are the reasons for not renaming Half-Breed? I mean, it's a racial slur that needlessly narrows the supertrope. Help me out here.

I've changed my vote on Half-Breed, due to Silverfire's points.

I also agree it is not such a good name, due to being a slur.

Seems like I'm late to the party, but it does seem quite ridiculous to have a supertrope named for a slur and then specifically calling itself out on it in the opening description. Agreed that it's fine for Half-Breed Discrimination, but the Unfortunate Implications is just unnecessary.
