All-Purpose Namespace Icon Thread: Sandbox.Namespace Icons

Go To

This thread deals with all issues concerning the icons used for namespaces and their buttons, including proposals for icons for new namespaces and bugs with existing icons.

When submitting an icon, the icon images should be exactly 16x16 png with a transparent background. A gif can also be used, but png is usually better. Also, the naming convention is important. It should be the namespace in lowercase.

I am compiling a list of namespaces that need icons, and icons for those name spaces. This would be preferred to be done quickly because I've convinced Eddie to hook them up when I get them complied. I will be editing the OP as we go.

NOTE: Use the link to the sandbox in the thread title to see what still needs to be decided on.

Subpages that still need icons:

  • Animation/
  • FanWorks/
  • Manhua/
  • Sandbox/
  • Timeline/

Subpages that already have icons hooked up (please note, this list has been collapsed into a note, so that the floating header post isn't huge)

Links to installation-ready icons here and forward.

Maybe something like this:

That'd have to be shrunk quite a bit.

Also, Wallbangers/ did have an icon - Eddie pulled it here.

[up] Yeah, based on that I'm not seeing an icon for Wallbangers ever being approved.

Yeah it was more of a spur of the moment deal...Much like how I had the Idea for a "And the Fandom Rejoiced" button...Only to realize "What would it look like? Bisons Big Yes? Reaction guys?" Then I just stopped thinking about it.

And even then Bison and Reaction guys would suffer a quality drop once shrunk.

So I guess the question is what fit better then Bison or Reaction Guys?

You can edit your posts, y'know, no need to quadruple post.

I don't know if And The Fandom Rejoiced necessarily warrants an icon. I dunno, it has gotten awfully big for a trope... maybe it does? If it does, I was thinking fireworks, confetti, streamers, that kind of thing.

Eddie seems to have missed our previous listing of newly approved/cleaned icons, by the way.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I think What Could Have Been should have an icon. There's multiple tv shows, video games, etc than have there's own pages for this, so I think it would be worth making an icon for it.

Blargh. This is why I'm not a fan of giving tropes icons, with the possible exception of the Moments pages (which I'm not entirely sure should exist). What Could Have Been needs to get in line behind (deep breath):

All these have more pages in their respective namespaces than What Could Have Been's 29, according to this note . We almost might as well give an icon to every trope on the wiki at that point, certainly all the Tropes Of Legend.

In my opinion, icons should be limited to these namespaces who have routinely work-specific (as opposed to medium- or franchise-specific) subpages.

[up] I tend to agree; trying to put icons to all these different tropes sounds like overkill, plus I have no idea how we'd encapsulate many of them in a 16x16 icon. It's bad enough trying to do page pics for some of them.

I understand what Morgan Wick is saying. However, there's still the problem of accessibility. In the old way of getting to different trope pages, it was easy to see how many trope pages a given tv show (for example) had. But now that we go to those pages through the icons, certain pages that don't have icons (like What Could Have Been)won't be viewed as much because people will have no idea that they are there if they didn't already have prior knowledge of them. And typing in the trope page name in the url is unnecessary work. Also, not all tropes need icons. Only ones that bring you to a completely new page do. Granted, that's still alot of icons that need to be made, but it's not an unreasonable amount as it would be if every single trope really did need an icon.

You have the dropdown just above the row of icons.

[up] I looked at the row of icons for about five minutes before I found out what you were talking about, but that's probably because I'm dumb. Still, I feel like as long as there's a page devoted to a trope then it should have an icon. Maybe it's just me, but I think that the subpages bar is overshadowed by the icons anyways, so people might not notice it.

Move it to the end of the row of icons, then, labeling it "All Subpages" or "Other Subpages".

There are 20,000+ tropes. No way are we doing icons for all of them.

Even just the ones with subpages is going to be a couple hundred. It's a massive amount of time and effort for no real benefit.

Once Eddie gets around to install the icons listed here forward.

Methinks I'll need to bump this - I've been answering a few too many complaints on discussion pages that the icons for Playing With are missing.

Just for shiggles I did up a quick idea for both Art and Myth, two potential namespaces under discussion.

Ehhhh...not really sussed on the one for Myth, if I didn't know that was what it was, I'd say it was an empty thread spool. Maybe a winged foot?
