We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list
of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.

We can't remove heralds from the system. The only way to do that to find someone to take your place and no one has volunteered yet.

Though, is there like. A limit or contingency or something for, if, say, a herald becomes inactive due to unforeseen circumstances?
(Such as, say, month long power-outage or loss of Internet access or computer breaking down?)

Well, as long you going to be inactive for over a year or something, it will probably be fine. Most people don't ask questions if they reply at all so I wouldn't worry about that. If it's really urgent, they will find a way to contact others.

Apparently someone spotted a small issue with the Image Pickin' herald message and brought it up in "bugs".
Specifically there's two accidental wiki words: GI Fs and P Ms.
I assume that would be a mod-level fix rather than an admin-level one?

Alright, I finally finished my Short-Term Herald first draft. I built off Brainulator's greeting, but changed some things both to clarify, as well as to sound more like something I would write. How's it look?
Hello, [[troper]], and welcome to Projects: Short Term! Like Long-Term Projects, this forum is intended for cleaning up both the wiki in general and specific pages here. Unlike Long-Term, most projects here are expected to have a definitive end, and we also do a lot of franchise and work cleanups here. We have numerous topics, each with its own thread, so you're pretty likely to find at least one project that interests you. However, if you're planning to contribute to any of these projects, you need to first know how this forum works. Beyond the general forum rules, there are some specific guidelines you need to follow to contribute to these projects:
- Consensus is key. These threads only work if everyone is willing to cooperate, even if they disagree with each other. Be civil, and be willing to join in on a discussion. The more hands the better, and people are always looking for advice or consensus, so don't be the person who won't listen to others. And don't pick fights, even if you strongly disagree with someone or something. If you see a troper or tropers creating problems, report the situation either by hitting the Holler button or by posting in Ask The Tropers.
- Try not to lose your temper, and let the mods handle it. Remember that everyone here is trying to work. If you're more interested in chatting, goofing around, or other off-topic stuff than you are pitching in, this isn't the forum for you. We want to keep things relaxed and breezy even while doing cleanup, but derailing threads or failing to contribute in any kind of meaningful manner will only create problems. Stay on topic, stay focused on the thread's goal, and keep the unrelated chatter to a minimum. Some threads may have their own rules, which are always posted at the top of each page (and should themselves be followed), but these general rules are what you need to know in order to work on this forum.
- Finally, if you want to join a thread that isn't very active, don't be afraid to give it a little bump; as long as your new post is contributing to the project or bringing the project back to life, we aren't as concerned about necro-posting.
That said, this forum isn't all rules and work; as long as you keep a cool head and stay on task, you can still joke around and have fun, too. Believe me, everything goes a lot smoother with some levity.
Please note that this forum does not concern itself with changing trope definitions, changing images, or cleaning up tropes. For those sort of things, check out the Trope Repair Shop, Image Pickin', and our sister forum, Projects: Long Term/Perpetual, respectively. For discussing wiki policy, you want Wiki Talk; and for discussing the meaning and scope of various tropes, you want Trope Talk. It's best to keep these sort of subjects out of the cleanup threads—as they can derail cleanup efforts.

While I'm currently taking an indefinite break from mod work (along with most of my current activity on the site being lurking), updating the header to list the forums that need new heralds and updating Macron and Parable's herald messages to change "contact me or another one of the mods" to "contact me or one of the mods" (not necessarily worded exactly that way, but still meaning the same thing) due to their resignations from the mod team (I didn't change any other parts of their messages, and I won't do that without their permission) was a simple enough task that I went ahead and did it since folks have been left hanging for a little over a week.

I'm likely to be increasingly active on Tabletop Games, so if it still needs a herald and there's no other volunteer, I'm happy to do double-duty.
Maybe we should work out something official for sandwich posting on the FG rules thread just to make things clear but that's another matter.
