We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

Arha is set up for Content Violations.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThank you for setting that up. I assume the badge will show up later.
Alright, the forum games draft needs a bit of lookover for possible spelling errors and it'll be ready to go.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerRequesting an edit to my PM following a minor thread title change. Pinned thread section, fourth bullet:
- Unlock a Page — Post here if there's a Locked Page you think doesn't need that protection or a cut page to be restored. If you're asking about a cut work page, check this list to see if that cut was for being porn/having pedophilia. If a non-cut page doesn't get unlocked, the mods can edit it for you upon request here.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. One question: Is it good to set up a Wiki page for the herald system, as it was done for the badges?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI've realised I actually want more than one edit. Thanks in advance; I wish it was possible for heralds to edit their own messages.
First section, second thread: Please change initial link text to to "Content Policy Directory".
Second section, first bullet: Delete altogether; irrelevant and I want to reduce length where possible.
Second bullet: Change thread link to "this thread" following the slight shuffle in CVD.
Why would that be necessary? The OP contains everything relevant and I can't see how it would complement it, unless there's something you feel needs public editing ability.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I expect heralds can't edit their messages because it would leave them vulnerable to Blixty style freakouts. Maybe in the future we'll get a system whereby the heralds can edit their messages pending mod approval. So the mods would just have to press one button to take the changes live.
Fresh-eyed movie blogThe Badges thread has a similar OP but it still has a wiki page. Plus, these things are usually better when displayed both on the wiki and the forums, so that non-forumgoers (or not-yet-goers) can see it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMaybe we should add a new section to the Know The Staff page listing the heralds and what areas they cover.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I think it was suggested already some times and went nowhere.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanNah, we do not need a separate page. The heralds are under TV Tropes Forum.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIf so it'd list the P5 too. Personally, I'd rather not be on Know T He Staff, though. Heralds are on the TV Tropes Forum page already.
The Badge Shop is good, but I don't think we need a similar thing here. It's just drafts and occassionally feedback, and I don't see why a wiki-only troper would be interested.
Ninja'd.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.By the way, I noticed that Arha's message is like this:
- Finally, the P5 forum is not a soapbox. We are not interested in discussing the policy, which has been debated thoroughly. Please leave your opinions at the door.
Given that the new thread seems to allow this sort of discussion, wouldn't it be better this way?:
- Finally, the P5 forum is not a soapbox. We are not interested in using the policy as a vehicle to advance your morals on pedophilia, porn etc., which has been debated thoroughly. Please leave your opinions at the door.
Assuming that we have permissions to suggest improvements to other's PMs.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat thread is for mostly minor issues. What he means is not to gripe about the changes in the content policy.
"Polite life will fill you full of cancer." - Iggy Pop "I've seen the future, brother, it is murder." -Leonard CohenTelcontar, I made some changes, but I can't figure out which part you want deleted altogether.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThanks for making the other changes. I'd like this bullet removed as it's not really relevant:
- Trope Talk, as you may have guessed, is where threads about specific tropes or how they relate to stories/characters go. If you're looking for a trope and can't remember the title, that's a query for Lost And Found.
Alright. Also took the liberty of excising the part about the invoked markup, since the thread is unpinned.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerConcerning my PM, should the Bugs thread be added to it? I don't think it's in the right place (Tech Wishlist & Bug Reports seems to be more suited to that job as a lot of threads could be avoided by reading it) but if it stays it should probably be added.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanLu has kindly moved the Banners thread to SE (it may not be the only thread that ends up going there), so the sentence "To help with long-term/common queries or requests, there are currently eight stickied threads." in my PM needs updating to six stickied threads rather than eight. The following bullet also needs removing:
7. Pages Needing Banners — Some tropes are subjective, so they have a banner like the one on this page to remind people that not everyone agrees. This thread discusses tropes that should be marked in this way.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Updated Telcontar.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerCan we get word on the time-table for updating the auto-PM tool to respond to created threads? I've gotten a few people starting threads to promote their own work (or at the very least, that's what it looks like), with them not knowing I kind of have a rule telling them there's a specific thread to take that sort of thing to.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I almost wonder if the PM should be visible before someone hits "send", but I don't know if it's even possible.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat's put me thinking of an extension to the OTC thread quarantine, where someone who has never posted in a forum who launches a new thread receives the Herald message and has their thread sit in purgatory until a mod approves it.
Fresh-eyed movie blogSomething like that would probably be useful for content violations since anyone who is going to break the rules accidentally or otherwise there is going to do it on their first post. Doesn't sound particularly practical, however.
That draft needs a bit of proofreading.
