I'd say most of the regional governors were only too happy to exchange their leadership privileges for a safe and comfortable retirement. I'm more concerned about the downsizing itself. You don't have to live in a post-soc nation to know just what happens when a ton of military servicemen get on the dole... and it doesn't help either. So, another egg in the "sounds good, doesn't work" basket.
For that matter, I'm trying to picture how the galaxy would work if the post-Imperial warlords got big enough to declare their own factions, never mind all Hell breaking loose in Hutt space. Kinda like how after the USSR disbanded, the US found itself fighting terrorists of every shape and color. As James Woolsey put it, they've slain a dragon, only to find themselves in a jungle full of snakes.
Maybe it counts as pro-fascist apologia because it is pro-fascist apologia and people have repeatedly expressed a desire for it to stop and have hollered the moderators to make it stop? Just drop this topic, dude, a lot of people want it to stop already.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Yes, a military made up of squishy humans with handguns would have been a fantastic defense against a faster-than-light death laser made from a sun.
You guys should be military planners.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youThe laser itself was blown up by squishy humans with tiny starfighters. Point is, if there were a bit more of said humans patrolling the galaxy, they likely could have found it faster, and prevented it from firing in the first place.
... I don't think you know how big a galaxy is.
Plus, you just proved my point. A couple dozen fighters was all that was needed in terms of a military operation against this battlestation. Why on earth are you trying to build an army of billions again?

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youHaving a larger fleet, spread out, with bases and admirals spread across the Galaxy, and a group of designated survivors in the Senate, who spend one year attending session via hologram before switching off with another cadre of senators, and each senator being elected with a deputy in case any of them is incapacitated or killed, seems like a good plan. It keeps resources diffuse and a contingency plan for a crisis. The Republic's elder generation witnessed Alderaan — they should have at least considered the possibility of it happening again.
To your second point, because the battlestation isn't the only thing the First Order has.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."You do realize that intel on unconfirmed locations is more efficiently bought off freighters and explorers than having dedicated military personnel hunting for it, right? Because those people are already out there exploring and you don't have to have them on a dedicated salary to go out and spend 99% of their time not actually finding anything. A Galaxy is mostly empty space.
That's a good point about holograms. We've witnessed the Jedi council convene via hologram; I wonder why the senate doesn't do the same...

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youIt's not just about them never discovering SKB — they deliberately made it so their capital world is irreplaceable. That's completely daft since the NR government and command was designed to be mobile. The fleet should have been dispersed if it wasn't needed at the capital. Resources should be diffusely concentrated, such that a decapitation strike doesn't become a total defeat in one stroke.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."So uh anyone else reading the current Darth Vader comic?
Cause its pretty fun. The arts great & all leading to some nice visually stand-out moments.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I misunderstood. I thought you were also in favor of mass militarization.
You're right on the dispersal, of course. That's mostly what saved the US fleet in WWII: the Aircraft carriers that won the Pacific were all out on excercise and were spared the fate of the battleships and destroyers that got sunk at PH.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youIt's also somewhat pointless, since everybody knows where the Republic is. And it's easier to set up assassinations since once you know where they're headed, you just get someone out there before they get there and suddenly YOU have home court advantage.
They should just convene aboard ships in space. Or via hologram.
I suppose holograms can be faked, can't they? A rogue agent patches themselves in to the communication and sabotages the original connection.
Changes a few crucial senatorial votes.
Dictate galactic legislation from the shadows.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youYou know if there's one thing I'm interested in is the history behind Starkiller base,it's possible the first order built all of it,on the other hand it could be something previously built under the galactic empire but reclaimed by them.
New theme music also a boxI think they must have built most of it themselves using Imperial engineers and abducted folks. The empire didn't have the tech to build that kind of system, although the research that went into designing the death star probably contributed to the construction of Starkiller Base.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youWouldn't surprise me if the First Order actually stole the technology from someone through espionage
New theme music also a boxIf they make a movie of that, would it be reverse-Rogue One?
Please don't give Disney any ideas.
a Mission impossible styled film where agents of the First Order steal classified plans from Coruscant involving high speed chases and illegal pod racing,it would be hugely profitable and would be instant box office success
You hear that Disney?
New theme music also a boxSounds like what 1313 could have been.
Remember, Rakata Prime is within First Order territory and the SKB did work suspiciously like the Star Forge. There's a chance it was worked on during the Empire, with the First Order taking over after the Contingecy was activated.
In regards to Imperial spies and such, real life can sometimes be stranger than fiction.

but HOW?I mean it's been known that JJ Abrams is partially based on Hugh Hefner.
"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."
The Imperial collapse is fine and all but those Imperial Governors are the issue. Everything in the series had made them out to be ambitious and rather power hungry in their politics, they would not have just folded cause the Emperor was gone, they would have factionalized and had more than enough resources to withstand the rebellion if not try and take it on themselves.
It would have taken years to root out all the Governors and potentially those power hungry enough to replace them, but nope everything landed on the republic's doorstep without a fight.
The Republic itself should have had more than enough warhawks after all the atrocities and still occupied planets to keep a good military and fighting them... instead of downsizing to non-existance and doing nothing to fight/root out imperials. Israel and Germany Post WW 2 really should have been the models of a post empire world.
