The Handle: Curious, which passages did you think fell into that trope? Littlepip often opened chapters with a bit of philosophical thought, but for it to qualify as Fauxlosophical Narration, it would have to both add nothing and be insignificantly related to the general plot and/or content of the preceding or proceeding chapters. I'm hard-pressed to recall any instance where that is the case. Each such pause for reflection was directly tied to plot, subplot or immediate events in a way that illuminated or foreshadowed.

I'll admit that I'm abusing the term. I'll also admit that I quite enjoyed those parts back when I read them. But we don't have a trope name for "Philosophical Musings that, though interesting and relevant, could stand to be a bit more concise". Of course, the danger of being too Laconic is that it becomes simply another form of communicating badly, as I've proven here.

Certainly, FOE could stand to be less verbose. Looking back, I can hardly believe I read all of that, willingly and happily (though I did get impatient at the frankly gruelling fighting scenes, which is a problem that's native to the game anyway). Victor Hugo would be proud, for better or for worse.

Question to Kkat, do you know Crossed? How would you compare FOE Raiders to Crossed?

I wouldn't use the term Fauxlosophic Narration (I generally don't like to lean too heavily on TV Tropes terminology to begin with, but that's beside the point). I think it's more accurate and fair to simply say that Littlepip monologues too much. It's not that it isn't relevant, it's just it gets overbearing and kinda sloggy.

Murky Number Seven, a story which I love to pieces, is also guilty of this. Every chapter begins with Murky giving a monologue to the pony interviewing him, which is pretty obviously Homage. Are the monologues irrelevant? No, and that's not the important question. The important question is "is it necessary?" I don't think that Littlepip's monologues and pondering to the audience were necessary to the degree that they were present.

People generally tend to think of Show, Don't Tell as meaning "describe and write out things, rather than just telling the audience what happens," but I think a more useful way of thinking about it is "Let the events in the story speak for themselves." Take two contrasting examples from Fallout: Equestria. The first is in chapter 18 or something, they're walking along, mutated beasts attack, and Velvet grabs a shotgun and starts shooting. Littlepip has a bit of inner thought she shares with the audience to the tune of "See how this ties into my conversation with Monterey Jack from earlier." Not irrelevant by any means, but pretty superfluous. By comparison, the scene in chapter 36 or 37 (again, I forget which) where SteelHooves arrives at the place where he "died." It's quiet, poignant, and all the stronger because Littlepip refrains from comment and allows the scene to just sink in for the audience.

You think? I dunno, this line from Ch. 13 has always given me pause:

“Huh? Oh...look, don't worry about it, we're not in any rush. We're going to be around one another a long time now, remember? Plenty of opportunity to go at your own pace.”

Speaking of Murky, are you caught up yet?

To my great surprise, I got a review saying that my abandoned FOE fic was awesome, and I should continue it. So post-Na No I may consider it.

I haven't followed the story in a long time, good possibility I won't, it just moved to slow and way too much damn rambling narration. It's excellently written, but I think it's in just as much need of an editor as the original.

Original was fine, maybe a few places things could be touched up, but really couldn't lose anything much without vastly effecting the story. Murky... just waiting to make sure it's not a Downer Ending and that reading through all the stuff he goes through will be worth it.

Also need to get back to Memories, sorry for not doing so lately, combination of getting sick, long ass hours at work in very bad times to do anything, AND several other fics I comment on updating.

@Unknownlight I called it Unburied. It was my Na No Wri Mo project last year that ended up being abandoned after my nephew flooded by hard drive with koolaid. I can't get on fimfic from work, or I'd provide a link.

I'm not saying don't read it, but unless I feel particularly inspired next year while on deployment, it's not being continued anytime soon.

I'm uncultured. My biggest reaction from the poem was that it didn't rhyme.
