Dark matter is of course a real thriller. You wanna know the theory with most supporters in the scientific community? "Fuck if I know."

I love it that we know so much while also knowing how very, very much there is that we don't know.

And then there is the effect of weather conditions on human behaviour. You know, things like full moon and wind from the mountains causing insanity.

If there' something we know about insanity in our species, it's that it's exceptionally easy to make us crazy - or so you would think, looking at all the evidence to support that claim, but then you can also look at the kinds of stuff that people can go through without losing their mind, and nothing makes sense again. Unless, of course, the really resilient types are already insane to start with.

There is a saying (a bit of a Take That! to modern psychology) that there are no sane, only those not diagnosed. cool

This one's interesting.

Doing this on advice of M84:

Basically, there's been a missing persons case in the 1990s when two 19-year olds were going to an abandoned spa in Ozu (Owner is still alive and pissed that the former place is turned into a hotbed of ghost rumors) to see if they can go there without getting scared since the place is rumored to be connected to the paranormal.

They and their car were not found.

Theories suggests that they were actually spirited away, yakuzas/bosozokus/other criminal elements killed them for stumbling on their activities, their car crashed into a valley, deep place or North Korean agents (or contractors) lured them to a trap.

Just a reminder that you shouldn't drop urls without some context. The url itself tells us very little.

Edit: Much appreciated, thanks.

Damn. Sorry.

Old habit.

I'll post one more unsolved mystery to share later on. Wanna get some interests from peeps on this, especially to those who want to look at the case from a supernatural angle.

I'm a skeptical agnostic/atheist, so naturally I don't believe in anything paranormal/supernatural. Nevertheless, I still find stories from people who have allegedly witnessed some weird paranormal phenomena to be very interesting for some reason. I dunno why, I guess I just like to imagine that we don't know everything about the world around us, and there may be some strange things out there that we can't explain with any certainty. Even though it's far more likely than not, that there's perfectly sane, rational (if boring) explanations that are much more convincing than crazy-ass bullshit like "OMG, it was ghosts/demons/aliens!".

I'm especially fascinated by UFO sightings and alleged encounters with extraterrestrials; like the stories of people claiming to have suffered an Alien Abduction. Though of course, they're most likely either making up bullshit lies, or suffering from some sort of mental illness. Or experiencing some weird dreams and/or hallucinations (i.e. sleep paralysis).

But still, many of these crazy folks are genuinely convinced that they experienced something otherworldly, so I sometimes like to entertain the thought, "What if they were telling the truth?" If nothing else, these tales would at least make for some decently entertaining works of science fiction.

For example, these sorts of dubious anecdotes made by crazy people on the Internet.

[up] I am the same, except more like Agent Scully. There's always going to be a rational, scientific explanation behind those phenomenons even if you never find out what.

It doesn't make any sense that these UF Os would present themselves to specific people over a period of 100+ years and never have been discovered by the scientific community. Or that ghosts would choose to stay only in "haunted" places and not be seen or heard more often.

Life is unfair...

Regarding the thread title, I was thinking the Dyatlov Pass incident.

UFO is always an interesting term because it doesn’t really imply extraterrestrials at all. It just means something is flying around and observers can’t tell what it is, and our skies are full of stuff that fits that bill while still having decidedly earthly origins. Technically any aircraft that can’t be positively identified is a UFO, there have even been cases where airliners were temporarily UF Os because some of their electronics were down.

On a more conspiracy-minded note, the US military received $81 million in “black budget” funding this year and a very large portion of that goes towards secretive aircraft. There’s definitely stuff out there, it’s just not aliens.

They should have sent a poet.

I'll leave the Tsubono spa mystery in my previous post here.

Though this time, I'm leaving this mystery to those who like Japanese LE mysteries. This reddit post is from the Setagaya homicide case in 2000 where a family of four was killed on December 30, 2000.

A memorial ceremony is held by the MPD at the same house (outside) where they got killed. It's considered an active case even if they don't have new clues aside from them crime journalists who go own their own.

At the time, it's considered to be as creepy and scary as fuck.

Hope we can get some discussions going about this.

@Grafite: Yeah I agree. It's too convenient that every single alleged sighting of a "ghost" or "alien" or whatever never leaves behind any real physical evidence, it's always from the word of mouth of some random nobody who lives in or was visiting some remote location in the middle of nowhere.

And photos of UFOs are nearly always very blurry and low-quality. Not to mention that terrestrial aircraft and celestial objects will always be more believable culprits than "alien spaceships", yet some people are automatically convinced that any bright lights in the night sky have to be something weird.

Speaking of which, it seems like at least 90% of these paranormal stories just happen to occur at nighttime. Doubly so if someone alleges that something happened in their bedroom, it becomes too obvious that they were just having a really weird dream or hallucination.

Just a warning though. Watching the video on the Setagaya case may give you the goosebumps.

I'm reminded of something I read a long time ago: some isolated town in the American southwest would report hearing explosions up in the nearby mountains. It would happen regularly every year, but only for a few days during the summer.

Somebody finally went up into the mountains to investigate. It turned out that a small airplane had crashed up there years ago. Sunlight reflecting off its windows into a nearby cave would ignite the volatile gasses that seeped out of the ground and built up inside the cave. This would only happen when the sun was in the right position in the sky during the summer.

The solution? Smash the plane's windows. No more explosions.

The creepiest unsolved mystery is the Late Bronze Age Collapse, and the Sea People who caused it. Who were they? Where did they come from? What happened to them and why is there nothing remaining of them? Did they even exist or did the Late Bronze Age Collapse involve something worse? Something set back Western culture by centuries and we know almost nothing about it

This thread looks like it'll be very good inspiration for stuff in my books to have a "this is what happened via the magic side" explanation.

Though some of it will have even the villains who usually undertake this sort of stuff baffled.

For example, Matt and co. think Magic God Odin is responsible for the disappearance of the sailors of the Marie Celeste...and when they bring this forward, Odin is baffled and says he was one of those who investigated, and the most he could discover was "something weird happened onboard. Mana flared up and then went dead."

The Setagaya family sounds like Japans version of In Cold Blood. Its really not that intense by American standards, but it is kinda creepy.

It is. It's also unprecendented that such a home invasion massacre happened in the history of Japanese law enforcement.

It's uncomfortable, but the mystery surrounding it makes it interesting to follow.

For a more scientific type os strange mystery, I give you STEVE, a bright, night time atmospheric phenomenon that scientists cannot explain. All they know so far is that they have nothing to do with auroras.

Here's this vid of a deserted tunnel.

Pay attention closely with the audio. You can hear someone say "atsui", despite only having two people present in the video.

I'm into monsters and cryptozoology primarily. Anyone hear any good reports about someone getting lost in areas with a high volume of bigfoot sightings? Or hey, what about hat Chicago Batman? I never heard any conclusion to that little story arc.

@RJ-19-CLOVIS-93 I'll admit it is weird that a major societal collapse happened, but barely any concrete facts exist about it. When I first heard about I thought the Sea People were actual fish men from Ryleh or whatever. But I doubt it was anything so interesting. Also, if you really don't know they were coastal dwelling tribes that one day got the bright idea to start attacking everybody else. And it wasn't like it affected everyone on Earth, just the Mediterranean.
