The nuclear programme of Iran

Iran will not develop nuclear weapons due to this agreement, but there are plans for a bipartisan bill that could force guidelines for a final agreement to be made.

I'm pretty sure that statistically speaking, the chance of it happening is extremely close to a 1, (which means it's a certainty, for anyone out there who hasn't been made to suffer through a Statistics class) and I doubt you'll find anyone willing to bet against it.

I wish enough of my countrymen didn't believe that, that we would stop electing people who believe that. This is the political equivalent of Batman versus Superman.

We should make elections happen a year in advance and make the winners attend classes on law and parliamentary procedure while they wait to take their seat.

And it should be taught by Shields and Brooks.

Apparently an outline agreement has been reached between Iran and the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany. It's "an outline agreement" and "A comprehensive nuclear accord [will] be drafted by 30 June".[1]

I hope this will be a good thing. Now we just need to wait a few years or so and see.

According to a US factsheet issued after the talks, the outline deal includes the following conditions:

Iran will reduce its installed centrifuges - used to enrich uranium - by two-thirds and reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium

The centrifuges that are no longer in use will be placed in storage, monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

All of Iran's nuclear facilities will be subject to regular IAEA inspections

Iran will redesign its heavy-water reactor in Arak so that it cannot produce weapons-grade plutonium

US and EU sanctions related to Iran's nuclear programme will be lifted in phases, but can be brought back if Iran does not meet its obligations.

Seems like a pretty good deal,if Iran keeps the terms, or if Congress,Israel,or the Sunni states don't jump the gun and do something stupid.

The Saudi's have been willing to give the diplomatic solution a try so I don't see them doing anything (especially as conventional retaliation is likely to have them as the first target), the US congress and Israeli government though... No bet.

Let's hope the Dems win all three houses (Sen, Con, and White).

Well, peaceful resolution, decent guys in power in Iran, this should all work out good. 3 cheers for international agreements actually working!

You know I've never though of it that way before...

The Senate isn't a house technically, it's a chamber I believe. Only the House of Representative and the White House are houses.

I thought that after I posted it, but it's a novel way to think about it nonetheless.

My only concern with that plan is He Who Fights Monsters and Evil Is Not a Toy. Because if there's one thing we've learned it's that entrenchment doesn't do a party any favors. Free seats= morons in those seats.

Thing is, this isn't a battle of good and evil in a TV show, it's politics. The people would be far better served with the problems being fixed rather than abused for the cause we currently see as the right one.

(Posting Iran-related question here for now; if there's another thread better suited, direct me there and I'll thump this one)

Were the rumors of Khamenei's impending demise ever substantiated? Related to that, at this time has any indication been given as to who his successor may potentially be if he does pass away?
