Reviving this conversation. I'll read the thread later, but this is my preexisting opinion about the trope; I believe it should be renamed, on account of covering more hair colors than blue and blue (or purple) sometimes being a stand-in for black. Handily, it already has a couple alternate names that could take over. That opinion has probably already been noted or pooh-poohed, but it's mine at this moment.

and blue (or purple) sometimes being a stand-in for black.
"Blue as metaphor for black hair" is a separate thing from "Artistic License hair color". One is just a visual convention, the other actually exists in-universe.

[up] The two is really hard to tell the difference sometimes, one is a conventional substitute for issues of Black Hair in Black lined animation the other is Rule of Cool Distinctive Appearances and sometimes real meaning in a work... rarely the same shade is used for both.

Both are called Blue Hair.... Separating the two and making them distinctive would be a plus. Emphasizing this is You Gotta Have Colorful Hair more and Black Hair Stand In (which is currently has bits and pieces in with Purple Is the New Black.) would be really good. Renaming to You Gotta Have Colorful Hair would be a big help as well as stop the literal examples.

I can think of more than a few that use Dark Blue, Dark Purple, Shiny Midnight Black or even an off gray instead of Black.

[up][up] & [up]: "blue as a stand-in for black" is already covered by Hair Color Dissonance. I'm going to crosslink the two so people can find them.

[up] That trope is not quite what I was talking about. the examples are a mess and can't seem to decide what the trope wants to be from reading them.... hair different from the line art and sprite and portrait differences yada.

What I was talking about is their color was always just a little bit of an off color so the black lines around the person don't bleed into the hair when animated. The hair is very dark with just a tiny bit of Blue, Gray or Purple.

The pic on Hair Colors has more than a few examples there of hair tinted just a little bit like that.

[up] I think that would be Hair Color Dissonance. If the hair is drawn as dark purple for convenience in animation, but is treated as black by the other characters, that's exactly what Hair Color Dissonance is supposed to cover.

[up] How do you get "treated as black by other characters"? Hair color is rarely brought up and every color is natural unless directly stated to be dyed in any Anime period anything else is Fan Wank. (The only ones who dye in works are Japanese Delinquents and that is blonde.)

Animes get this colorful and it's all natural. (With a few Power Dyes Your Hair a brighter shade of whatever it was before.)

[up] Yes, but (for example) there are characters who have "naturally blue" hair, and then there are characters who are drawn with blue hair, but in-universe it's referred to as black. The former would be You Gotta Have Blue Hair whereas the latter would be Hair Color Dissonance. It may not be absolutely clear in every case, but they are separable concepts.

Bumping.

Sooo... the only thing this trope that we need to do for this trope is to split off more subtropes, correct? If that is the case I don't think we need a TRS thread for that. I really don't see the point in renaming this trope due to the fact that it's performing extremely well with 2509 wicks and 3,598 inbounds and misuse hasn't really been proven. The OP's claims are very flimsy.

I am unconvinced that there is something seriously wrong with the trope.

Clock's expired, no activity.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.
