Indeed it was. Hell of a bold move on the part of the producers, too.

A... curious recap of the season finale:

'Bobby Hersh Borrows a Bike', and other children's stories
  • Bobby, Johnny, and Sameen want to help their friends have a good day. Johnny explains to Bobby that he needs to use his words to ask people how to find his friend Control. Control is with Johnny’s friend Harry, but there is a big mean bully named Peter who is being very nasty to them and saying lots of bad things. Sameen has another friend named Root, and even though no one is being a mean old bully to Root, Sameen wants to make sure she is ok and not lonely because that’s what friends do. Bobby borrows a bike for Sameen so that she can go to Root, because Bobby is practicing at playing well with others. Everyone likes Bobby secretly because he is swell.
  • Peter is being very unpleasant to Harry and Control, but they back each other up because letting bullies be mean to other people is uncool. He is also bullying a guy named Greer but Greer doesn’t seem to care and he’s making everyone else uncomfortable. Control tells Peter how terrible he is being to everyone and everyone quietly agrees that Control is pretty great. Meanwhile, Bobby and Johnny use their words to find out where the others are, with some assistance from Lionel, who brings Johnny’s puppy to play. Johnny knows Harry will be happy to see the puppy because everyone likes puppies. Playing with a puppy will definitely help Harry to have a good day.
  • Harry tells Peter a big story to try and stop him from being mean. Sameen and Root play dressups and experiment with computers. Greer bullies Peter right back and Peter realises that he was never as big and tough as he wanted to be. Greer is the meanest bully of all. Johnny and Bobby split up to search for their friends, and Johnny find Harry and stops Greer from hurting him anymore. Bobby finds out that Greer is trying to do bad things to a lot of people, and even though Greer’s bully friends come to hurt Bobby, Bobby doesn’t let bullies get the better of him because Bobby is swell and he knows that letting people be mean to others is wrong. Bobby is a hero and everyone secretly wishes they had told him how swell he was before and invited him to all their birthday parties.
  • Greer doesn’t want anyone to have any more birthday parties and he has made a big mess of everyone’s day. He even messes up Johnny and Harry’s house because he is the meanest bully ever. Johnny and Harry and Sameen and Root all have to go off to different places so that Greer and his bullies won’t follow them. Control is sad that Bobby can’t be invited to any birthday parties. But Root tells a story about Pandora’s Box, and everyone is reassured by the knowledge that there is still hope left for them to have a good day tomorrow instead. They are definitely filled with joy at this thought and no one is upset or crying and they are basically planning a big sleepover snuggle pile with movies and pizza. Lionel will be invited too because no one forgot that he is also their great friend who helps them. Everyone will be happy except for Greer because he is not invited and also he doesn’t get to play with the puppy. The end.

Agreed!

A Downer Ending for the whole season.

Season 4 is going to start on a very uncomfortable note.

Grandpa and I watch the show together. He was so disappointed that they did't get "that asshole" (Greer) that he's not going to watch anymore.

Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do a season finale. grin

Downer, but in the most awesome way. Cannot wait until season 4.

So what Greer wants is to become the Oracle of Delphi ? That's why I love, love, love this show. If you had suggested that six episodes ago, I'd have... well, I'd listen politely (that's how my mommy panda raised me), but I'd have disregarded it. But they make it work.

Had a feeling that Greer ran Vigilance but put it down to paranoia. I mean he couldn't be behind EVERYTHING. Oh wait. He can. That guy was insanely dangerous BEFORE Samaritan came online. Did notice that at the end, when John rescued Finch and was exchanging gunfire with Decima, Greer was just strolling away. Not just Bob who's implacable cool

Still think the situation will eventually resolve with the Neuromancer ending. The Machine and Samaritan will absorb each other can become something... else. That or the next season will be the Machine attempting to teach it morality. Hey, Root was a beta test ! tongue

Well. That's a way of finishing a season, all right.

So...does anyone think that the fourth season will be the last one?

It's just that from the look of it, Greer had them cornered pretty badly, I can't really imagine Team Machine evading him for a whole season.

Hmm...who knows, given this series' popularity, it might go up to season 5. If so, I imagine that season 4 would involve Team Machine getting back together and prepare for the final battle with Greer, with Season 5 being one long final battle and conclusion.

On the story of Padora's box, I remember reading somewhere (maybe this very site) that Hope was at the bottom of the box (jar) because it was the worst affliction of all. I think we can just put that down to Ancient Greeks being depressing tongue

Come to think of it, the series does like Greek motifs.

Greer has finally exposed a weak-point though. He's submitting to Samaritan. That's why I think the plan of attack will be altering how Samaritan thinks, to make it "Good", or at least distant, like the Machine. Assimilation or education

Hmm...what if Greer tries to assimilate his mind with Samaritan?

Maybe that's outside the plausible realm of this series' setting.

[up] Don't think its his style either. He wants a machine to rule the world; he's no faith in humans. I suspect he would include himself, though anything's possible. I'd have been surprised by this turn of events when Ellis was the greatest danger Team Machine faced.

@ Re Pandora's Box: I'll just keep it brief and say that there's really no two versions of the story that agree with one another. It's... complicated.

Then again, so are the implications behind the finale, so it might fit anyway in a roundabout sort of way tongue

I'd find interesting if the season 4 opening scene was Decima goons swiftly dismantling Elias and his entire crew.

Then a english-accented old man voice-over begins to speak: "You are being watched. We have a secret system, a good Samaritan that spies on you every hour of every day. I know because...I built it.

The Samaritan has been designed to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Unacceptable behavior involving ordinary people, people like you.

Behaviors the government considered...irrelevant. I don't. They wouldn't act so I decided that I would.

In charge of the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us, but victim or perpetrator, if you are a threat, we'll find you."

Or something of the sort. Point is, we need a Samaritan-opening.

Anything said by Greer is automatically sinister. tongue

I was actually thinking of the people who aren't in the show anymore. Elias, Zoe, Carter, everyone to do with HR. Sure, most of them are dead, but it seems so long ago and it was only this season.

Next season will end with wild mass guess Root having to upload John into the mothership's computer after his power core is damaged while Lionel and Shaw are trapped in the Otherverse, trying to find the Wizard Jo'na'than No Lan to save Clauldette from the orges. Finch, meanwhile is in 18th century France, chasing the serial killing known as the "Time Ender". Only on CBSwild mass guess

Finch, meanwhile is in 18th century France, chasing the serial killing known as the "Time Ender".

On the one hand, I'm sure you meant "serial killer," but on the other hand I'm having immense fun imagining Finch becoming powerful enough with his mastery of information to confront and manipulate Platonic ideal forms directly.

Interesting interview with the showrunners is up on io9 - http://io9.com/person-of-interests-creators-had-to-fight-for-the-show-1577050140, with an unabridged version here: http://observationdeck.io9.com/person-of-interest-the-complete-unedited-interview-1577052827

Highlights:

>If given the opportunity, the show will probably finish with season 5.

>The question of what alterations Greer made to Samaritan's code will be a major one in season 4.

>They intend to circle back down to some of the city politics/police stuff as well as the Samaritan plot.

>Hints that it won't be as simple as Machine = good, Samaritan = bad.

>They had to fight with executives to get the Machine/AI on the show from the beginning.

>And of course, the numbers never stop coming.
