I'm pretty sure she's at least based on the mythological Tethys. She's interesting in that she's one of the few youma with a distinct personality and motivation beyond "gather energy for our great leader." She's not one of the cannon fodder that the Dark Generals can order around, but reports directly to Queen Beryl (or rather, she should report to Beryl if she were doing her own job.)

Now I'm up to episode 15 again and wondering why the end credits song sounds messed up in the Sub of that one only. It's as if they layered something with itself a little bit off-synch and gave everything a "metallic echo" effect.

Wish I could take Ami's attack seriously, but every time she says "Mercury power, make up! Bubble spray!" my first thought is Mercury used Bubble Beam, it's super effective![lol]

[up] It doesn't help that Bubble Spray is defensive. I think Ami gets a better attack in R.

Now to be fair, I saw someone point out that Thetis was the name of another Greek sea lady, so maybe we'll never know what it is for sure. waii

I'm guessing these subtitled episodes on Hulu are from before they finished whatever restoration they had to do. Episode 18 has crackling throughout its credits songs and around the commercial break bumpers, even though you'd think they could simply replace those from any other source. Episode 20 also seemed to have its sound cut out for a moment during the preview at the end. But I think the graphics of Tuxedo Mask's transformation in episode 19 just can't be compressed well in that video format.

Uh, my latest observation about the soundtrack is that it works well to follow up Youma Attack with Flying Battery Zone.

And while your at it just replace that fight theme with this.

BSSM did have a Genesis game, the gameplay was alright, music a bit worse.

Speaking of, I really enjoy the jazz rock score, still holds up very well. Though not nearly as good, one thing the 90s dub did do was create some decent tunes of it's own.

It does help to give the impression that the Sailors are attacking from inside a disco club. grin

Well, if you're trying to decide which series to start on, I've gathered that R, S, Super S, and Sailor Stars are simply continuations of the original show, while Crystal and the live-action show are both total remakes from the beginning. Of course the original anime is the most full of filler due to how it was produced at the time, but you might find the filler episodes a fun way to build up to the more meaningful ones. Maybe you can watch multiple series and join the debates about the slight characterization differences. tongue Viz's new release seems to be making it easy to compare the original series to Crystal by posting English-subtitled episodes four times faster than the new show.

There's also Sera Myu.

Speaking of adaptations, seems I can't go anywhere to discuss the first anime without running into manga purists that are only too happy to tell me about it's shortcomings compared with the original. Granted I can't read the thing or watch Crystal subs, but not all changes can be strictly a bad thing. Like, there's cool stuff like Saturn being rebuilt as a cyborg and Mamoru being actually useful, but there's gotta be a lot of character developement that gets lost from anime to manga, and it seems a bit too gory and grimdark in places for it's own sake.

There are always purists no matter what it is who hate any adaptation of whatever the original was. Any change is a bad thing, because it strays frm the original vision. And sometimes they complain about stuff that was bad in the original as well, such as stilted dialogue or bad pacing.

Can't say I agree with that line of thinking. Most adaptations have strengths and weaknesses. And sometimes an adaptation is closer to what the creator wanted anyway, due to getting more freedom/money to actually realise the creation.

For Sailor Moon, I kinda prefer a mix of the manga and the original anime. And bits from Sailor Moon: Another Story, although I've probably forgotten about most of the stuff, since it was ages since I actually took in any part of the series. It was before You Tube and Fanfiction Dot Net, at any rate.

I always thought Hotaru as a cyborg felt too gratuitous, and it doesn't even really matter anyway— post the S arc of the manga, it's a plot point that really never comes up again.

The anime gave her, in turn, extra spotlight on her developing friendship with Chibiusa, which did a lot for both characters, so I think that was a more than fair trade.

After rewatching a few, the cruise ship episode's my favorite fluff so far. Has the best jokes so far, some les yay between Mars and Mercury, and the Youma of the week has a personality.

Finally watched Episode 6 of Crystal.

It's kinda nice to see this Beryl wouldn't allow Zoicite drop to his death after he sacrificed himself (lethally or not) for her. Old Beryl would just have pulled a You Have Outlived Your Usefulness 'that's your payment for failing me in the first place!' moment, but this one seems to be far more of a Benevolent Boss. She doesn't even seem to raise her voice to her subordinates as much as Old Beryl did.

What happened to We don't need men to save us Usagi? Fix yourself woman!!!!

Also, brainwashed Umino is hilariously creepy. The girls were pretty freaked out by him, and it was great.cool

So Queen Metallia was Sealed Evil in a Can huh?

Also just bugs me I don;t get why the girls didn't notice anything off with the arcade games. Usagi did notice, but even then her reactions not something you''d expect from a Polybius-esque game. The fact that it has a dvd/cd slot also should have added a little bit to the suspicions

I like how when all their attacks fail, a regular punch does the trick. Well, one time, at least.

Also, in the episode with her name, Minako's episode is called Sailor V, rather than after her planet, like for all other characters. Anyway, this is when it should turn good. She's my favourite character.
