What's an Argo? (New crowner Sept 11): Banned From Argo

Ok, if there are other tropes about not being allowed back to a bar or something, then my suggestion is too broad, but those should be linked from this trope. I didn't see anything that fit, and I've seen too many overly-specific, overly-limited tropes in the past to be willing to assume anything.

The word "banned" still doesn't seem quite right to me, even followed by "from", but I'm ok with "Argo Port" or "Port Argo" as a generic town name.

If we do it to add a "port" it'll be easier to add it after ward.

Banned From Place seems indicative, but doesn't sound very good to me. How about something like Lifetime Ban or Permanent Ban? Intuitive (character is forever banned from place/activity), easy to use in a sentence (Bob received a Lifetime Ban from My Local after a Noodle Incident)... might be too broad though.

Exactly. "Place/activity" and for any reason. Much too broad.

Does it have to be a specific reason? I don't see anything like that in the trope description, and the examples don't seem to follow any particular pattern.

From the description: "You don't actually mean for bad stuff to go down, but these things happen. There was nudity, violence, stuff blowing up, certain substances may have been imbibed/smoked, and whoops, you just started a revolution." The page also says it may be a Noodle Incident.

Essentially, the reason is that the characters have done something the local authorities (be they government, Mafia, or whatever) don't take kindly to and aren't ever allowed back. This means that they're not banned for no reason and it's not due to a case of mistaken identity or something someone else did. At least, that's my interpretation.

Not particularly, I suppose. It's a bit dense, but we've got a few egregious examples of that already.

It seems like there's fairly overwhelming support for a rename. Someone should make an alternative titles crowner later or tomorrow so we can stop this arguing.

As an aside, it seems to me like a disproportionate amount of time in the Trope Repair Shop is spent just debating over names, as opposed to moving, editing, reorganizing, etc.

Well, that's because you aren't reading the right topics. Names tend to be the most controversial thing we do and thus they tend to take up the most debate effort because it's hard to come to a consensus on them, but there are also a small number of topics that argue over splits, or definitions.

Most clean up efforts tend to be decided on quick though and all the thread gets are status updates and then lock.

Banned From Town gets my vote. Plenty of people still dont know where the hell Argo is or why it's important, even if you tell people it's a port. If we switch it to Banned From Port Argo, in a month's time somebody will make a rename thread demanding it be changed. Again.

Does it have to be because of a Noodle Incident or stuff like that? If not I would say this trope is actually in disuse because I can think of plenty RPG examples of not allowed back into town X because of something you did in the game.

Like Final Fantasy X and Bevelle (not allowed back in because you kinda killed two religious leaders) X-2 Kilika port (because you started a fight with one of the two factions.)

I think it doesn't have to be a Noodle Incident, that's just a bit of a joke in the description. Sure, it can be, but that's not the point.

I'm thinking of an example from a VERY obscure series, where the owner of a restaurant screams "BANNED FOR LIFE!" before throwing the protagonist out of his restaurant. Would Banned For Life work?

That works. I like it better than Banned From Town, because an important part of this trope is that it a permanent ban. It can be banned from anywhere but it's always banned for life.

@Shimaspawn I pay attention to those threads too, but it just seemed like name threads dominate. That reason does make sense, though. Name threads tend to be more contentious.

It doesn't have to be a Noodle Incident, Raso, it just has to be something the characters have done. That looks like an example to me.

Sounds like a dialog title to me, but I am by no means an expert on that rule. I added it to the crowner.

Only about a day. I made an alternative titles crowner because that's what everyone was talking about in the thread and a significant majority support rename, but the first crowner hasn't been here that long.

Right. The voting has stabilized, but we should still leave it up for a couple days.

Yeah, normal procedure is to leave a crowner running either three days or until the voting stabilizes, whichever is longer.

Three more days and the crowner still shows overwhelming support. Let's pick a new name, shall we?

To everyone upvoting Banned From Port Argo and Banned From Argo Port: think for a second. This is the same title with the addition of the word Port. So okay, we know it's a Port. People are still going to see the title and think "So, where is Port Argo, What is it from, Why is it important enough to get it's own name, and Why have I never heard of it?" Come on, the first crowner showed basically everyone thought the original name sucked. Adding the word Port hardly remedies the issue.

And Banned From Place? Congratulations, you win the award of 'Most Generic Title On The Wiki'.
