From what I've found, everything is an improvement to Saito.
Seriously, this may just be me observing this as a non-fan, but it seems to me that Saito is the least interesting character in the entire series. That's the only way I can explain how Saito is either replaced, rewritten into a new character, or otherwise ignored completely in every fanfic I've seen for this series (note: the few fics I've seen that rewrite Saito have explicitly stated that they have done so).
Well, a fair amount of the time the new character is essentially just Saito with a different looking body and more powers. And sometimes the actual text is more or less copy-pasted with a different name.

If a commando came in decked out in gear like that he'd probably be thought of as a demon at worst, or a satanist (or the Halkeginian equivelant) at best. That will lead to some interesting interactions.

Story fluff details that void mages get one of 4 void familiars attached to them. Unless a fic wants to switch the Gandalfr with, say, Vindalfr then Louise's familiar will only be great with weapons.
@77
Saito isn't a bad character per se, it's just that his two most defining features - his relationship with Louise and his status as Gandalfr - makes him easily replaceable in the realm of crossover fics. Especially since by the nature of the story whomever Louise summons must take up those two traits anyways.

#IceBearForPresidentSaito started as an everyman, and everymen are easily replaceable, but not bad characters, most often. If anything, I'd say he got ruined only after Flanderization sank in and he became a stupid perverted punching bag, but then, everyone else was Flanderized in the anime, too.
Question: does anyone know if Unfamiliar is dead, or on indefinite hiatus? That Cliffhanger has been pissing me off for a year now...

Officially it's supposed to be on hiatus. Last word we got on it was a "It'll be done when it's done." way back in May, right before the author went to play some ME 3.
...
Oh my. Mass Effect 3's ending killed Unfamiliar!

I've always maintained videogaming is the bane of fanfiction writing in general.
At first I was thinking it'd be neat to leave Sansa with the Gandalfr powers, because it would take her so damn long to notice them and it'd take the story in a whole new direction. But then I got a little bit more serious and remembered what Martin said in one interview, that all the Stark kids in the current generation have the potential to warg, including Sansa. She just might be a natural for the Windalfr spot, which could take the Romalian end of things in an odd direction. Is it canon or fanon that the Pope's charisma is partially his familiar working at the animal side of humanity?
A True Lady's Quest - A Jojo is You!Huh. Seeing that actually makes me depressed it wasn't continued because it is good. Also I'm even sadder to realize there are no crossovers between the two on FF.net.
Unclouded TJ: Taking Bunny-Ears Lawyer too literally.@ Spirit:
Only four Servant Classes Void Familiars, you say? Interesting. What are the details for each servant, and where can I find them?
The wiki has details, as usual. The short version is that the 4 familiars are the Gandalfr, whose power is mastery with all weapons they holds, Windalfr, whose power is mastery over and commanding of animals, Lifdrasir, whose power is provide energy to power their master's spells, and Myozthirirn, whose power is more or less mastery over magic and magical items.

#IceBearForPresidentThanks, this is helpfull. So, if a guy was able to, say, summon shadow dogs, would he qualify for a Windalfr when becoming a familiar?
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.Void familiars are always human. And the Windalfr is always the familiar of the Romalian void mage. So no.
#IceBearForPresidentI see... Well, that one idea I had can be scrapped now.
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often. If you think it makes for a good story, go for it, even if it breaks a bit of canon, especially if it's about some minor rule that only applies to that very specific situation anyway.
Check out my fanfiction!Anyone check out my Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann / Zero No Tsukaima crossover story yet?
Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams! And Louise summons Lordgenome.
Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams!Awesome.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.<sees summary> Aw man, I thought it was going to be the adult Lordgenome from the series. Still, this kind of thing is JUST WHAT I WAS.... WAITING FOOOOOOOORRRR!!!!
It's actually old bald badass Lordgenome in the body of his younger self (what happened was, the remnants of his Spiral Energy got pulled into the portal and reformed into his younger form to satisfy the requirements of the Familiar Summoning Ritual.
And yes, a lot of awesomeness has ensued so far.
As of chapter 5, Derflinger is now within a Core Drill... And who's that person Tiffania's talking to?

Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams!Hrm.
This has given me an idea for a compilation fic - I've never seen/read Familiar of Zero, but since every chapter would just be the familiar summoning ceremony and a little fallout after that, it's not that big of a problem. And then, anybody who wants to take any of the chapters for themselves and expand it into a full-blown fic can do so.
I already have an idea for the first three..... granted, two are from the same series, but the characters themselves are different enough to swing their fics into completely different territory.
& That sounds like an improvement over Saito.
