[up]It's simply called "Ultraman", and it appears to be a sequel to the original series, starring Ultraman's son (description on the other wiki here). A quick google search pointed me to Mangafox for reading it, but I don't know if that site's good, I only read physical copies.

Edit : also, it actually started being published in 2011, but it's only getting translated now here, so maybe you've actually already read it. Also, my informations were wrong, it's not written by the same author as Pluto. Damn those Cowboy BeBop at His Computer journalists.

Waittaminute is that the Ultraman manga where he uses a Power Armor? The one that's all the rage now?

Man, I thought it was something else lol but I knew of that manga. Need to read that again someday.

The thing is that when I hear "tokusatsu", "televised Henshin Hero" is what usually first comes to mind. Which means Kamen Rider, SS/PR, Metal Heroes, and Tomica Hero and the Ultra Series (and Garo, and the live-action Sailor Moon, etc., etc., etc.).

I have also only ever seen the first black-and-white Gamera film... but I loved the heck out of it.

If I ever do get around to checking out another Ultrashow, Ultra Seven and Ultraman Ace are probably the next few I'll take a look at (because I know they had dubs).

Doctor Who is considered Tokusatsu by people in Japan.

Hey guys, got another crossover idea:

Kamen Rider Shin x My Hero Academia.

No, not Kazamatsuri Shin, but his son, whose name is Kazamatsuri Shiin—as seen in the SIC Hero Saga.

Yeah, basically Shin Jr. but they have different kanjis. I think I've mentioned this before, or did I do that on tumblr?

Anyway, Shiin has weird-ass psychic powers in the movie, so I thought I'd incorporate it alongside his metamorphosis powers. Thing is, in a world filled with supers, he was the only one who grew up before it's a thing. He was somewhat resentful of his powers since he looks monstrous, but with all them quirky people appearing, he need to adapt to current society.

How else but going to high school?

Yes, he was born in '91 so he should be about our age, but for the purpose of this story... either he age slowly or is youthful enough to look like a high school student.

Heh.

Anyway, just saw Drive 36.

Goh and Chase giving awkward thumbs up in the background cracked me up as much as it did Shinnosuke. And Brain is in deep deep shit, because Medic will fuck him up first chance she gets.

We finally got to see all three Drive Riders stand together, and it was great.

Hopefully, I will finally be able to resume my Kabuto run this weekend.

And maybe also continue Amazon, too.

It's been a while but Black and Kiva 23 are down!

Black 23:

  • He's using Telekinesis! That monster! Punch his head off Black!

  • ~Black punches off the Monster's head~

  • Holy fuck! 0_o He did it. Well, now.....the head becomes a little kids pet.....oooooookay.

  • So apparently, losing one of your brains makes you more powerful. Damn mutants! Even logic doesn't seem to stop them.

  • And in the end, the evil head sacrifices itself to save a little boy....... this was a really fucked up episode.

Kiva 23:

  • Are you in love? Are you a Fangire? Then you're probably already dead. Sorry 'bout you luck.

  • Dammit Otoya! You can't just hit on one woman while still trying to court Yuri! That's a dick move!

  • And I knew the dude was a Fangire, but it looks like something really awful happened to his girl.sad

  • As for you Otoya! I've had enough of your shit1 I hope someone beats you to death!

  • ~Jiro goes Wolfen and beats Otoya to death~ .......wow. That did not feel half as good as I thought it would.sad

[up][up]Amazon also once punched a monster's head off.

But then, he was spectacularly pissed that day.

Did the monster not only keep fighting, but turn out to be even stronger?

Did it's head befriend a little boy?

Did things actually manage to be weirder than that?

Admittedly, no, but I was just referring to the awesomeness of punching a monster's head off.

The cat bastard poisoned Amazon to almost-death, then attacked the nun and orphanage/school/church full of children (as you might know, Friend to All Children is half of Amazon's entire shtick, the other half being Bloodier and Gorier), so IIRC Amazon mostly recovered from the poison out of pure rage and willpower, then transformed and instead of using his regular Finishing Move - a pair of slashes with his arm-spines - he just punched the monster's head clean off.

I might be misremembering it slightly, but I very definitely remember Cat Beastman suffering more than the usual amount of maiming, even for the show he was in.

Was Amazon the one that ripped off a monster's head with it's spine still attached to it or was it some other guy (gills?)

Yeah, after a bit of fighting, Amazon blinds it, slaps it around and then straight up smacks the cat's head off. Episode 10. cool

I gotta say, due to all my hype for the upcoming Ant-Man film, I'm considering getting into this franchise.

The ones that look most interesting to me are Black, Agito, Ryuki, Faiz, Double, Fourze, and Gaim. What are your thoughts on those entries?

All I can talk about is Gaim but;

It's a little bit different to other riders. Notably, while most have their longer story spaced out quite a lot and mostly just broken up into single episodes Monster of the Week style or two-parters (some series rely on a two-parter structure heavily, some less so), Gaim has a lot more focus on its story and rarely lets up, although it can be a bit slow at the beginning. The only points where it really has filler are its crossovers, which shouldn't be a problem if you're watching it after the fact. Also, despite having a fruit theme, it's fairly dark. None of the gore of the more violent riders but tone and Fridge Horror. There are a lot of monsters, who are still the main villain but there's a lot of Rider in-fighting too. It's made by Gen Urobuchi, who also made Madoka, if that means anything to you.

I liked it and think its worth it (the crossovers are debatable- I'd say only watch them if you also watch the thing its crossing over with) but it has some notable differences from most other rider series, mostly in story structure.

Double and Fourze are standard jumping in points. Black is Showa so the effects and plot quality is a bit dated.

If Double looks especially interesting to you, check out the currently airing Drive, it has some similarities and is also quite good.

Actually, yeah, Double is a very good jumping on point. Kuuga as well.

The former starts a new shared continuity that lasts up until the end of Wizard (where as the following series Gaim, takes place in it's own world, then starts up a new world when Drive starts), while the latter began the Heisei era and is unconnected to any other series before it (and arguably is not tied to anything preceding it, barring a loose connection to Agito).

Drive seems to be that good litmus test to see what era of Riders you'd be best suited for.

If you enjoyed the first half of Drive, you'll enjoy the Heisei Phase 2 era.

If, however, you enjoyed the second half of Drive more, then the Phase 1 Heisei Riders are your best bet.

I'm enjoying Drive thoroughly but I was not impressed with most early Heisei tongue
