Thinks have gotten darker but I wouldn't call it grim dark...

Honestly, the real problem is it feels like a 50+ episode anime desperately trying to cram 15 plot threads into a few remaining epuisodes and just comes out not focusing on multiple major characters.
Yeah, it does feel like its trying to rush everything (We still dont know what the deal with the Berserk Aquarion moment was)
Oh well, I'm still greatly enjoying it. Although its basically impossible for Zessica to win now.
That was really heart wrenching when she asks if in another 12,000 years it will work out between the two of them.

It kinda feels like Mikono's the only girl without any real problems surrounding her romance. Nothing really serious keeping her from Amata except for the guy who is also Amata.
I'd call that a serious problem.
what really annoys me about the short run is that one of the major reasons that makes Mikono so insufferable is her characterization is so flat and waffly. at least Amata has the vaguely stupid excuse that all his backbone is in Kagura.
I really don't get the hate for Mikono. She's not my favorite character of course but she's not horrible to me.
I mean she did go all the way to search for Fudou, not to mention being key to helping Yunoha get out of her Heroic BSoD.
I don't know if that first one was strictly needed. It's Fudo after all.
She's a very week character in comparison to the rest of the female cast, though, and her only real role in the plot is that of Damsel in Distress. It's hard to have sympathy for her when her biggest conflict is "Being loved by two boys at once is so hard."
I don't particularly care for Yunoha as a character, but she managed to achieve substantial development and audience sympathy in her focus episodes. Mikono hasn't even achieved that much in an entire focus season.
This.
She'd be less annoying if she did more than "omg amata and kagura, please dont fight. i cant choose between you two so I'm going to ineffectually stand here!"
Her role is also to be The Heart
Or did you miss the episode where she helps Yunoha out of her Heroic BSoD ?
Yeah she's a weakling but I don't think she's The Load like some people make her out to be.
I don't hate Mikono but I find her really boring. Unless she's being hilarious.

So, apparently spoilers for EVOL revealed who Amata and Kagura are.
Two halves of Apollonius' flying dog. Troll or not troll? YOU decide.

the problem is she's not very good at being the heart believably. And when it comes to anyone close to her like Amata, Kagura, or Zessica, she can do balls-all to help them through obvious emotional crisis.
Yeah, apparently it was even mentioned in an interview with Kawamori, who gave it with all seriousness (meaning it increases the chance that it's an elaborate joke on the production's part). The gist is that Amata/Kagura are actually split-reincarnations of Apollonius' pet dog... which means that someone else is Apollonius/Apollo.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if, by process of elimination, Apollo turned out to be Zessica?
They did kind of hint at that.
What with the whole "Aquarion will not move without its chosen element"
followed by Solar Aquarion glowing GREEN and Mykage calling in his deal with Zessica ONE SECOND LATER
That would be a marvellous troll.
Especially once people start factoring in the Reincarnation Romance stuff.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."My least-liked girl getting together with my favorite girl? I'm so conflicted.
And then we consider the fact that the last time we saw Mikono, she was on Altair.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."If that is going to happen with anyone, it should be Andy and Mix.
You know how I said the show really needs to do something impressive to make me like it?
Making the primary male leads the reincarnation of the original hero's dog does not look like it's going to be the way to do it.
I'll withhold judgement until the episode is out, but right now it's shaping up to be a disappointment.
The thing is though, the fact that the interviewee in question was so straight-faced about it (and let's face it, this is Kawamori here) does make it sound like an elaborate prank.
Also, we're already familiar with someone else who was a reincarnation of pet: Reina from the first series, who was (correct me if I'm wrong here) Celianne's puppy.

so the subs seem to be up on tiorrent as of 8 mins ago . MY BODY IS READY
Mix's genderbending has nothing to do at all with all of the other writing choices, it's tangentially related at best.
