Guess that trope, fellas!

It's about a parent barging in on their teenager/adolescent in an amorous position.

I'm pretty sure we can rename this without trouble. How about Sex Interrupted By Parent or Parent Interrupts Sex

It doesn't have to be sex.

How about Coitus Interruptus? (I think that's a Big Bang theory episode I'm thinking of there... can't remember for certain)

Edit: Hum, apparently that links to Coitus Uninterruptus, so that may not work.

"Coitus Interruptus" means something else in real life. Although it probably shouldn't redirect to Coitus Uninterruptus either.

How about Parental Interruption? or Interrupted Intimacy?

Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!

I'd go with Parental Interruption.

Agree, this needs changing. I've seen it misused for Exactly What It Says on the Tin. (And the page quote isn't an example, though I guess it could remain for comedy value. In fact, that's the only reason I can possibly see to keep it.)

No idea for names. Parental Interruption is the best I've seen so far, but it doesn't really indicate that it refers to sex/snogging.

On a sidenote, it feels very wrong that we have Coitus Uninterruptus and not Coitus Interruptus.

Parents Walk In at the Worst Time

And make it more general.

This name ought to be for when Mom brings cookies to her child- often used as a humorous device. IE The kids neighborhood gang is at The Hero's house planning their epic assault on the alien base to save the world, and in walks his mom to provide him and his friends with some cookies.

I also think it should be made more general.

There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here.

On that note, I wonder if Primal Scene would best be renamed to Kids Walk In At The Worst Time?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Primal Scene is a pre-existing term, though. (Other than that, I agree that it's very non-indicative.) It does need some good redirects.

Primal Scene sounds like the scenes at the beginning of say the Jungle Book showing how he has gone primal... anyway make the kids one a redirect at the very least.

While Primal Scene is indeed a pre-existing term, it is not a common one, and more importantly does not mean what the trope page says it does.

Make a thread for Primal Scene, then; this thread is about Mom Brings Milk and Cookies

I think the article itself needs fixing too. For one thing, it doesn't say what the parent walks in on. (I've assumed it was solely about sex, since it contrasts Primal Scene; other people have said it's about making out as well.)

Also, "the mother shows up bringing drinks or snacks" probably shouldn't be a requirement. She could just be sticking her head in asking if everything is all right.

The way I see it, there are two Sister tropes here:

  • Teenagers are having sex/getting Intimate. Parent walks in to ask question/provide something/whatever. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Teenagers are in room not having sex/getting intimate. Parent, assuming teenagers are having sex/getting intimate, makes up excuse to barge into room.

The second is a subversion of the first.

Crowner says Rename. So what names have we got?

Parents Walk In at the Worst Time would be best, as it describes both of the situations that the trope is mainly used in.

@19, 20: They have a quite different feel to them. The first is most closely related to Primal Scene, the other is closer to Innocent Innuendo. Maybe we could make it a soft-split?

Soft split sounds good to me.
