Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I would love them to do Starfox (Eros) perhaps to get more backstory of Thanos and maybe kick an ass or two.

Who said anything about wanting Flash to be popular? Arrogant jock isn't the same thing as being popular.

It's part and parcel of the archetype. The arrogant quarterback is typically depicted as the male equivalent of the Alpha Bitch, surrounded by a fawning crowd of sycophants who hang on his every word, adored by everyone despite his toxic, constantly hostile attitude, and only the poor, downtrodden, victimized hero and maybe some friends are able to see through his popularity to the twisted individual within.

The point is, moving away from that archetype with Flash would probably be for the better. At the very least, giving him a bit more depth and complexity than his archetype usually has, since Comics Flash is a much stronger and more interesting character than his film and TV counterparts usually are.

Amazing did a pretty good job of making him at least 2-dimensional, though they still had everyone in the school hanging on his every word..

Frankly, characters like Flash's depictions in the 90's cartoon and the 2001 film are the reason I became a bully. It was, ironically, out of a fear of getting bullied like the nerds I see on TV and in movies all the time. I was the kid who thought Peter Parker should just kick Flash's ass, so that's the social image I aspired to build around myself whenever I felt threatened.

Ideally I would see him characterized along the lines of the Jerk Jock character from Stranger Things. He's an asshole but he has sympathetic qualities and actual motivations for acting the way he does, and he undergoes a Character Arc and becomes less of an ass by the end.

He's not just an asshole because playing football and having friends makes you an asshole, as is the case in most teen fiction.

That's basically what happened in the comics. Flash is an asshole because of his alcoholic, abusive father and the constant pressure and physical abuse heaped on him. He's crying out for stability, for some measure of control, to feel like he has power. Over time, he undergoes Character Development and he and Peter actually become decent friends in college.

Inspired by his hero, Spider-Man, Flash goes on to enlist in the U.S. Army and loses his legs in a selfless act of heroism during the Iraq War. And, well, now he's Agent Venom and it's awesome.

As a kid, I used to be so afraid of meeting people like Flash Thompson. Looking back, I wish I could have known more of his story then. He would have been a damn fine role model.

And then he lost his memory and went back to his high school personality because comics books.

I'm so glad they still were able to bring Flash to a really good place characterization wise after that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would have been interested in seeing the Spectacular Spider-Man Flash become Agent Venom.

His character was moving in interesting directions by the end of the second season.

Flash Thompson is actually one of the few characters in comics who got to grow up and change his personality. He went from a bully to a hero, basically, and it was all pretty well developed (bar a few amnesia storylines). It would be interesting, now that it seems they are giving the symbiote to someone else, to see what he does next (I think he's already gotten some leg prosthesis, so he can walk without the symbiote).

I also wonder if perhaps the MCU Flash will become the first Venom instead of Eddie Brock.

Will the other parallel dimensions get their own number signifiers? Also this could lead to a lot of problems with keeping the universe coherent, especially if it involves Death Is Cheap and The Other Darrin.

Personally, I'd say they should go the Bulk and Skull route with Flash. He's a bully, but he's far too stupid to be a threat and all and is the Butt-Monkey.

Be more entertaining than the Sociopathic Jerkass he's usually depicted as.

Whats weird is that the popular kids in the original Spider-Man comics did try to make an effort to include Peter

[up][up][up][up]Where does it say anything about Fox working with Sony?

Some description of the Ragnarok concept art. Looks like Fenris was spotted, and they say Thor has a radical new look with shorter hair and no costume.

Hmm, not seeing anything about Sony and Fox in that article, unless you mean Sony's Spider-Man deal and the tentative Marvel/Fox collaboration on a TV show.

Yes, I'm referring to that.

They should take advantage of this and make a Secret Wars movie. Avengers vs X-men, return of Raimi's Spider-man, and Emma Stone as Spider-Gwen would be amazing to see on screen.

The Grandmaster meanwhile reportedly doesn't have his trademark blue skin or white hair and just looked like Jeff Goldblum in space!

...So, is this just the concept art, or is it the final version? Because I need to see blue Jeff Goldblum.

Anyway, so any conformation about the other infinity stones? I guess eye of Agamoto is time and Hel with have Spirit but Im not sure.

I think Channing Tatum would have made a good Flash Thompson/Agent Venom. He's big and beefy, and he's got the perfect mix of douche-bro and earnestness.
