Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I recognized Coulson in Iron Man 2 as "secret agent dude from the first Iron Man."

I just want to say, why did this John Lam guy think it was a good idea to plaster his name all over it like that?

Maybe it wasn't actually him. Maybe he's trying to frame the real John Lam.

Iron Man 2, just saw it again. It is.... Eh. Meh.

It's not awful, it's just never going to live up to 1 or 3 which is I think part of why it gets its poor rap otherwise it would be another average to not great film. Though it was also disjointed, the plot wasn't always right, I was actually surprised to see that Swanpride was right: SHIELD was some of the best parts of the film.

The actors are mostly what hold it afloat otherwise it would be less watchable. Lord help me, I think Thor might actually be a little better. I don't care for it too much but at least it's mostly straightforward and I don't feel like characters are dragging around idiot balls.

I mean Pepper found out way too late in the movie that Tony was dying.

Though watching this did allow me to see the Iron Man films all have a "Busted up worn down Tony Stark builds important thing" montage.

People get very intense when it comes to leaks and giffing. The ass who runs Heroic Hollywod threw a hissy hit the other day when someone else leaked the Civil War concept art (which he claimed were just his "leftovers").

If you're gonna get in potential legal trouble you should at least get credit!

[up][up] He was a failure, that's all. Just like Loki at first. He needs to come back so he can RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE. And the most important thing is he has awesomness points. thats all. awesome. also it would be interesting to see what he would do if he comes back since marvel has the entire spiderman verse now

When studios send out footage, they mark it themselves so that it is easier to figure out where the leak is. John Lam is most likely not the guy who leaked it, but someone else got his hands on the footage send to John Lam somehow.

This is btw the reason why I think that the CW and CBS leaks which happened in the last years were intentional. Too high quality but above all, no markers on it. Something like this can only come directly from the studio.

Given the premise of Guardians Of The Galaxy, think we should have Ego The Living Planet for GOTG Vol. 2?

[up]Well, if the theme is daddy issues, then what about the High Evolutionary (aka. "Cosmic Frankenstein")? Id imagine one or more of his "children" would have a bone to pick with him.

[up]Well think of The Collector's small Mr. Exposition role. Ego or HE could fulfill that trope for the sequel.

There's nowhere for Justin Hammer to rise to. He lacks physical prowess, intellectual prowess, political savvy, etc. Literally the only thing that was ever threatening about him was the company, never Hammer himself.

Hammer Industries might be able to come back in a more dangerous fashion, but Justin's more of a handicap than a villain in his own right. He's entertaining to watch, but he doesn't know a good villainous plan from his own arse and his only motivation is to do what Tony did but moreso, because he's an insecure little prick that desperately wants to be Tony Stark.

So, basically, he's like Syndrome but with none of the character's competency or intelligence. It's kind of the point of the character: He's a joke who honestly thinks he can compete on this level but is sorely mistaken.

The only way Hammer could really be of any use in a future storyline is if he started building drones for HYDRA or the Masters of Evil or something. But even that's doubtful because I doubt Marvel is gonna do killer robot drones again, and I'm likely to believe that most of the threat from the drones was Vanko's doing anyway.

[up][up][up][up]OMG, Tobias! Lay off! He's doing the best he can! You're hurting his feelings. tongue

Seriously though, only reason I think anyone would want him to show up again is so that a more hi-profile Marvel villain can give him "the Azula Lecture" before leaving him to die.

Justin Hammer doesn't have the tech savvy to build anything. He's not a CEO/Engineer hybrid like Stark, he's just a CEO, no more qualified to build robotic death machines than Pepper is. That's why he needed Vanko in the first place.

As a nifty Genius Bonus, there's a part where he's describing the Ex-Wife where he inadvertantly runs afoul of the Department of Redundancy Department. He says this:

This is a kinetic-kill, side-winder vehicle with a secondary cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine RDX burst.

In munitions lingo, RDX is a chemical abbreviation for cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine. The reason Hammer said it that way is because that's how it would appear in a datasheet his engineers sent him. "Kinetic-kill, side-winder vehicle with a secondary cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) burst."

That he verbally adds the RDX demonstrates that Hammer has no idea what these words coming out of his mouth actually mean. He just memorized the descriptions in preparation for his pitch. Justin Hammer is a salesman, not an engineer.

Iron Man 2. Justin hammer. Bring back the HAMMER SOMEONE

In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. thread, I suggested they introduce the organization H.A.M.M.E.R. and have Justin Hammer replace Norman Osborn as the jailed supervillain put in charge of a government organization.
