Springtime For Hitler is one of those witty titles that to some means nothing. It's only redirect (You Fail Failing Forever) is one of the defunct You Fail (X) Forever format and the main title is confusing to those of us who don't get it.

As a new name, I would suggest Failing At Failing, Failure To Fail or soke similar

It's one that isn't clear at defining the trope in question (unless I'm being a monumental imbecile, which is also likely).

You don't just arbitrarily rename tropes. You have to prove its being misused first. Grab fifty random wicks, check them all, and publish it here.

Well, there are lots of tropes with even less clear titles, and they don't tend to get renamed if you can't show misuse or underuse, so...I agree that it could have a better title, but I'm not hopeful.

To be fair, the OP brings up valid points...

Springtime for Hitler found in: 346 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 1,150 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '0

...but then there's that. That's the proof against them.

Eh, can't blame you for thinking it should be renamed. I mean, that probably should've been caught in YKTTW.

I think it predates YKTTW, though.

This is a reference to a movie from 1968. That is 43 years old.

I would suggest that any reference to something that is more than a certain number of years old—and I'm not sure how many, but 43 ought to be enough—is probably a classic and we should be much less willing to rename it on the grounds that one troper hasn't heard of it. This applies to Shakespeare and Citizen Kane as well as The Producers.

And that was adapted for Broadway in 2001 and ran for 6 years. And then was re-adapted back into a successful movie in 2005.

Welcome, glad to see someone making their way to us. Normally, it's a good idea to patrol YKTTW and look for any names that look screwy or are direct character/work references, and look into them.

Anyway, given usage, I'm not sure we could rename this. I do think a wik check is in order though.

I've always had trouble that the definition never seems to be clearly about either trying to fail or failing at failing.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Both, DQZ: It's trying to fail and failing at failing. Or succeeding despite your deliberate best efforts to fail.

Then I propose we split, since not all examples have both.

Just plain trying to fail should fit under Throwing the Fight. I can't think of a situation where you can fail to fail without trying to fail, so I'm not sure we need a trope for that.

^^ Wait, what? I had read the article's lead in the sense of "If you set out to deliberately fail, and [succeed at the intended task], then what have you done?" Apparently it's the opposite, where it's the attempt in question that fails, not an overall "fails as planned".

I blame the Logic Bomb.

I've never heard of the Trope Namer and I found it difficult to remember what the trope was when I was new.

The name is not informative, but I don't think it's being misused.

Btw, I vote to cut the Artistic License Failure redirect. The trope isn't actually about author's artistic liscense on failure

Contrary to what some people claim, we quite often rename tropes if their old name is unclear or confusing.

It's just that we prefer not to if the trope is heavily used. This one is used in 346 articles; I'd have to look up Fast Eddie's post on the subject, but I'm pretty sure this falls well short of his criteria for "heavily used".

The usage page says it brought 1154 people to the wiki, but we don't know if those people came from this title or a redirect, so that doesn't help. Google shows that the general usage of this term does not match our usage.
