I don't even like Judge Dredd that much and I know the character is sorely in need of this.
That other movie was just... just... augh.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.GAZE INTO THE FIST OF DREDD!
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.it has a pretty good writer so this will be worth a look
This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?Kind of bittersweet, given that the first movie killed the comic franchise over 15 years ago.
I'm a skeptical squirrelEh, I kind of liked the old Dredd movie. It was enjoyable in that cheesy, so bad it's good kind of way.
^^If it killed the franchise, then why is it still going? ;P
Long live Cinematech. FC:0259-0435-4987I never said its death was permanent.
We did get a decent licensed game out of it.
I'm a skeptical squirrelIm not an expert on 2000AD but I don't think the film had to much on it's sales. Maybe on Americanimports though.
Am I a good man or a bad man?I for one wish it the best of luck.
Oh look I mispeled somethink.According to our Ink-Stain Adaptation article: Judge Dredd had a film adaptation that had a specific devastating impact. While in Britain, Dredd is an old warhorse of a comic that isn't going anywhere, the movie was the first exposure most Americans had to the franchise. Almost ten years later, the impact can be seen in DC's failed attempt to market Judge Dredd trade paperbacks in American comic stores. A new film adaptation has been in pre-production for some time - time will tell whether it has any impact on the way America sees the character.
Wow, there hasn't been a post in here since my birthday last year.
I've never read the comics or seen the Stallone film (two things I plan to rectify soon), but I'll support anything Karl Urban is in.
Speaking of, the trailer:
And Rob Schneider is nowhere to be found...thank God.
I'm game to see Judge Dredd on the big screen.
As long as he keeps his helmet on and doesn't meet the ABC Warriors, Johnny Alpha or Nemesis the Warlock, I am not fussed.
Think I will wait for the blu-ray though.
Being what a hassle it is to come by any 2000 AD stuff in the States, I consider myself one of the biggest Judge Dredd fans on this side of the Atlantic Ocean pretty much by default. I'm probably the only person in the New York metropolitan area with Complete Case Files Vols. 1-19; Rebellion/2000 AD started reprinting the earlier volumes exclusively for sale in the United States* a year or two ago, but by the time they started doing that, I already had the first 14 volumes of the UK editions so no going back now. Hell, I once bullshat an entire blue book exam paper about Plato's Republic for a philosophy course that I didn't attend for more than half a semester by describing Judge Dredd's backstory and overview in the vaguest terms. Aced the exam and the course.
Without a doubt, I'm looking forward to this. The one thing I am counting on is that this movie will tell a great Dredd story. For what it is, if anything like Judge Dredd were to be adequately adapted into a movie (with added shot at basing an actual series off of this), I'm confident that this movie's screenplay would be the best to do that; all that matters to be seen is the full execution.
What I am disappointed about, though, is that much of the movie's overall look and setting design look rather contemporary, compared to the source material. For all the shit anyone can fling at the Stallone film, it, at least, did a commendable job of capturing the fantastic and off-beat visuals and atmosphere of the comic's pages. That hover car ride Rob Schneider takes during the opening credits of the Stallone film? That's what I want to see! I'm seeing way too much sky in this new trailer. For what it is, this MC1 feels more like the prawns' slum in District 9* than, say, Blade Runner's Los Angeles. And the costumes! Urban and Thirlby look like the new Murphy and Lewis, and anybody who isn't a Judge or a Bit Part Bad Guy looks like they're wearing items from the The Gap's current clothing line that you can go out and buy right now.
Also, the way that trailer was cut makes it feel like Dredd is more of your straight-forward, tough, good guy anti-hero. For now, I'll just owe it to the studio wanting to show something that might have appeal to anybody and not make a fuss about it, but I really hope Dredd's character is a bit more morally complex in the final product.

^^ According to comic series co-creator John Wagner, the helmet stays on in the movie.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpAye, but will they get the mile-wide tyres working on the Lawmasters? Instead of wimping out like they did in that Stallone thing.
No. Well, thicker tires, sure, but these lawmasters suck, too. Their design appears to be based off of some sports bike model.◊
EDIT: Also, just starting to notice the Easter Eggs in the trailer...
- City block @0:18 is named 'Sternhammer'
- News feed @1:04 reports stumm gas being deployed during riots at "Fergie Memorial" (Fergie, being a character who had several memorials built in his honor around the city after the events in "The Day The Law Died"... and who was later re-imagined as Rob Schneider's character in the Stallone movie).
- Advert for "hotties" @1:20.

I didn't even know that this movie existed. Then I saw Karl Urban's name and squeed. So I'm excited to see him, at least. He falls under the Rule of Sean Connery.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyFirst time I heard about someone wanting to get a project like this into production was in 2008. At that time, there also seemed to be ambition to make a sequel that would introduce the Dark Judges.
I'm guessing that would still depend on how well this reboot is received.

Looks pretty good. Although I'm a bit concerned the movie won't get enough attention because the plot is similar to The Raid.
Regrdless of that issue I'll be in the cinema watching this.
It won't be getting enough attention because it's being released during a month when most people don't usually go to the movies (at least, not in the United States). Given the size of its budget, though, I think this has a good shot at breaking even.

I understand that but I'm mentioning The Raid because most of the internet is going in a frenzy over the similarities. Just to note it, Dredd had it's script and started filming first.
But I agree the film will get a decent box office.
I've already noticed those similarities myself, and I don't even have interest in watching The Raid. Being a huge Dredd fan, I can easily overlook it seeing that a good deal of stories in the comics are obviously inspired by, if not directly based on, the premises of other works; hell, if this Dredd movie turns out to actually be more satirical and humorous than this trailer lets on, it might just turn out to be a downright parody of The Raid.
I really hope though that there's a lot more to the narrative (or, at least, more to the setting and characters) than what this trailer is cut showcase. Otherwise, I might as well just conclude that the trailer is a complete summary of an entire standard, dull action movie plot that actual gives away what happens to the chief antagonist at the conclusion of the story (Who do you think is getting thrown out a window after being given a death sentence? But seriously, in HD quality, pause on the right spot at that moment in the trailer, and you'll clearly notice Dredd's throwing the main antagonist "Ma-Ma" out the window.)

I noticed that too.
Which is a shame as they spoiled a really awesome moment. I mean imagine watching the film and seeing Dredd confronting Ma-Ma and sentencing her to death and then he in his Badass glory throws her out the window. That would've been f*cking awesome to not be spoiled by. Also judging by some trailer reviews and quick scene at the beginning of the trailer this might be a karmic death as Ma-Ma seems to punish anyone by throwing them out of the building.
I have yet to see The Raid also but I agree with all of your points.
