Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, yeah, Trump is already noticeably worse than Bush, which is already saying something.
The only way I can imagine Trump not going down as one of, if not the worst president is if he gets impeached, like, next week. Because historians will able to say 'his administration was mercifully short, so in absolute terms, the damage was small.'
Building walls in a desertish region needs more than mere orders. It needs a logistical chain to begin with, people who know how to built a wall, a supply of raw material, medical services and so on.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanFer chrissakes, he boasted about sexually assaulting women and getting away with it and the most any of these worthless cowards could bring themselves to do was give him a stern look for the five seconds they thought anyone was watching, before they resumed their adoration of the psychopathic man-child with a ferret glued to his scalp.

I suspect that Trump will only get into trouble with Congress when he goes after them personally. If he tries to order a Congressperosn arrested after they insult him than that would spark Congressional rebellion because he'd be threatening them personally.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think blowing a chunk of their country off the map would be enough to make even the GOP bulk. Even Putin would probably be disgusted and probably try to get Trump's ass out of their ASAP. Hell, even North Korea doesn't nuke their own cities!

@Bat: Implying Putin would stick his neck out for a puppet who has already done his job.
And no, I could easily see them rationalizing rallying behind Trump after such a catastrofuck on the grounds that they're screwed either way if hypothetical Chicago-nuking Trump is removed, so they best support him, since his continued tenure is the only way they avoid the firing line.
The military would probably go ballistic and attempt a coup, and the rest of the world would probably invade too. Like I said, even North- fucking- Korea doesn't nuke their own citizens.

The mitary, sure. I hold them to a much higher standard than the Congressional Republicans have shown themselves to hold themselves to. Any plan or prediction that depends on Congressional Republicans displaying any human decency is inherently doomed because they have none.
And North Korea doesn't do that because they don't have to - their generations of indoctrination have already done wonders to keep the people in line. If there was an opposition or a meaningful revolt, you might see that change.

So the US National Park Service Twitter account has gone rogue.
Well now. That's something.
What's precedent ever done for us?If Trump tried to nuke a US city he'd likely be stopped by either the Secret Service or the military, still the fact that it could easily come to that is bloody terrifying.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranJust woke up. What news came up over the past 10-11 hours?
Man, I love these guys! Keep up the good work, heroes! I'm praying for you.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The journalist arrests turned out to be a false alarm. Seems they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Trump is going ahead with the wall. Trump was also tricked by Fox News into a possible Federal invasion of Chicago if they don't "clean up their act".

What about the arrests of protestors?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Those weren't a false alarm.

And the muslim ban has been pushed through executive order (more accurately, Trump ordered a ban on refugees and other people coming from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen. Not from Saudi Arabia because he has businesses there).

Oh really when?Heh, remember when people gave HRC crap for her considering giving speeches to Saudi Arabia?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThere's a reason the man's image is supposedly used in DAESH recruitment drives. He is the anti-American case in human form.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo... In trope terms, he makes it easy to use him as embodiment of America to serve as a target for Demonization by Daesh?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Also: @Journeyman, you're doing great there. Also, that kind of thing is what I meant when I said attempting to reach the people who're "trapped" in the right-wing media disinformation bubble, and while the discussion on that died after I went to sleep, I want to address the people who noticed that it requires a lot of time and effort: yes, of course it does, what I'm thinking is that if it works, the people you can convince may themselves help convince others in their community.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVI was looking through the list of terror attacks in the US since 9/11 and with the exception of one Somali, the rest were native US citizens, one guy from Kuwait, one Pakistani, and a couple of Russian.
Trump isn't even targeting states that have a history of exporting terrorism to the United States.
I want HRC to troll Trump so bad and the rest of those idiots who voted for him
New Survey coming this weekend!
Well, Bluefish did post @ 169063 that the Democrats have introduced a bill that would restrict the president's use of nuclear weapons: https://lieu.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congressman-lieu-senator-markey-introduce-restricting-first-use-0 . So there's that.
