Ishihara is ruining the only good part about Japan!

In the gerontocratic conformist society that is Japan, there is only one refuge for those who want to be different: otaku culture.

And Tokyo's governor Shintarō Ishihara is ruining it.

How does that make you feel, TV Tropes?

Even his article on The Other Wiki will fill you with a Kigny's rage, however neutral. Ishihara is the David Duke of Japan, except that people take him seriously.

A source that isn't Sankaku would help a lot. Also you may want too look in the anime & manga forum for the "non-existant youth bill" thread where this has been discussed before.

Otakudom is the only good thing about Japan? Not the cars, martial arts, architecture, cuisine, music, nah it's only anime!

I notice a very alarming trend - this decade (and the end of previous one) is filled with politicians trying to restric various media. Japan doest it with Moral Guardians, America with copyright, Australia with Pædo Hunt. I think it's time to protect our freedom of expression

Controlling information has always been a big part of running a government/nation/country

The worst part is that despite his myriad displays of bigotry, he is still the governor of Tokyo!

And he himself writes novels that are a hundred times worse than what he's banning. For one, they are guilty of the exact same elements of what he is banning anime, manga, and video games for. For another, they have actually caused copycat crimes. For a final, you are left to imagine it yourself since there is no visual aid. And if you can, you have a creepy imagination. His novels can be sold to anyone with no restrictions.

I thought this only affected anime/manga and not video games since that what the sources you linked says.

Also as someone in the other thread said: He's still in charge because of the tsunami and that no other "one" has more support.

I thought Australia's crazy internet-censorship bullshit was for Moral Guardianship as well, wasn't it? What an idiotic idea, if not because it's abhorrent, than because it was entirely unworkable...

That's why we need a definite solution for the moral guardian epidemic.

This has had absolutely no effect on any of the publishers or studios in Tokyo. They have continued to make anime and publish manga as if it had never happened, and will keep doing so judging by the fall lineup. The simply don't care about this bill. And it only effects the Tokyo area, except it hasn't even had any effect whatsover.

Annd anime and manga, while awesome, isn't the only good thing about Japan. It's not some weird dysotopia, what are you on?

OP probably criticized Japan's very collectivistic, work-oriented society. He exaggerated extremely although this is one of the bad things about Japan

How did this mockery of humanity get to be governor?

"Altered DNA?" What the heck?

I miss the 90's; the world had decent leaders then. Go further forward or further back and you hit bastards and half-wits on every corner.

So, what I got out of this thread:

1) The OP thinks that all the cultural and technological (etc...) contributions of Japan are meaningless in the face of anime and manga.

2) Some guy wants to apply morale guardianship to anime and manga... which doesn't really bother me since all the anime/manga I care about is already made...

3) The "some guy" in question is a raging hypocrite...

So, my conclusion, then, is that he needs to be voted out. Easy enough, I'd think. Unless this is one of those stupid parliamentary jobs that's assigned for life (*cough* Mike Atkinson *cough*) (even though he resigned, the point still stands). In which case, I laugh at you and your convoluted politics! (because the United States' is so much better a system these days.)

With all the bad things that would guarantee an American politician no second term, he still manages to get reelected! Why? All over the world people lose their political seats just for having a sex life, but a fascist bigot like him stays in office!? Yeah, the title of this thread is hyperbole, but he also plans to move onto Internet censorship.

If he becomes Prime Minister then prepare for a revolution.

Well, his views on nuclear weapons and militarization are very controversial for Japan... although with the current political climate in the US, I'm sure we'd be thrilled if Japan was going to start being it's own man, so to speak, on military matters—it would mean less of the tab goes to us.

Hm. I would call his views on God very Old Testament, not to mention outright strange.

So far, from what I've seen, I somehow doubt he'll be re-elected. Dissing on victims of a recent tragedy is huge no-no in any country. I can only imagine the kind of pike we would have put someone on if they were dissing 9/11 victims after the fact (actually, we'd probably still put them on a pike). As for the bill, whatever the specifics are, it really doesn't seem like anyone in the business takes it seriously and/or cares...

I think it's kind of offensive to suggest that anime and manga are literally the only things Japan has to offer the world.

From the moment the bill was brought up, pretty much every studio and publisher said they were going to ignore it. A grand total of three manga might have been affected, but it could just be coincidence. The bill failed hard and will probably vanish into obscurity, or parody.

And Ishihara's repeat offenses have probably made people pretty fed up with him, it's unlikely he'll be re-elected.

[up]And totally agreed.

Otakudom is the only good thing about Japan?

I think the OP may be confusing "the deepest depths of hell" and "Japan" he even specified "otaku culture"

How did this mockery of humanity get to be governor?

Not many Japanese give a shit about politics and the other ones going for it were even worse IIRC.

Ishihara did actually get re-elected after making the tsunami comments, which once again proves that your average Japanese person couldn't give less of a fuck about politics. Or a scary thought, the other candidates were even worse. I mean this is the guy who said "old women who live after they have lost their reproductive function are useless and are committing a sin," and when said remark caused an outrage responded by saying that the criticism was driven by "tyrant… old women.". But yeah, Ishihara is a dick, no two ways about it. As for the bill, it doesn't seem to have any practical effect, so whatever. Also, would people like the OP please stop the ridiculous implications of Japan being some kind of dystopic hellhole.

Isn't "not giving a damn about politics" pretty universal?

Just look at how many canadians actually voted during their elections.

Not giving a fuck is a sign of a stable government.
